Description of Divemaster and instructor courses in the Caribbean

This two month Divemaster & Instructor course is open to anyone who wants to conserve the coral reefs and marine ecology of the Caribbean as well as unlocking access to marine volunteer projects and careers in diving and conservation – ideal for those with a degree in marine science.

Our emphasis is on producing environmentally aware and responsible PADI dive professionals through the expert tuition of qualified dive pros and marine scientists who are eagerly waiting to share their knowledge, skills and passion for the underwater world of the Caribbean.

This Divemaster & Instructor course is set on and around the incredible Caribbean island of Carriacou which lies close to Grenada within the West Indies archipelago. The eight week programme is suitable for travellers who are new to diving and for anyone with previous dive experience and qualifications looking to deepen their passion as they take things to a professional level.

You’ll be invited to complete PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water courses alongside becoming part of a conservation and research team, actively monitoring the marine ecology and collecting data to help with on-going studies. The more you learn the more you’ll be able to commit to more advanced conservation and monitoring projects as well as further increasing your time underwater.

For the final month of this two month course you’ll be training to be a professional diver. This will involve helping other volunteers as well as undertaking an Emergency First Response course, a PADI Rescue course and Divemaster courses. After the eight week Divemaster & Instructor courses have been completed you’ll be a fully qualified and pro-rated diver. This achievement will allow you to apply for jobs and work within the industry including projects related to the protection of marine ecology and the conservation of coral reefs in the Caribbean, and beyond.

One month Marine AWARE Instructor Development Course (IDC):

For this section of the course you’ll receive personalised PADI instructor training so as to give you the tools required to enter the world of professional diving where your newly acquired skills and knowledge will act as a platform to inspire others to continue to protect the world’s oceans. After the course you will not be viewed as ‘just another dive instructor’, although you will have covered the standard IDC PADI syllabus, but you’ll be trained as a marine conservation ambassador so you can pass on your knowledge and skills and teach others to continue the good work.

Two week Instructor Development Course:

This intensive course is hard work but you’ll also find plenty of time for snorkelling around nearby Sandy Island as well as recreational dives to help you witness the incredible biodiversity of the Caribbean’s coral reefs, first-hand. Beach barbecues and bevies at sundown are also part and parcel of two weeks of IDC training and you’ll be staying at a local family-run hotel where Mischa and her team will welcome you to the Caribbean, just a few yards from the beach and dive centre.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

We are a marine conservation NGO dedicated to working with key stakeholders to help preserve and protect the fragile coral reef ecosystem around the beautiful island of Carriacou. Current project work includes:

Reef monitoring to facilitate informed decision making concerning the governance and regulation of fishing practices on the island.

Lionfish containment, in conjunction with GEF, the selection, training and subsequent payment of locally sourced men and women to form a Lionfish hunting team. With the aim of limiting the impact of this invasive species, the team conduct regular cull dives as well as organising community events aimed at increasing the awareness of the threat and to promote the consumption of the fish as a primary protein source.

Coral nursery, in conjunction with UNEP, the selection and training of locally sourced coral gardeners, the construction and population of a Elkhorn coral nursery, including regular cleaning and measurements. As of now, coral fragments are undergoing out planting and thus helping to restore the natural reef barrier in an effort to combat the ongoing threat of coastal erosion.

As part of wider environmental concerns, the team, community members and volunteers conduct regular beach clean ups to help alleviate the impact of of waste products and debris and it's contribution to marine and coral reef pollution.

Whilst water is piped, CRB and the associated dive centre utilise large water bowsers to collect rain water which is used as the 'source of choice' for the majority of the year.

People

All of our past, present and future project work will have an important community aspect. This ranges from training and employment through to community liaison and workshops. To date, we have selected and trained 19 locally sourced divers who are actively involved in our project work.

As a team, we are always on the lookout for 'shining stars', one such individual was identified in 2022 and has completed her professional Dive training with us, as such she will play a full and active role with the volunteers visiting in 2023 and beyond.

As part of our Lionfish programme, we identified a need to involve as many community members as possible. One target group was local artists and jewelry makers who received special training and supplies of equipment to produce Lionfish jewelry constructed from the spines and fins of the fish. Two very successful jewelry makers have now through our connections established regular supply to US based outlets.

During our volunteer season, we have specifically selected a locally owned and run hotel, thus ensuring a very valuable revenue stream for the owners. In addition, we organize, 'out of working hours' trips to locally owned bars and restaurants in order to ensure maximum community benefit from these visitors.
