1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The views from the vineyards and forested areas from the river were fantastic. The kayaking was really nice. We especially loved the hike through the vineyards and walking around smaller villages in the late afternoons. The guides and our driver were very friendly and helpful. We really felt they were our friends just a few days into the trip.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We used local resources (restaurants, hotels, small shops, and taxi drivers). We used public transportation for much of the trip.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

In each Kayak expedition through the Douro valley, World Heritage since 2001, we try to demonstrate that we can interact with Mother Nature without creating traces of human presence.
All the material we use is recycled and recyclable, so we avoid waste and rubbish.

Despite the little rainfall, there are water springs in the villages we will visit.
By using water from fountains, we avoid the use of plastic bottles.
Each participant will have its own water canteen.
Whenever possible we will use this water, coming directly from nature.

More than 80% of the expedition is done by Kayak, allowing a unique contact with the crystal clear waters of the Douro River. The transfers will be by train or van.

We prioritise staying in small villages, staying on farms or in family houses.
We avoid large hotels as much as possible because of the environmental impact they have.

It is our mission to take care of our "road" - the Douro River. Thus, we invite everyone to collect the rubbish that is found in the waters of the river.

People

Along the Douro Valley, there are different communities, each with its own cultural, gastronomic and landscape characteristics.

The community principle - give and take - is being reborn in the Douro valley. There are farms in the Douro valley offering accommodation and meals in exchange for help with the grape harvest. During the harvest months (September/October) we participate in this annual agricultural event, helping the farmers with their crops.

Villages, monuments, farms where they produce Port wine, old bakeries, spas with therapeutic waters. With all this we are invited to participate in the life of each community - getting to know, participating in local activities, tasting the tasty cuisine and staying in family accommodation.

On each expedition, we want to leave our mark on the communities we visit.
The simple and hard life of the people in the small villages of the douro valley, teach us how grateful we are to learn old customs, participate and enjoy all that the communities offer us.
