Description of Canary Islands walking holiday

Enjoy this eight day walking holiday on two Canary Islands: Tenerife and La Gomera. With their dramatic mountains and great year-round climate, these two Canary Islands offer fantastic hiking. Across both islands there’s wonderful scenery, from laurel forests to hillside villages and black sand beaches. A hike around Tenerife’s large central volcano – and Spain’s highest peak – Mount Teide, brings the trip to a dramatic finale.

From Tenerife you’ll start this tour by taking a ferry over to La Gomera. On this quiet island you can visit the attractive colonial town of Agulo, enjoy pretty coastal walks, and visit Garajonay National Park to climb the highest peak on the island. Crossing back to Tenerife you’ll ascend to El Teide Plateau for a walk to the less-visited Roques de Capricho, before ending the adventure in San Miguel de Abona.

This trip lasts eight days, featuring half-day hikes. These moderate hikes are on well-defined trails and paved paths. You'll be in a group of no more than 16 participants. Breakfasts are included, and there are plenty of opportunities to dine on local cuisine and enjoy the local wine.

Holiday information

Small group tour, ideal for solos & couples:
Small group travel is not large group travel scaled down. It is modelled on independent travel – but with the advantage of a group leader to take care of the itinerary, accommodation and tickets, and dealing with the language. It’s easy to tick off the big sights independently – but finding those one-off experiences, local festivals, travelling markets and secret viewpoints is almost impossible for someone without the insider knowledge gained from years in the field. Those with a two-week holiday, a small group tour will save valuable planning time.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet and people

On this tour we visit two of the Canary Islands so we can spread our business over two islands instead of just one. We stay in small locally run hotels / posadas in the smaller villages rather than in the bigger coastal resorts. We walk wherever possible and use small local taxi operators rather than charter buses where possible, and the locally owned ferry instead of the foreign owned Fred Olsen ferry. We eat in small restaurants en route whilst walking. All tap water in the Canary Islands is readily drinkable, so we urge you to take and use a water bottle rather than buying water to reduce pressure on the small islands’ limited resources for dealing with plastic waste.

In addition to the above, we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage. As well as this, we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of UK travel industry bodies Tourism Concern and AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.

As a company we support Cool Earth. Protecting rainforest is one of the most effective actions to tackle climate breakdown. CoolEarth work with indigenous communities empowering them to conserve their forest; keeping CO2 locked in.
