Swimming in the crystal clear warm Adriatic Sea from the back of the boat, at isolated coves. Visiting the beautiful island villages/towns .

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It’s very sociable which we enjoyed so be prepared to join in, you’ll be enjoying your meals on group tables onboard of all ages and nationalities - on our trip 8yrs - mid 70’s. Expect to be eating locally sourced traditional Croatian meals. No burgers or chips thank goodness!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes we ate every evening in local restaurants on the islands and mainland. Our guides were local residents at each place.

Excellent - would highly recommend and will book another with you

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The staff, the other passengers, the tours.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring laundry soap to wash in your sink. It's expensive on the boat and there is not time in towns to do it.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. I did feel good portions were big and I wasted a lot of food. But I get it.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was an amazing trip. We are already looking for similar sized trips to other areas.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Dubrovnik was the highlight. It is the most beautiful small city we have even seen.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Spend extra time in both Spit and Dubrovnik. Take motion sickness medicine in case the sea is rough.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It was lovely to have dinner at a very local restaurant.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was an excellent holiday.

review 29 May 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was so exciting every time you pulled into a new port and pulled right up to the promenade of the town. Our favorite destination was Korcula and our guide was fabulous! It was great to have a guided introduction to each of the destinations as we arrived - then have time on our own to explore and stay out late.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring water shoes to swim and to navigate the rocky beaches. Binoculars are especially helpful if you enjoy seeing the many sites along the journey/route.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes! Many of our stops involved the local communities and vendors. It was especially helpful for our cruise director Aida and the local guides to provide insight on the local economy, how individuals make a living and how we could support them. The local Croatian dinner was also a great experience and way to support the local community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was a 5 star holiday! What a wonderful experience!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The small towns on the islands had a benefit from our visit.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

5 stars - the water is just so clear - you can see the bottom where boats are tied up and only 2 meters deep. Beautiful country with blue water, green mountains and building of stone with tile roofs.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We felt privileged....to arrive in lots of gorgeous places right on the harbour front. Loved the almost daily swims in crystal clear water...again a real treat.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't overpack...low key hot weather holiday wear rather than glitzy "cruise wear."

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Local people yes...in that the cruise company is all Croatian owned and Croatian staffed. Also we ate out in local restaurants and drank in local bars most evenings, and any excursions were with local companies. Environmental...? Couldn't say. Conservation...I don't think so

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Local people with the income that's generated with tourism

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Beautiful ship wonderful people working on the ship. Made friends that will get together later in life.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We have an amazing time rate at a four star. I wish you would have let us known that the total Itinerary had changed. We booked a year and a half ago. If we had known, we could've made plans to see things that we thought were on the trip on our own.

Read the operator's response here:

Hello Susan. Thank you for your feedback. My apologies, we did send an updated itinerary to your travel companions but, for some reason I have no explanation for, we didn't send this to you. I am pleased and relieved that you enjoyed your cruise so much despite the change. Yours PE MD

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I really enjoyed the day we had a swim off the boat and then visited the beautiful port of Pucisca

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Book it now! The Majestic was a lovely ship with a great crew and we had a wonderful holiday. Made even better by a very good cruise guide and a fabulous set of fellow passengers and great weather

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

As there was no evening meal provided we all spent money at the ports where we docked on meals, drinks and lots of ice cream. Ship helped to reduce environmental impact through reducing single use plastic and providing drinking water to fill our water bottles.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent holiday. First time in Croatia and would consider going again. The sea was so clear and the cities and ports so clean and the people friendly

review 28 Sep 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The lovely little towns / harbours on route, the good food available in most of the restaurants and the quality of the ship and included meals. I particularly liked the fact that customers had come from around the world and that it wasn't an all English group.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Add extra time at the end in Dubrovnik. There is lots to see and it's easy to spend a few days there.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Local people benefited from most evening meals being taken on land and that local guides were used.Providing a drinking water source on board meant that one didn't have to buy plastic water bottles. I was not happy that many shops sold coral jewellery in huge quantities and I did question the tour manager on the sustainability of this. The answer was totally inadequate and based on the local economy. I think that customers should be advised against buying it.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent, with the proviso that more time should be allowed for the towns we stopped at. There was too much swim time and time spent stationary, when we could have arrived earlier in the day and had more time to explore.

review 11 Oct 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was all memorable! Being a small group of passengers meant it was easy to engage with each other both on and off the ship. Staff we’re particularly helpful and friendly. Food was of good quality and presentation.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This type of cruise is not suitable for wheelchair users. To enjoy the cruise and the tours fully, you do have to be mobile. I would say it is manageable as long as one can manage a few stairs and is able to walk a moderate distance. I would recommend trainers or similar for general footwear, particularly when on a tour.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, for the most part.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent!

