Description of Family adventure holiday in Bulgaria

Discover the wild charm and hospitality of Bulgaria, on this week-long family adventure holiday. Spend four nights on a farm, where a herd of 500 cows and many sheep and beehives are kept, exploring the area by day and tucking into delicious homemade dinners each night made with organic food picked fresh from the land. You’ll also have a night in capital Sofia and in the beautiful town of Plovdiv, with guided tours of each.

On the farm you can switch off from globalisation and relax into a different rhythm. There is lots to keep little ones busy. Help out with mowing, sowing, digging in the garden and picking herbs and mushrooms, then explore the surrounding countryside. Visit the mystic Thracian Tombs and temples scattered through the mountains and enjoy cycling along the newly opened Trans-Rhodope cycling route, following the meanders of the Arda River. Try gold panning in Arda River then enjoy a kayaking adventure, paddling to Borislavtsi village to see sesame oil and butter being made in the traditional way. Go horse riding one day, and keep your eyes open for the region’s amazing birds of prey. Golden eagles, Egyptian vultures and Griffon vultures can all be seen at close range.

The Eastern Rhodope Mountains are a very special part of Bulgaria, home to a great deal of wildlife, including wolves, and the best place in the country for spotting raptors. In the Arda Valley, you can see two thirds of all bird of prey species in Europe, and your trip will also support local Madjarovo Center for the protection of rare bird species.

You’ll end your holiday in Plovdiv, spending a night here and enjoying a guided tour will reveal the lovely old cobbled streets of the Old Town, the Roman Amphitheatre and the town’s beautiful period houses and museums.

Staying at the Wild Farm was very memorable in itself as the place gave the children the opportunity to play with their pets and play outdoors when we were not doing activities. Betty, our host, was lovely and included our children in family games. Read full review

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

I have created this special family adventure trip in Eastern Rhodope Mountains, because this is the best place in Bulgaria for watching raptors. By participating in our trip you support the local Madjarovo Center for protection of rare bird species. Within a distance of only 15-20 km, along the valley of Arda, you can watch two thirds of all species of birds of prey, inhabiting Europe. The larger part of them is listed in the World's Red Book of rare species. It is a once in a life time experience of short-distance observation of golden eagle, Egyptian vulture and Griffon vulture, wolves!

People

A secluded ancestral house, at the entrance of the village has become a home for an incredible young family from Madzharovo. This is not the common "Guest house" - it is a home, always open for all friends, old-time friends, as well as newly met ones; for the ones, seeking freedom, the call of the wild and the colour of life. The Wild Farm and Eastern Rhodope Mountains are a very special place for many wild animals, such as vultures, big hawks and globally endangered raptors. In the farm there is a herd of over 500 cows and bull from indigenous breeds, which are bred the whole year round out in the free, in harmony with the laws of nature. In the Wild Farm you can also see wild bee hives, Karakachan sheep and dogs (indigenous breeds).
