Description of Belize holiday, discover Belize

From rainforest hikes and tropical wildlife to paradise islands and ancient jungle ruins – embark on a Belize adventure.

Belize is a paradise for bird watching, and there will be many opportunities for wildlife watching during this trip. Hear the dawn chorus during a sunrise walk around the Crooked Tree Lagoon, listen out for howler monkeys at the Community Baboon Sanctuary, and catch the blue flash of a kingfisher fishing in the lagoon. Spend a few hours in the world's first and only jaguar reserve, where we’ll try to spot this elusive predator, as well as wild pigs, deer and tapirs. We will visit manatees in their mangrove habitats and go snorkelling among corals with a catamaran tour around the idyllic islands of the Belize Barrier Reef.

The highlight of this trip is discovering the lost Maya civilisations of Belize. With the help of an experienced guide, we’ll visit the ruins of Altun Ha, see the huge pyramid at Xunantunich and cross the border into Guatemala to explore the Maya metropolis of Tikal. We’ll also sail up crocodile-inhabited rivers, through jungles filled with the twitter of birds, to get to the ancient Maya ruins of Lamanai.

Accommodation will be a mix of comfortable hotels and lodges, including an overnight stay in the former capital, Belize City, and two nights at the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, where we’ll stay in a lodge on the edge of the lagoon.

Holiday information

Small group tour, ideal for solos & couples:
Small group travel is not large group travel scaled down. It is modelled on independent travel – but with the advantage of a group leader to take care of the itinerary, accommodation and tickets, and dealing with the language. It’s easy to tick off the big sights independently – but finding those one-off experiences, local festivals, travelling markets and secret viewpoints is almost impossible for someone without the insider knowledge gained from years in the field. Those with a two-week holiday, a small group tour will save valuable planning time.
Diet:
We can cater for vegetarians on this holiday. Sadly we cannot offer vegan food.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

All hotels and transport are locally owned. We support the Mayan community at the Cockscomb sanctuary: a small community of Mayan ladies survive on the production of their traditional crafts. We also donate to and visit the Baboon Sanctuary an area designated for the protection of the howler monkeys. Where we use local providers for excursions such as lamanai and the snorkelling trips our local crew are trained in and brief on responsible tourism and the protection of the flora and fauna (coral reefs) in the area.

In addition to the above, we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage. As well as this, we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of UK travel industry bodies Tourism Concern and AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.

As a company we support Cool Earth. Protecting rainforest is one of the most effective actions to tackle climate breakdown. CoolEarth work with indigenous communities empowering them to conserve their forest; keeping CO2 locked in.

People

Belize is still largely untouristy on the mainland, and many of the communities survive off the tourism economy and are engaged with protecting their local environment, whether it be jungle, wetland or reef. At the Crooked Tree Wildlife Reserve you will visit the Belize Audobon Society's ranger station, which does a lot of work into educating the young people in the area in wildlife protection.
