Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

CARBON REDUCTION:
This luxury island hopping itinerary has been created to ensure that it has a positive impact on the environment. We encourage travellers to prioritise a trip further away for longer rather than several shorter trips throughout the year.
For example The InterContinental Tahiti works toward waste reduction, training its team to be mindful of its carbon footprint.
As a hotel they are constantly measure the energy and water consumption and use the information to monitor and to further reduce the resort’s usage. By following this method the hotel has reached 80% of full LED lighting on the property, as well as having a solar water heating system and optimised air conditioning system with efficiency management including door sensors and temperature regulators to keep helping to reduce energy usage.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE:
It is important that we hand-pick lodges that have a positive impact on the environment and actively preserve this for future generations. The InterContinental Tahiti true to its sustainability mission, striving to provide authentic and enriching travel experiences for its guests. In this way, the resort is committed to protecting its surrounding communities and nature.
This hotel is actively engaged in coral restoration and transplantation projects and works with the marine research laboratory CRIOBE (Centre de Recherches Insulaires et Observatoire de l’Environnement) which helps preserve the fragile reefs.
This initiative helps monitor 200 local marine species, while also helping to educate guests on French Polynesia’s incredible ocean biodiversity.

LOCAL ECONOMY:
We promote small lodges that have a positive impact on their surroundings and give back to the local community.
In the InterContinental hotel shop, they show off the fantastic creations from local Polynesian craftsmen as well as offering local cultural activities. The chefs source local ingredients where possible and prefer short supply chains which in turn support the local community. The InterContinental Hotel encourages skilled local artisans by purchasing their handicrafts, including coconut frond baskets, traditional tifaifai bedspreads and vibrant painted pareos.

In support of the island's businesses and artisans, the hotel prides itself in sourcing supplies and ingredients as locally as possible, including from our staff’s family farms and shops to ensure income goes back into the local community.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY:
When guests venture out on excursions we choose accommodations that use local guides which we believe offers a more authentic and educational experience for guests. It is very important to us that the money goes back into the local economy to aid the local communities where guests are visiting.

For example, InterContinental Tahiti prioritises hiring locally, the resort offers professional training and development programs to the staff, who benefit from educational lectures and field trips.