review 28 Jun 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Swimming daily in the gorgeous Adriatic! This was absolutely the best way to see Croatia.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Small ship cruising is so nice. Fewer passengers with an excellent crew and the ability to see smaller islands without unpacking and packing every time you change locations.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Eating our evening meal onshore certainly allowed us to support the local economy and to enjoy the community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely five star! The ship (Olimp), the crew and the food were all outstanding!

review 24 Jun 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We loved the ship (Futura) and every place we went to. Every place was different and interesting, and there was a great balance of guided tours/swim stops/free time. We really enjoyed socialising with fellow passengers from all over the world and made new friends, and the set up on the ship and the itinerary enabled this.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't take too many clothes! It's very relaxed and casual. Be prepared for a lot of delicious food on the ship! We took snorkelling gear but didn't use it. Take water shoes for the beaches in Croatia.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We would hope so. We ate at local restaurants when we had a free evening. One of the organised trips was a visit to a donkey farm and had a meal at the konoba belonging to the farm owner. We also had a visit to a wine cooperative.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was excellent! Surpassed expectations! The staff were outstanding.

review 20 Jun 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole trip went perfectly. The ship, the weather, the fellow passengers and the wine.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Certain that local people benefitted from our type of cruising and the benefits were spread over the various islands that we visited.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Near perfect.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Croatia is rather a hidden gem - beautiful coastline and islands, clear seas, pleasant people and a lot of history. The islands of Hvar, Vis and Korcula are particularly beautiful. Dubrovnik was very interesting and Split was a very pleasant surprise.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Consider some time ashore before and after the cruise. Dubrovnik and Split are fascinating and well worth a longer visit. Also the cruise ships vary quite a lot - worth researching one which suits you best.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Tourist income is obviously important to people on the islands as well as Dubrovnik and Split. However, the rapid rise in the number of small cruise ships threatens the tranquility of this coast.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Sadly a couple of things conspired to make our trip not as good as we hoped. We had a change of ship just before the cruise which wasn’t quite as luxurious as originally planned. Secondly the weather turned to be less pleasant than usual meaning that the schedule was subject to last minute changes so we missed some highlights such as the Mljet National Park and the Blue Cave. The excellent crew and the cruise director did their best but overall we were a little disappointed.

Read the operator's response here:

Hello Keith, and thank you for your feedback. We were disappointed that you had to change vessel as well, but i can assure you that the change of vessel did not in any way contribute to the stability of the vessel. I was on a different vessel the same week in Croatia and we were all just very unlucky with some unseasonable weather that effected all of the vessels sailing that week. The Blue Cave is only accessible when the seas are very calm, as the entrance is very small and only small rowing boat size boats can access it and only then when the seas are very calm. No one was able to visit the Blue Cave for a couple of days at least, it was nothing to do with the vessel that you were on. Mljet Island is further out than the other islands you visited and not protected by any outlying islands. My understanding is that no small vessels visited Mljet on the day you were due to go due to the rough seas. Again this as common to all small vessels, not just the one you were on board. Wjile there are quite a few small vessels that ply the Croatian Coast, there are no more than there were 4 years ago. No new vessels are currently being built and the few that have launched in the last few years repleaced some older vessels that have retired. These small vessels do help preserve the character of the many small ports and harbours that they visit by alleviating the pressure to build many more hotels and other accommodation taht is only required for the 4-5 months of the year of high demand. They also play a major part in help sustain the viability of the small communities on the island by providing a good income and demand for local produce. Some islands have suffered over the last 20-30 years from depopulation, and the opportunities provided by tourism, and the demand for local produce on the island and ports that are lucky enough to have ships visiting goes some way to reverse this. I am sorry that you were dissappointed by the vessel, but the poor weather that you experienced had a similar effect on all of the small ships that week (as I can testify) and in no way contributed to your missing the Blue Cave or Mljet.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The country, villages, people, all worth it

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure that you will be allowed to use all the facilities (aka jacuzzi) any time you want to. Other boats from the same company could, we were restricted.. Also ask if a large group has book most of the ship or not

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It did feel like we weren't pouting either, which is GOOD

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great, but also we are easy and did not want to bother, but our Captain wasn't very permissive. The music stopped in our boat -captain's dinner night- 3 hours prior to all the neighbouring boats.. I travelled with a 7 year old that is super adaptable, but she was the youngest after myself..

