Description of 9 day safari in Kenya

This amazing safari in Kenya invites nine tailor made days of wildlife watching bliss. This is your chance to check into a wilderness camp in Mara Naboisho Conservancy before going walkabout in the African bush en-route to a riverside campsite overlooking Masai Mara National Park.

As a gold-rated eco-camp – one of only three in the whole of Kenya – you can rest assured that every effort has been made to provide as respectful and authentic an experience as possible. Nearly all of the campsite team are from the local Maasai community and by joining a local Maasai guide you’ll be treated to an intimate and sensitive perspective of life in the African bush.

Alongside opportunities to meet local people, on their level, and learn more about responsible tourism projects, you’ll also embark on some of the most exciting game drives on the planet. Lions, leopards, giraffes, elephants, wildebeest and zebras can all be found in Mara Naboisho and Masai Mara National Parks with campsites close to watering holes ensuring front row seats at sunset.

Nocturnal game drives, tales around the campfire, star-gazing and sun downers ensure every day is alive with possibilities. Horse riding, guided walks and yoga options, too, allow life in Kenya to evolve from whole new angles. If you’re looking to tailor a safari in Kenya that blends cultural enlightenment with exciting activities then right here’s where your Africa adventure begins to unfold.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Game drives with numerous encounters with lions, leopards, hyenas, elephant and buffalo. A morning walking safari with Maasai men through an area where we had watched 15 lions hunting the evening before was a particular highlight.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Talk to the local staff to learn about their culture and lives.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I have never felt a holiday I have been on before has benefitted the local people anything like as much as this one. The Mara Naboisho Conservancy is doing amazing things for the local community, giving them a sustainable income and employment, conserving the wildlife and environment and meeting the needs of tourists - an extraordinary balance appears to have been found.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely outstanding.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION

Our 12 camps and lodges are all about caring for our planet in meaningful ways. Our commitment to sustainability is unwavering – our camps run solely on solar power, backed by a generator for cloudy days. Our innovative water heating system, fueled by eco-friendly briquettes crafted from waste, further exemplifies our dedication. Energy-efficient bulbs illuminate our spaces, actively contributing to carbon reduction.

In our endeavor to minimize environmental impact, we cultivate a portion of our vegetables and herbs, while locally-sourced produce supplements our menu. Conscious of the carbon footprint tied to meat production, we provide daily vegetarian and vegan meal options. This approach aligns with our goal of reducing the ecological strain while catering to diverse dietary preferences.

Throughout our journeys, we champion shared experiences to curtail CO2 emissions per person. Our walking safaris invite guests to immerse themselves in the ecosystem and wildlife. By choosing this mode of exploration, patrons directly contribute to the preservation of natural habitats. This vital step curbs deforestation and land degradation, preventing the release of stored carbon into the atmosphere. A thriving ecosystem serves as a formidable carbon sink, actively absorbing excess carbon dioxide.

Our commitment extends to encouraging guests to leave a lasting impact through tree planting on our dedicated plantation. Additionally, your support aids our Foundation's wildlife conservation projects. Through our seedballs eco-project, guests can actively participate in the restoration of degraded areas by simply tossing seedballs into the soil. Encased in a fertile charcoal crust, these seeds sprout into indigenous trees and shrubs, breathing life into the land once more.

ENVIRONMENT WILDLIFE

Every accommodation we partner with undergoes rigorous scrutiny of its environmental practices. Pollution reduction, water conservation, renewable energy adoption, plastic reduction, and waste management are central to our criteria. Our innovative composting toilets transform wastewater into nourishment for our tree plantation, while biodegradable waste is converted into compost for our gardens. Plastic waste is diligently collected and responsibly recycled.

Participation in our safaris includes entry fees to wildlife reserves and conservancies, directly funding their conservation and protection. As advocates for nature recovery, our initiatives funnel funds into rewilding and ecosystem restoration projects. The Enjolaata Center functions as an educational hub, fostering awareness and responsible nature exploration.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Our connection with the local Maasai and Samburu communities is deeply rooted, setting us apart from other tourism operators in Masai Mara. Our collaborative efforts culminated in the creation of Naboisho Conservancy in 2010– a testament to the Maasai's unity against land depletion. By establishing a community-owned nature conservancy, we provided the Maasai with an alternative to selling their land to outsiders and helped protect vital wildlife territory. The local community receives income from tourism activities in the Mara Talek and Mara Naboisho Conservancies.

Promoting economic fairness, we empower local women's groups, showcasing their exquisite beaded and leather merchandise in our gift shops. Each purchase carries a personal touch, connecting buyers with the artisans behind the creations.

We go beyond safaris, offering a heartfelt connection to the community. Our safaris invite guests to immerse in culture and community warmth. It's not just about wildlife; it's about people, traditions, and shared love for the environment. Experience cultural immersion by engaging in authentic village life. 'Meet the Neighbours' lets you delve into Samburu traditions and environmental dedication, fostering delightful exchanges. Nearby, another camp unveils the 'Singing Wells' tradition, where pastoralists serenade water sources vital to their animals. In the Masai Mara, Thursdays reveal the Maasai's adaptability through a vibrant market, transcending goods to embrace trade and tradition. Participating in these cultural experiences boosts the local economy, as entry fees directly benefit communities. It's not just observation; it's contributing to those who open their hearts and homes to share their stories

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Our commitment to community shines through our team, as 85% to 90% of our staff are from the Maasai and Samburu communities. We provide and sponsor training and growth opportunities, ensuring that our positive influence directly benefits those who call this land home. We champion diversity by providing opportunities to marginalized groups, including individuals with disabilities, indigenous people, and women.

We also promote empowerment and awareness through scholarships in local schools and the Wildlife Training College (the only guiding school in Mara).

Guests are able to choose to support one of our Foundation’s wildlife conservation projects or sponsor students in the guiding school through bursaries. Leave a positive footprint and reduce their carbon footprint by planting a tree in our tree plantation.
