Description of Family holiday in Sabah

This family holiday in Sabah, Borneo is based in the east of this exquisite Malaysian state, starting in the Sepilok National Park area, where you have plenty of time to relax after a long journey in a family friendly jungle resort. There is nothing like a visit to Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, however, to wake you up to the wildlife wonders of Sabah, a 43 square kilometre area where these precious, rare primates are brought after being rescued from harm’s way. Visits generally take place during feeding sessions and other wildlife treats here include sun bears, gibbons and Sumatran rhinos. We also get to explore the orangutan’s natural habitats, staying in a jungle lodge on the banks of the Kinabatangan River, accessible by boat.

Your next few days are in the wildlife but also adventure filled Tabin National Park. A place to swim under waterfalls, go on a night hike to hear wildlife waking up, watch elephants and playful macaques. One of the highlights of Tabin is a trip to a mud volcano where myriad wildlife comes out to gorge on minerals emanating from it.

The last few days of the holiday are all about family time at the beach. Sabah is famous the world round for its wildlife, but it’s less well known for its gorgeous sandy beaches. After a domestic flight from Tabin to Kota Kinabalu, you will stay at a beach front hotel having plenty of time to see just how wonderful they are, with spots like Tanjung Aru and Likas Bay Beach firm favourites.

This itinerary has been put together based on the summer school holidays. With some superb jungle activities, it is recommended for children from eight years and up, but do chat with us for more advice regarding your family’s interests and needs.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I can't name only one!! If I really had to choose, I'd say the Borneo rainforest
lodge in Danam Valley. Stunning location, amazingly helpful and knowledgeable staff and beautifully maintained lodges. Could not fault it.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Even in the dry season, leech socks are necessary for Tabin and Danum Valley.
Buy buy them there, not online. MUCH cheaper! This is a BUSY schedule involving very early mornings most days, as that's when you're most likely to see wildlife. Having a few days of relaxation (in our case Gaya Island) was perfect to recharge before heading back to the UK.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely benefited local people and supported conservation. Certain efforts
appear to have been made regarding environmental aspects (using solar power, use of environmentally friendly bathroom products etc.)

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Holiday of a lifetime! Literally could not fault it.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

We use local partners who share the same values as us when it comes to wildlife. The guides they use around the Kinabatangan River and Tabin know the area very well, and show respect and care when taking families and younger children on the trips. They take part in Orangutan research and nest surveys in Sarawak with the Sarawak Forestry Cooperation and Wildlife Conservation Society Malaysia.

Our local partners have won a number of sustainability tourism awards.

We steer towards small scale hotels, that have character and heritage rather than large modern chains as we like to support local businesses and heritage. Most of these have interconnecting rooms to support the family.

Our local partners also support local community projects in Sarawak and have a 27 year sustainable tourism and community partnership with 4 Iban communities.

In our Know Before You Go which is sent to clients before travelling, we encourage them to take care with water usage as usable water is a rare commodity in Borneo. Take water bottles and filters with you, and make sure the kids have had all of the necessary vaccinations too.

Our environmental policy begins in our Brighton office we are very passionate with recycling, and have a strict recycling, no waster policy. We encourage our clients to take care when travelling, and send a fun responsible travel infographic with information on how to do this. Our local partners also have a recycling system in their office.

People

As both of our main specialists have travelled to Borneo and know the best local places to eat out and visit so can support you and the family with the types of food you would expect too. We like to support local businesses and restaurants hence only arranging breakfast in hotels where the client has opportunities to eat at local restaurants nearby.

The beach hotel accommodation is locally owned and run, although a small chain, but employs local workers and staff and promotes delicious local food in their restaurants so there is something for everyone.

We support a local charity called Reef Guardian which supports the marine park off the coast of Sandakan. Clients have an opportunity to donate £5 to the charity when booking, and this is something you can discuss with the kids.

Our local partners comply with all relevant laws that protect the rights of their employees. All staff have employees contracts and understand the terms and conditions of their employment.

During the clients visit to the National Park, the clients have an opportunity to buy local handicrafts created by the local community at market stalls on the side of the road. They are perfect souvenirs for children to take home as memories to keep in their rooms!

All guides are trained to assist clients in travelling with respect and we also inform client before they travel about appropriate etiquette in Borneo. Family travel in Borneo is becoming popular, and our guides are very welcoming and enjoy having the children around.
