Description of Cambodia and Vietnam holiday
This all-encompassing 18-day tour offers an excellent introduction to Southeast Asia as you travel from Vietnam to Thailand by way of the ruined temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Travelling by private minibus, sleeper trains, tuk tuks, boats and even on the back of a motorbike really allows for an authentic and exciting trip.
Kicking things off with a night in the Vietnamese capital lets you find your feet and meet the rest of your group and tour leader. We recommend arriving early if you want to make the most of Hanoi's highlights as the next morning you'll be heading east to the limestone monoliths of Halong Bay.
On an overnight train journey south from Hanoi, you get to ride side by side with local people and watch landscapes morph en route to the cities of Hue and Hoi An. A boat cruise on the Perfume River in Hue and optional cooking classes in Hoi An help this section of the holiday unveil the country's regional cultural heritage, prior to flying south to Ho Chi Minh City.
HCM is an incredible city, packed full of monuments and museums. Ho Chi Minh also allows easy access to the waterways and working river banks situated along the Mekong Delta, where you can take a boat trip to coconut gardens and tour villages by tuk tuk, before the next day's lengthy journey across the border to Phnom Penh in Cambodia. The streets and memorials of Phnom Penh provide opportunities to learn about Cambodia's history, with a guided tour of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields that are situated just outside the city.
With more museums, temples and spectacular architecture to come in Battambang and Siem Reap, including the creeper-draped temples of Angkor Wat, your time spent in Cambodia will no doubt leave a lasting impression. And after wishing a fond farewell, you'll be ready for the long drive west for two nights in Bangkok, Thailand's capital city.

The very ethos of our style of travel is responsible; small groups on fully escorted tours, experiencing the very best of a region, a culture and a landscape, with a friendly local hand guiding the way. Our itineraries are designed to give our travellers real life experiences without compromising the part of the world through which we are journeying, this is our commitment as a global tour operator. As a company, our responsibilities don’t stop when our tours end. We run and support a variety of projects globally, from healthcare, education, human rights, child welfare, sustainable development and environmental and wildlife protection. Our own in house foundation has been in operation for over 11 years; a not-for-profit fund that has distributed over AU$3 million to more than 70 non-government organisations since 2002. Donations come from our travellers and are then matched by us dollar for dollar.

Traversing three countries and many different communities, it is important for travellers to learn as much as possible in advance about the many cultural differences so that we can travel respecting these differences and minimising any negative impacts. Your group leader and the local guides we use along the way will help to break down barriers in your interactions with local people. The ruins of Angkor are protected under UNESCO World Heritage listing and as such, part of the money received from entrance tickets contributes to the amazing site’s conservation. Your local guide will also give you plenty of guidance on what is appropriate when visiting the ruins and you will have the chance to interact with many of the local kids.
This trip includes visits to Friends in Phnom Penh and KOTO in Hanoi – restaurants with training schools set up for less fortunate kids, helping them to gain some practical skills.
Travellers will have the option of visiting the land mine museum in Siem Reap and any donations are gratefully accepted. Also in Siem Reap, there is a local children’s hospital where the local kids put on a show on some nights. All money and blood donations are for the hospital and provide free services for children from the area. At the end of our journey, travellers may donate any unwanted clothing, medicines and bandages, which are distributed to appropriate local charities.
