Description of Austria hiking and yoga holiday
This yoga and hiking holiday is hosted at MoaAlm Mountain Retreat, a beautifully designed mountain house, located high in the Austrian Alps.
MoaAlm Mountain Retreat is situated at 1800m and surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery. It is a unique place to explore the area around Austria's highest peak far away from all the hustle and bustle and to find peace and quiet.
Start your day with a yoga class in the panorama studio, followed by a healthy breakfast and a guided hike in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Your hosts Sophie and Tobias will show you East Tyrol from its most beautiful side and, together with their team, ensure that everyone feels at home. In the afternoon, the wood-fired hot tub is ready for a muscle soak with the best view of the Alps. At the long dining table, delicious, 3-course vegan meals are served alongside Austrian wine and beer.
YOGA & HIKING:
MoaAlm Mountain Retreat offers sustainable hiking and yoga holidays for a maximum of 14 people all year round. In summer, the holidays include five guided hikes within the surrounding Alpine area. The outdoor activities are combined with daily yoga classes in the in-house panoramic studio. When the weather allows, we take our yoga practice outside to take advantage of the fresh mountain air.
FOOD:
At MoaAlm, the emphasis is on mountain adventure, sustainability and a healthy lifestyle. All meals are plant based and freshly prepared from organic and regional ingredients. The chefs create excellent, seasonal three course menus and are happy to cater for special diets. After an active day in the outdoors you can warm up with a cup of tea and enjoy some homemade vegan cake. The nutritious breakfast includes all vegan alternatives as well as locally sourced eggs, milk and cheese.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES:
If you would like an adrenaline rush, we can also arrange additional activities with our local partners, such as rafting, canyoning, paragliding and rock climbing. We also have the option to include some biking within the holiday.
THE AREA:
MoaAlm is situated in idyllic seclusion about 3km above the small village of Kals am Großglockner. The Hohe Tauern National Park with its countless hiking trails, diverse flora and fauna, mountain lakes, glaciers and Austria's highest peaks is just a few minutes' walk away. Kals is still a traditional Alpine village, where many of the residents graze animals on the high alpine pastures. Kals is also home to a small ski resort and a few lovely traditional restaurants.
ACCOMMODATION:
The former guesthouse was converted into a stylish mountain retreat in 2014. All six rooms have an ensuite bathroom and can be furnished with a double bed or two single beds. Solo travelers or families also have the option of sharing a spacious triple room. The fully equipped yoga studio, the sunny terrace with a magnificent view, the cozy living area, sofa corners, a small bar and the long dining table invite you to relax or socialize at any time.
In 2018, MoaAlm Mountain Retreat was named one of the best retreats in the world by The Guardian newspaper. In 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 it was named “Best of the Best” worldwide by TripAdvisor. Since 2024 MoaAlm is an “Official partner of the Hohe Tauern National Park”.

MoaAlm Mountain Retreat is a space to share our passion for the mountains and a balanced and healthy lifestyle. The East Tyrolian Alps offer unspoilt landscapes and habitat for a variety of plants and animals. We are located on the edge of the Hohe Tauern National Park and part of a small village community, Kals am Großglockner. Every day, life at MoaAlm reminds us of the preciousness of our environment which it is our goal to protect. We serve plant based, locally sourced organic food, and change our menu with the seasons to ensure we are creating as minimul impact on the environment as possible.
Saving CO2 emissions, energy and waste is an important goal. We encourage everybody to be conscious about how to use the lighting and heating in the house. We use LED light bulbs, water-saving shower heads and environmentally friendly cleaning products. Towels and bed linen are only changed on request. We try to avoid waste by ordering things in a well-planned way with little packaging. What still has to go is separated, composted or recycled if possible.
Our water is supplied directly from a mountain spring and our heating system is a brand new 'eco' pellet burning system. The P4 pellet system has won many international quality awards in EU and USA, the most prestigious of all are the Blue Angel and the Austrian Ecolabel. Even in winter our South facing position can also provide supplementary energy from our solar bank.
Natural materials have been used in the construction and renovation of MoaAlm where possible and we have been pleased to find a number of high quality, locally produced materials to use in the refurbishment. The local tradesmen we employ are highly skilled, particularly in mediums of wood, stone and locally-produced felt.
People
MoaAlm stands proud at 1800 meters and without a neighbor in sight. We love our secluded location, but we also love the village! The connection to the people in our region means a lot to us and we prefer to use local structures, services and products. The area has an excellent ski school and advanced mountain guiding network of instructors that guests may choose to take advantage of. All fresh food and drink will be sourced locally where possible. Guests will eat out for lunch on occasion and two evenings at locally-run recommended restaurants. Our small team lives and works at MoaAlm: We want them to be happy and stay long-term, of course. Good and fair working conditions and enough freedom to enjoy the mountains go without saying.