review 15 Aug 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The tour of the island of Vis.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take your own toileteries- miniscule amount supplied by the tour operator.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Limited yes to your question- many of the guides were conservationists.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I had a thoroughly enjoyable trip.

review 14 Jul 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Cruising around the islands - stunning scenery

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Most places insisted on cash only………..had to use ATMs daily , luckily they are plentiful.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes . Minimal negative impact on environment throughout

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Really good but felt the boat crew had minimum numbers and were struggling - bar service was limited in evenings on the boat …..lights off at 10.30 pm didn’t go down that well . Boat needs to have a better vibe in the evenings…..lighting, music ,

Read the operator's response here:

Hello David Thank you for your feedback, it is very useful. I am surprised to hear that most places requested cash, that is something that may have changed recently as debit/credit card use has been widespread for a few years. I am going back to Croatia in a few weeks and I will check this out personally. The crew numbers are the same as usual - They don't usually keep the bar open late on board as most people spend their evening ashore so their is limited demand. It isn't possible to have music too late on the vessels as this would disturb passengers on near by vessels. I absolutely agree that Croatia is a beautiful country, and these small vessels are the best way to see it. they provide vital support to the local economy and minimise the environmental effects that large ships and hotel building would have? Best wishes Powell Ettinger MD

review 1 Jun 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We enjoyed all the aspects of the holiday, especially visiting the Mjlet and Dubrovnick

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

No, not particularly

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good - really well organised and the staff very helpful and accommodation.

Read the operator's response here:

Hi Nigel, thank you for your feedback and I am glad to see how much you enjoyed your cruise. I was a little surprised and disappointed to hear that you didn't feel there were any positive benefits for the local population. The small vessels we use in Croatia are all owned, operated and staffed by Croatians, mostly from the coast and islands. All the food on board is grown locally, and you will have eaten in restaurants every night, supporting the local economy and again creating a market for a lot of local produce. All the staff on our small ships have a vested interest in maintaining the pristine environment as their livelihoods depend on it - The beaches and coastline you will have visited are always very clean, and the water very clear and blue. The small islands and ports we visit don't allow larger ships to visit, and these small ships help provide a vital income for the small island communities, while negating the need for a lot of hotel building and other developments that would only be used for 6 months of the year.

review 21 Oct 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The stay in Dubrovnik

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Check the details thoroughly before booking a cruise on Katarina Cruise lines

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, in so far as tours were on land and the opportunities to have buy produce or meals on islands was available. Better than a full board cruise in our opinion. No real evidence that the holiday supported conservation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Generally, did not live up to high expectation. Small penny-pinching attitude of cruise line spoilt overall impression.

review 25 Sep 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Visiting one or two of the uskands

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Accommodation and storage small for two. No cushions for the sun beds. Food average.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Met some nice people. Staff were very good.

review 15 Jun 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Swimming from the back of the boat. Seasickness on the day it was choppy!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared that it might rain! The drinks on board are VERY expensive, with the result that guests on our cruise did not socialise on the boat in the evening. Unsuitable for single travellers.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

In so far as all the crew were Croatian, and we ate on shore every evening, yes, benefitted local people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A good “taster experience” of some of Croatia’s islands.

review 14 Sep 2021

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The beautiful coast line, the amazing and clean medieval towns and the friendly Croatian people.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for no food choice when eating on board. Don't buy the wine on board. They charge around £25 for wine sold in the supermarket for £4.50 and its awful. Buy wine from the wineries on the shore stops and take the £5 corkage charge. It works out much cheaper and the wine is very good.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It benefited local people because we spent money on local food and services, including the crew.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The boat was very clean and well maintained. The captain and the cruise director run it like clockwork. Somewhere, towards the end of the holiday my wife and I both got very bad food poisoning at different times, which of course ruined the last few days. I don't believe we got food poisoning from the ship.

review 13 Sep 2021

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Discovering Croatia. Very beautiful and amazingly clean everywhere.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

M/S Antaris is a luxury shop. Food a little disappointing but everything else was fine. Cruiseansger

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes we had several meals, drinks, guides at various places.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. We were lucky with our fellow passengers and all got along well and had fun but that you can't know when you book!

review 9 Oct 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The views of the coastal landscape, harbors, towns and cities along the Croatian coast

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If this is your first time to Croatia, see it by boat or small cruise ship. You'll see more that way and get a better overall sense of the country and the beauty is has to offer.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Currently tourism seems to be Croatia's biggest industry and all of the locals we met and spent time with seemed to really appreciate and embrace visitors.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

My wife and I are seasoned travelers, and from our perspective, this was a great trip from virtually all perspectives.

