Description of Amalfi Coast hike, boat & kayak holiday

This multi-activity trip around the magnificent Amalfi Coast immerses you in one of the most picturesque regions of Italy, with glorious Mediterranean scenery to bask in throughout. You’ll start in the historic port city of Naples, famed not just for its pizza and ice cream, but its decadent pastries.

A short hop by private minibus takes you to Pompeii, perhaps the best-known archaeological site in the world. The chariot-marked streets, homes and public buildings have been astonishingly well-preserved in the sulphurous ash that covered them when nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. You’ll learn more about that event as later on you hike around the smoking rim of the volcano itself - an incredible experience.

Free time is set aside for you to make the most of hiking trails around the pretty town of Agerola, perhaps as a gentle warm-up for the ‘Pathway of the Gods’ - this is one of the most revered walking routes in all Italy, taking you through scenes of rural tranquility, vineyards, pastures full of goats and a deep limestone gorge on the way to Positano.

There will be more hiking on the beautiful Isle of Capri, where Roman emperors had their holiday homes and the waters are crystal-clear, and between Amalfi and Ravello, long a favoured haunt of writers, musicians and artists.

Although none of these hikes are especially strenuous, an afternoon is set aside to give your feet a rest and give your upper body something to do, as you kayak off the coast of Amalfi.

Picture yourself sipping limoncello in the shade of fragrant pine trees, admiring cliff top views of the Med, and escaping the crowds through pastoral walks for days on end - this is the finest way to see the Amalfi coast.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most memorable parts of the vacation were the beautiful vistas from Mt. Vesuvius, to Aregola, to Alamfi and Ravella. I couldn't believe how far our group
trekked, walked and stepped across the Amalfi Coast. Overall we had a good group of like minded travelers who had a good sense of humor around all the
steps!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I would make it clear in the itinerary that the trip is mostly hiking/walking and there is only one afternoon of kayaking. From the name of the trip, I thought the activities would vary more. If you enjoy hiking but are not an avid hiker, this activity will be harder for you especially in hotter weather. It's a good tip to check the demographics of the trip to make sure you fit into the group. Also note, that there is very little free time because of the tight schedule.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Try to travel in 1-2 days before the trip starts to let the jet lag settle. If I didn't take 2 days to acclimate to the time difference and then tried to hike in 85F/29C degrees, I wouldn't have been able to enjoy the first days' hiking activity.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, by staying in local/family run hotels and easting in local restaurants. Since we mostly walked, there was minimal time spent in a van/ferry to get around.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Overall, I had a good time and would recommend the tour to a friend (or similar age/health). I would have given the trip 5 stars if if there was more diversity
in activities and a real day of rest between intense physical days. A few activities that could have broken up some of the physicals activities: 1) visit to a local
farm/winery tour 2) regional cooking class and wine tasting 3) visit to a pottery factory, where you can see learn about the history of pottery to this region in
Italy. A big plush to the trip was staying in the Floridian Hotel in Amalfi and having access to the Jacuzzi on the roof. After a long day of hiking, that was the
perfect way to stay cool and ease my sore muscles.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

When travelling along Italy’s Amalfi Coast we use public transport wherever possible as this is the most environmentally-friendly way of travelling. On our Hike, Boat & Kayak trip we use private transport when public transport isn’t feasible, but this will always be hired locally.

All our leaders are passionate about responsible travel, so our messaging around the importance of environmental issues is always consistent. Our leaders make the effort to teach our passengers about recycling opportunities, and Italy has good recycling schemes in place. We hope some of our travellers will take these ideas home with them to help improve the environment where they live.

We advise our travellers on the water shortage problems in this part of Italy and ask them to keep their showers short to minimize wastage. On our hikes through the beautiful Italian scenery, we also actively encourage the philosophy that you should take out any rubbish you may have brought in.

People

Our multi-active trips in Italy are run by an operator that is fully owned and operated by locals. These operators also employ local leaders who are native to the regions we travel to. Each year we provide operator and leader training on various subjects, including responsible travel. Before signing any contracts, we always ensure that suppliers share our philosophy and stance on environmental issues.

We make sure our small groups take nothing but memories (and photos!) and leave nothing but footprints. This small group tour has a maximum of 12 participants, meaning that we have a low impact on the communities we visit and are able to ensure that we don’t disrupt or contribute to the displacement of local people.

Many of the areas near Naples and around the Amalfi Coast experience high volumes of day-trip tourists, with visitors mainly staying on cruise ships. A style of tourism that doesn’t benefit the local communities. This itinerary takes the road less travelled and focuses on exploration of more rural areas like Agerola, a place not even on the radar of most day-trippers. Visiting these sorts of areas means our presence can directly profit the local economy.
The activities on this trip like kayaking are led by local experts. Taking part in these sorts of outdoor adventures not only benefits the local people financially, but also helps to sparks a mutual understanding between our travellers and the communities of this region.
