Description of Holiday to Malta and Gozo

Malta might be one of the smallest countries in the world but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in character. A sun-drenched Mediterranean archipelago, Malta also boasts several truly ancient religious landmarks, and no fewer than three UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Valletta and the Neolithic temples of Ggantija.

You’ll begin with a ferry transfer to spend a few days on the tiny island of Gozo, where you’ll explore the capital, Victoria, with your tour leader. Nearby highlights include the Ggantija, which pre-dates the pyramids of Egypt; Calypso’s Cave, which some believe is mentioned in Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ and a beautiful red sand beach.

Returning to Malta itself, see the historic glories of Valletta, its architecture and natural harbours, before continuing on to the ‘Three Cities’ of Senglea, Vittoriosa and Cospicua, considered the cradle of Maltese history and full of medieval charm.

In Sliema, you will embark on a cruise through the harbor, dockyards and surrounding creeks to appreciate the scale of the fortifications built to protect the city over the centuries, and the following day there’s the option of cruising out into the Med to see the incredible Blue Grotto.

Staying in small, often family-run accommodations and eating predominantly at local restaurants too, this tour allows you to get further than skin-deep into Maltese culture. Another aspect likely to prove particularly attractive to foodies is that you will learn about the production methods behind, and of course taste Maltese bread, olive oil and wine.

Holiday information

Small group tour, ideal for solos & couples:
Small group travel is not large group travel scaled down. It is modelled on independent travel – but with the advantage of a group leader to take care of the itinerary, accommodation and tickets, and dealing with the language. It’s easy to tick off the big sights independently – but finding those one-off experiences, local festivals, travelling markets and secret viewpoints is almost impossible for someone without the insider knowledge gained from years in the field. Those with a two-week holiday, a small group tour will save valuable planning time.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

CARBON REDUCTION

When dining in restaurants our tour leaders also offer advice about what to order based on what's in season and what has been produced locally. As a travel company we're acutely aware of our impact on the environment. Each one of our tours displays a carbon footprint, and we're working to reduce our emissions by regularly reviewing our itineraries and embracing lower-impact styles of travel such as trains, public buses or walking – which aren't just better for the planet, but we believe offer a more enjoyable and authentic travel experience too. We're a Certified B Corp that's committed to creating unforgettable adventures while protecting our planet for future generations.

ENVIRONMENT & WILDLIFE

Though you will need to drink plenty on this trip, we encourage you not to buy bottled water due to the plastic waste this generates. Tap water is perfectly drinkable in this area so bring your own reusable water bottle, it does not taste the best so you may prefer a filter bottle.
We strive to support nature and biodiversity through protection and regeneration projects, and for every customer that travels with us we make a donation to Rewilding Britain and Cool Earth.

We encourage customers to avoid single-use plastic on tour, and our leaders give advice on refill points each day. Where tap water isn't safe to drink we recommend Water-to-Go bottles, a filtration bottle allowing you to drink water from any source.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

Our trip benefits a wide range of people in the islands, from the small hotels we stay in, to the transport providers, restaurants and other small businesses. Notable are local crafts such as baking, wine making and olive production that we are more than happy to support! On Malta most companies choose to visit the island of Gozo as a day trip and so little money goes to the hotels on the island or to the local staff they employ. We have therefore chosen to spend two nights on Gozo, so that we can explore the sights whilst making sure money is going to the local hotel we use and the local restaurants and attractions that we visit on this smaller and far less touristy sister island. In the Maltese Archipelago we work with local operators. All our Tour Leaders are trained by us in the importance of responsible tourism with guidance given on how they can make a difference. This not only provides direct employment within the hotel, but also has the effect of percolating money beyond to small businesses that supply the hotel and in this way money is spread throughout the region we visit. Other people too benefit from our visit including drivers and local guides, as well as the staff in our local handling agent's offices, which are based on the islands.

Our leaders are the heart of tours. They bring passion and unrivalled knowledge of the destinations and communities that we visit. Their guidance ensures we observe the cultural norms in a destination, they act as a bridge between travellers and the local community and ensure that tourism is a positive experience for both host and guest. We believe in supporting local; staying in locally-run hotels, exploring markets, buying snacks from street vendors, and by doing this we add money to the local economy and enhance our connection with the local community.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY & DIVERSITY

Our local agent employs mainly local Maltese staff and 20% from other nations. At holiday times like Christmas the company and its employees give a donation to charity to help those with less through the holiday season and beyond. Our local partner invest in its staff and pays them well above minimum wage. This trip is considered to be LBGTQ+ friendly.
We believe that diversity is to be celebrated and as a Certified B Corp we're committed to championing equity and inclusion throughout our entire supply chain. We believe that an inclusive approach is essential, and that the best results occur when contributors have different opinions, experiences and backgrounds to bring to the table.
