Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
CARBON REDUCTIONThe daily activities on this tour include hiking, rafting, and kayaking, so the majority of our movements around the area are powered solely by human engines. There are going to be occasional short car or bus rides to arrive to and from the accommodation, but we designed this itinerary as an experience that keeps driving time to a minimum and therefore reduces the amount of fuel needed to get between destinations. We will travel through regions that are wild and untouched, where the food is sourced and produced locally. By selecting local products, we reduce emissions from large-scale commercial agriculture and reduce the distance food must travel from field to plate. While traditional Bosnian and Montenegrin food tends to be quite meat-heavy, vegetarian and vegan meal options are offered every day. Were also determined to minimize the negative environmental impacts of this tour by decreasing the amount of flying, and no internal flights are part of the trip. To cut down on emissions, we advise those flying into Croatia to think about taking direct flights if available. As we encourage using local transportation like buses or ride-sharing services, we also provide travelers with information about transport arrangements ahead of their trip. We use a range of accommodations to meet our needs on this trip, but whenever possible, we partner with facilities that make efforts to limit their carbon footprints by reducing plastic and food waste and encouraging guests to reduce water and energy usage.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
We will spend almost all of our time on this tour visiting and exploring protected areas. By paying entry fees to the national parks, we are supporting conservation efforts and contributing to the preservation of those protected natural regions. Also, by joining us on this trip, travelers will directly contribute to the conservation of the Komarnica River because 10% of the profits of each tour go towards preventing dam construction on this beautiful river. Our guides are locals to the Balkan region and have backgrounds in Environmental Sciences, Medicine, Biology, Tourism, and more. As a result, were able to provide expert nature guidance wherever we are. We adhere to the principles of leave no trace while on the trip, teaching and counseling our clients on how to minimize their environmental impact while also leading by example.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYWe book small group stays at mostly locally run establishments in Bosnia and Montenegro in order to support the local economy and encourage responsible travel, not supporting international chains. We opt for smaller boutique hotels that make an effort to employ local people and keep tourism dollars within the communities. The meals served on this tour are provided by family-run and locally-owned restaurants, and they are prepared using fresh local products to promote and support regional agriculture. We will visit Bosnian and Montenegrin mountain villages and small towns, so we will use every chance we get to support the local community, from visiting local shops and buying homemade products to using local transport.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
We believe in equal opportunity employment and reject any form of discrimination based on race, gender, nationality or sexual orientation. We make an effort to employ staff from the local community, and all guides on this tour are locals - either from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina or Montenegro. In this way, we support local community values and seek to share them with our clients through authentic travel experiences. A standout feature of our team is the significant representation of women, who make up more than three-quarters of our permanent staff. Additionally, our tours are designed to create an inclusive environment for the LGBTQ+ community and welcome travelers from diverse backgrounds. We celebrate diversity in the office and on our tours, and our goal is to create spaces where everyone feels respected and valued.
