Description of Highlights of Ancient Greece holiday

This Highlights of Ancient Greece Holiday is a cultural tour of Greece’s most important archaeological sites, taking in the beautiful coastline of the Peloponnese Peninsula, as well as traditional villages and mountains. Starting in Athens, you’ll spend two days exploring the highlights of the birthplace of democracy, before heading out to discover the country’s historical hot-spots.

These include the Ancient Corinth, one of the major cities in the antiquity and an important trade centre; the archaeological site of Mycenae, the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon; Mystras, the most famous medieval town in Greece; the sanctuary of Delphi, set on the slopes of Mount Parnassos; and the UNESCO Worldwide Heritage Site of Meteora, where ancient monasteries perch on top of rocky pinnacles.

This is an easy tour, travelling in a small group with an experienced guide, with two to four hours of driving in a minibus per day. In between visiting key sights, there’s time for lunch breaks, as well as free time to explore on your own.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The overall itinerary was excellent. I was pleasantly surprised by Corinth, thrilled by Messene, impressed by the museums at Olympia, and awed by Delphi.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Arrive in Athens a few days early, and be sure to see the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, and if possible, the Museum of Cycladic Art and the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Tourism does support local businesses. Travel necessarily consumes resources, but it also promotes understanding that it essential to good policies and decisions.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Accommodation and Meals:
We spend the trip in smaller, locally staffed hotels on a B&B basis and use local restaurants for the rest of our meals therefore ensuring that our visit benefits local communities. The hotels use a range of environmental regulations to minimise impact on their surroundings e.g. in some hotels solar panels provide clean energy and separation and recycling of rubbish is thorough. Produce used at the hotels is locally sourced wherever possible as there is so much on offer and this is a way to support local suppliers. Different tavernas and restaurants are also frequented throughout the trip, where clients can sample authentic Greek specialties like, bean soup, olives, fresh grilled fish or meat, seasonal vegetables and regional cheeses and other dairy products.

UK Office:
It all starts at home so we have first worked at reducing our carbon footprint in our UK Offices. Through energy conservation measures and recycling policies, we are proud to be actively reducing the waste produced and our impact on the environment. We support various projects all over the world to try and give something back to the places we visit.

Group Size:
This small group tour has a maximum of 16 participants, meaning that we have a low impact on the environments and communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. The small number also allows us to stay in unique, family-run hotels that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to their limited sizes.

People

Local Craft and Culture:
We visit some of the most important historical sites in Greece, such as Mycenae, Ancient Epidaurus, the medieval city of Mystras, Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, Delphi and the unique “stone-forest” of Meteora. By spending on entrance fees and souvenirs on these sites, we support the maintenance of these significant archaeological sites and the jobs they create for local people.

A Fair Deal:
We work closely with our local operator to run this trip in a way that aims to reduce impacts and to give as much back as possible to the local communities. Part of this is employing local leaders, who are committed to responsible tourism and helping to preserve the way of life in their area. The leaders will give a briefing on responsible tourism issues to help you understand how you can help reduce your impact and maximise the benefits to the local community from your visit.