review 22 Sep 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was ALL amazing. The trip exceeded my expectations. Our tour guide Minja was a jewel. The crew was lovely. I loved every island we visited and the swim stops were spectacular. I loved practicing yoga each morning on the top deck of the Lupus Mare. I enjoyed every fellow traveller on our trip and had the opportunity to get to know each one. This trip was a GREAT introduction to ship travel.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Pack less than what you think you need. Plus it's fun to shop in the local towns for fun, inexpensive beach wear. Let every new port reveal it's own special magic to you!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I know our trip benefitted local people on our part. I loved shopping in the small, quaint shops on each island. I also enjoyed having open time to dine in each port. I believe that helped support local economy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would give it the highest rating. It reached beyond our expectations. Great ship (the pics don't do it justice), crew, and itinerary.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't overpack. Limited storage and dress is very casual.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It was good that we spent afternoons and overnight in ports which meant that we definitely spent money locally.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic trip. Exceeded expectations.

review 17 Sep 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The stunning scenery and the incredibly friendly Croatian people wherever we went.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Pack casual! And invest in some beach shoes - invaluable on all of the pebbly beaches and when snorkelling from the boat.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Being in port overnight meant we were able to enjoy local restaurants and bars. We visited the national park on Mljet so saw the results of local conservation. It would be a good idea instead of handing out plastic bottles of water each today to have a water dispenser on the ship and to maybe give a keepcup on the first day which guests could then refill at their leisure - we threw away a lot of plastic bottles between us all!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The holiday was awesome. All of the arrangements were faultless, the itinerary was great and the quality of the accommodation on the ship surpassed our expectations. We would highly recommend this to other travellers.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Certainly supported each village as shopped ate and a few drinks where had.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It exceeded my expectations. Lovely people on the boat. Terrific staff and mostly great food.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The entire trip was memorable and exciting.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Turn up ready to meet great people and have fun.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I certainly know that I did....and I'm sure that all the other passengers did as well.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A fantastic holiday that I would happily do again. The cruise director, Captain and all crew were fabulous, the ship was immaculate, the on-board food was great and the itinerary was perfectly managed.

review 18 Aug 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The tranquility on the boat, the swim stops and the excellent balance between organised activities and free time. The Croation wine, Dingac, was lovely.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Croatians prefer cash to credit cards so make sure your bank cards are set up to withdraw sufficient cash to cover your outlays. There are plenty of ATM machines in even the smallest twons.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I feel that our holiday did benefit local people, there are many Croatians dependent on the tourist industry and the people we encountered were keen to ensure our holiday was enjoyable. As part of our trip we visited a nature reserve and cycled around a lake, the conservation measures in place on this island were impressive. On Hvar we visited a farm where everything we ate and drank was home produced -from the olive oil and bread to the vegetables in our tasty dinner. We ended up buying some of the essential oils they produce, some olive oil and some wine which we hope benefitted the local community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was a very enjoyable holiday with a nice mixture of relaxation and activity.

review 29 Jul 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Effortlessly getting from one beautiful island to another - all stunning, yet all different.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Come, relax and enjoy - everything is taken care of for you. Spotless boat, fabulous crew and excellent guide.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Good tip to bring a re-useable water bottle with you to use on board. Small size of boat meant we could get into small bays for swim stops which was nice. All in all felt everywhere unpolluted. Noticeable lack of rubbish in all towns.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely excellent. Standard of food was outstanding. Nice surprise to have complimentary wine at lunchtime. Even better that we were able to organise how we spent each evening, and not be tied to the boat (however nice that was!). One small point - there weren't enough sun loungers for all the passengers on the sun deck.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Te fantastic excursions they planned for us. Oyster-tasting on Slano, Wine-tasting on Vis. Bar-hopping (!) on Hvar. The sights were incredible and we had excellent guides at each stop.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring your own water toys. We got to stop every day for a swim in the crystal clear waters of the Dalmatian Coast. But there were more water enthusiasts than equipment on board, so it would be helpful to have your own noodle, inner tube, etc. My husband brought his own swim noodle, and we all had all of our own snorkel gear. (they did not have any snorkel equipment to rent)

