Description of Denali National Park holiday in Alaska

Holidays in Alaska are the stuff of trekking dreams with the wide open spaces and stunning glaciers of Denali National Park providing the backdrop to an incredibly exciting 12 day holiday spent hiking and camping away from the standard tourist trail.

An Alaska holiday also puts you in the realm of North America’s largest national park, Wrangell St. Elias, where hikes over glaciers and ice climbing combine with overnight wilderness camps and canoe trips along the Maclaren River.

No Alaska and Denali holiday is complete without wildlife watching with bears, moose and wolves, oh my, all to be found as well as caribou aligning the fast-flowing melt water river banks. Tour leaders ensure you never miss a movement with stories around the campfire and shared animal encounters adding to the allure of nights under Alaskan skies and clear and fresh mountain air.

Accessibility

Accessible Overview:
We are a small family run business and catering to different needs and expectations is what we do for everyone.
Limited Mobility:
Our trips are outdoor-orientated camping trips and many of our days are very active. We include hiking, canoeing and kayaking. However we have had clients on our trips that are only able to walk a limited amount and have left out canoeing or kayaking. As long as you are flexible, we are, too!
Limited Vision:
You should be comfortable in finding your own way around places you have never been to. We had clients with limited vision in the past – the best is to contact us directly and we will see what we can do.
Limited Hearing:
We write down our daily agenda for every day and we are happy to talk to our clients one to one if this helps with understanding our day plans.
'Free from' food:
We cater easily to vegetarians, vegans, lactose-free or gluten-free dietary requirements - breakfast, lunch and dinner. Please let us know beforehand and we will talk with you about what kind of food you are able to eat. Due to Alaska’s remoteness please be aware that many of the stores will not carry certain products, but with a little bit of planning ahead we can usually manage.
LGBT:
We run international tours, love to meet people from around the world and work together in a fun, open-minded group environment.

Our guide, Dave, had a lot of great information to help us along the way. I loved the bush camp off the Maclaren glacial river. We were far away from everyone in the majestic wilderness of Alaska and saw a brilliant northern lights display. It was magical! The animals sightings were spectacular! Read full review

The best part for me was that we saw that many animals. Animals everywhere on the road, campground and on the day trips. It was really good that Dave always took good pictures which we got at the end. And I also really liked the campfires in the evening where we were talking with each other and ate a lot marshmallows :) Read full review

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Alaska is one of the last places in this world with pristine and untouched wilderness. It goes without saying that we recycle to local possibilities and leave our campsites exactly as we found them. Being out in the wilderness also means teaching our guests how to interact with wildife safely. We make sure to not put wild animals in any danger through frequent interaction with humans. For bears this means for example to never leave any food or trash open or unlocked in our camps to make sure these beautiful wild animals don't get used to different food sources other than what mother nature provides them.

Our Overland Vehicle is running carbon neutral. As much as we believe that the only right way is to save ressources and find ways to reduce CO2 emmissions we also think running our vehicle carbon neutral is at least a start: It is a necessary second-best solution for us as a small company. We decided to go with atmosfair, which is a climate protection organisation with a focus on travel. They actively protect the climate by compensating greenhouse gases through the use of renewable energies, among other activities. This means we are calculating the fuel consumption for a whole year. 3 liters of fuel equals 3 kg of CO2. For the amount of CO2 emissions we will pay atmosfair to compensate and reinvest in green energy projects.

People

We believe that traveling broadens your mind. Group travel allows you not only to encounter the culture of the places you are visiting it also allows you to interact with people from different countries learning about their living experiences. Being out in the nature and sleeping under the stars brings you freedom and may give you different perspectives and views on you life back home.

Being a small family run business, we pride ourselves on developing relationships with the locals, most notably the local suppliers. When we provide accommodations, or even when we go ice climbing, we do everything we can to work with small local businesses. Going shopping, we look for local farmers’ markets to purchase local produce.
If we are providing accommodations, we work with people like Susie and Allen from Maclaren River Lodge who have been running a local business for over 20 years. The activities we provide through third party suppliers are with locals like glacier hikes with a small family run company like Elias Guides.
Whenever possible we include local festivals/concerts of Alaskan bands into our itinerary.
