Albania food and wine holiday
Description of Albania food and wine holiday
Enjoy a lesser-known take on the Mediterranean diet on this Albania food and wine holiday. Albania is the home of wineries, raki makers, and plenty of followers of the Slow Food movement, who are devoted to farm-to-table cooking.
You’ll spend lunches and evenings sampling traditional dishes cooked and served in homely terracotta dishes. To work up your appetite, there’s also wine tasting, learning how to make raki, and a tour of the country’s oldest brewery.
The cities of Tirana, Shkodra and Lezha make interesting stops on your trip, and there’s time for sightseeing in their centres. You’ll find yourself following in the footsteps of Albania’s national hero, Skanderbeg – his square is right at the centre of Tirana, whilst his memorial and castle are in Lezha. In Shkodra, considered the capital of northern Albania, you can explore the castle and mosque.
Nature is never far away. On this trip you’ll drive along part of the Albanian Riviera, its rugged coastline looking out on the Adriatic and Ionian seas. You’ll be able to visit the blue eye karst spring, one of Albania’s most famous sites. It’s a beautiful natural spring that you can visit on the way to the historic town of Gjirokastra. There’s no swimming here – but you can cool off at Prekal, where there’s a river that winds through a beautiful canyon.
All along this trip’s route, you’ll be supporting local people by staying in family-run farms and hotels, and eating at local restaurants. There’s plenty of chances to buy home-made souvenirs – mountain tea, olive oil, and jams made from wild-growing fruits – all of which help you support local businesses, too.
You’ll come home from this trip laden with supplies, recipes and culinary inspiration.

This tour by definition is environmentally friendly. All the itinerary is based on stops to bio and agrotourism sites, that have as primary goal the preservation of the nature and landscape of the area around them. All this tour is based on supplies produced locally, so no need of transport for food and drinks.Everything supplied to the guests is produced in the site and with no use of chemicals and pesticides.
All the sites chosen by us are members of the Slow Food Initiative - they all try to cook dishes in old/traditional way and to preserve tastes that are in the way of distinguish in the day to day life.
These centers also are struggling to be self efficient with energy by adopting solar, wind or water electrical power producing tools. Albania has around 300 sunny days per year - perpetual wind in some of the hills and mountain passes where remote guesthouses are located and many small highland water sources where small turbines can be installed.
People
This tour is about regional gastronomy and wine, but is not strictly limited to this. All products that are offered during the meals, can also be bought in bigger quantities such as; cheese, honey, different jams mainly from wild fruits, mountain tea, olive oil and even the local drink raki. The purchase of these home made products adds value to these small economies. We support these local economies by providing labels and graphic design help to boost their marketing in the off-season.The local creatives are also able to create a portfolio of handmade textiles from natural material like wool or plants. Some of them are advancing into more complicated products like blouses, shawls, caps, socs, guants, with traditional or modern designs. Small carpets are the most requested.
We are promoting all these products at the beginning of the tours and the majority of the guests agree that buying would be another support for the communities.
