1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The mountain scenery. The castles and the Roman remains.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Check the accomodation before you go. We had 3 night stay on the coast and had
to endure 3 nights of very loud music which started at 8pm and finished at
midnight.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Not particularly.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We had a few disappointments as regards accommodation and one trip had not been booked for us. We have used Responsible Travel several times in the past but we didn't feel that this trip fitted the criteria.

Read the operator's response here:

Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry that this tour did not always meet your expectations. The tour was tailormade and led by a local Albanian guide with visits to local providers. In high season on the Albanian Riviera it is common for hotels to put on entertainment. This was a small hotel in a quiet area, however we understand that the live band playing until midnight was upsetting.
We are sorry you did not think that the tour benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation. All our local staff including your guide are locally based and employed full time, which is only possible with the support of visitors such as yourself. We include visits to local family run restaurants and businesses such as in Fishte and Dukat in addition the visit to Llogara National Park supports the conservation work in that area.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Sustainability is of paramount importance to us. Environmental friendliness and deep respect for the local culture are our main values, and we welcome everyone with wide, open arms to feel it.

We recognise that climate change is one of the most urgent problems facing our world today and the tourism sector is a growing contributor to the problem. Travel and tourism are responsible for around 5% of global CO2 emissions. Our challenge is to prepare for a low-carbon society by further reducing our environmental impacts, while ensuring we preserve tourism’s social and economic benefits – both for the host community and for our customers

Working with all relevant local bodies and authorities, we aim to help preserve or improve the environment and deliver a long-term benefit for the host community. All our suppliers should have or be developing green practices. Our local team in Tirana has developed a comprehensive sustainability policy, with specific targets on carbon emissions and waste reduction. They are also sharing this amongst their suppliers to assist with the development of sustainable procedures throughout the supply chain.

Reduction of the use of single use plastic water bottles is actively encouraged, especially when on hiking trails and if taking any cycling trips. We encourage all our customers not to use single use plastic bags and bring along their own shopping bags or ‘bags for life’.

There are responsibilities at home. Running our office in a responsible manner and monitoring and reducing our energy usage as well as recycling is part of the culture we are developing.

We recognise the need to fly to a destination but thereafter we will encourage travelling overland rather than using internal flights, to minimise carbon emissions. We are also able to plan rail travel in Europe to help travellers reach Albania without flying.

People

Wherever possible we use local businesses to provide activities, ensuring money is put directly back into the communities we visit. Our strategy is to develop long term relationships with our local suppliers to ensure that the economic benefit is ongoing and continuous. There must also be a visible benefit to the local communities. On this tour of Albania, we are using a number of different local businesses, supporting craftsmen and artists.

The tour visits Kronos Agrotourism, a local farming cooperative and we also support a local fig growing farm with a visit to learn about their crops. We aim to ensure that local suppliers and operators receive a fair rate for their services and support and encourage fair employment practices.

We actively discourage the exploitation of local people and will only engage with suppliers that demonstrate a duty of care towards the people they employ.

We actively encourages tour leaders and guides to disclose any concerns they may have to us. All suppliers must respect elementary human rights such as non-discrimination, freedom of assembly, no forced labour and no child labour.

It is explicitly forbidden for any participation in or endorsement of commercial sexual activities, exploitative sexual activities or drug use on our trips, from staff or customers.