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Well, with our purchases of food and drink, plus souvenirs of the trip, we were definitely contribution to their economy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This is an AMAZING tour. Being on a small ship with people from all over the globe was a real treat! The ship was impressive - and brand new. We had our own private balcony which added to the feel of luxury. The meals prepared by the ship were delicious! Our ship, the Markan, also served wine with dinner or lunch which was an unexpected treat. There were several areas of the boat where you could get together with others, or if you prefered solitude, that was readily available as well. I cannot say enough about this wonderful experience. We took our whole family and it was incredible for ALL of us!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Swimming in the seas off the back of the boat in coves.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be sure to book a cruise that is not all inclusive. Our highlights included spending evenings in the local port experiencing the local culture and spirit at local restaurants and bars. Eating on the boat, whilst quality food, was nowhere near as much fun. And rather dull given that you are docked alongside several other boats with no view.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes it benefitted local people given the use of local guides and the oyster trip was a local business. eating at and visiting local restaurants also helped. However, the failure to provide free water to drink with meals on the boat is unacceptable. The idea that they were trying to save water in some way is simply inconsistent with the need to be hydrated. This was worsened by them only providing water in bottle of 0.5L. Larger bottles would reduce plastic waste. In any event they should have had a supply of the large water dispensers used in water coolers. This would also reduce the plastic waste. Having made the claim that limiting the use of water is important, they failed to have toilets with two buttons to reduce the use of water. Instead the cistern was emptying every time unnecessarily. And finally there was no plug provided for the wash basin. Given that this was advertised as a luxury cruise, the charge of 7 Euros to rent a beach towel was absurd. We were not given this information on the detailed advance info sheet. The ship is a hotel...which luxury hotels charge for the use of a towel?! Several people bought cheap towels at the market instead. How can it be considered responsible to encourage people to buy towels which they have no need for and will likely get thrown away afterwards?

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The tea and coffee machine was only available during meals and for an hour afterwards. At other times you had to pay for it. It is normal in hotels to provide free tea and coffee facilities. This just seemed petty.

Read the operator's response here:

Hello Phil Thank you for your review and feedback. Croatia is a fantastic destination and the coast and islands are rightly very popular - I am glad you enjoyed them. You make a couple of points and I will take them in turn. Water provided on board. While we do tell everyone in advance that .5 litre per person per day is provided, we have been trying to change this for some time. This is not to save water, but the vessels owner's hope to increase revenue - This is an established system amongst vessel owners in Croatia (each vessel is usually owned by the captain and his family) that we are trying to change and indeed many vessels are now installing water coolers. The vessel you were on is one of the older vessels of her type in Croatia (Albeit only 7 years old) and newer vessels do have better water management systems. Beach towels - These are small vessels with limited storage space and washing facilities, and as many clients don't require beach towels charging for their use does help the environment by reducing washing, transport and manufacture. I don't visit many beach style hotels, but I know that many hotels don't provide beach towels, and ask their clients not to take their towels to the beach. Most vessels in Croatia only provide beach towels for a fee. Reducing the use of beach towels in general has to be a good thing for the environment - I always try to do without one. I agree that information should be on the departure information sheet, it is included for most of our trips but was omitted in this case - we will rectify this. Best wishes Powell Ettinger - MD

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Cruising the islands, enjoying the beauty of the unspoilt hills and mountains. I particularly liked the monastery on the lake in Mljet. All the locals I met, including all the staff on the ship, were uniformly delightful.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Go as early in the year as you can to avoid the crowds. A trip to enjoy for the beauty of the natural sights and the character of the older towns (and for activities such as swimming and cycling) rather than for memorable art or buildings (apart from the palace at Split).

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It benefited local people - Croatia seems to live entirely on tourism (I think 80% of the economy is based on it). Certainly by going so early in the year we were not adding to the crowding of Dubrovnik in high season, which I think must make it completely impossible to enjoy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The wet (but calm) weather made it parts of it quite dull (most of the planned activities could not run), but I understand that so much rain was very unusual even at this time of year. I'm very glad I went, but it wasn't the most memorable of the (many) trips I have done.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Early morning walks - before the ship left port - in the island towns. No crowds, great light and a sense of peace, surrounded by hundreds of years of history.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure that you know before you go about the 'rules' of the particular ship and then check and re-check if you can. For example, according to the information that we received, the cruise was for adults only. Nonetheless, there were four small children on the cruise and three of them were predictably rowdy and disruptive. It wasn't the fault of the children. They were just being themselves in a totally age-appropriate way. Their parents could have been more directive, and I would have appreciated that, but I understand that parents, too, would like to be holiday mode. However, we prefer to take our holidays without children and were careful to try to book a cruise that was right for us. Unfortunately, there was a misrepresentation..

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, we did. We were particularly pleased to have been able to spend our money for several meals in the local towns.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would like to rate it highly but, unfortunately, as described above, the cruise was not what it was advertised to be. In addition, we also experienced a few other problems: #1 In the material that we received when we boarded the ship, there was a 'welcome note' that included a printed statement that the cruise was non- smoking, with one exception - the area on the Sun Deck directly in front of the captain's 'wheelhouse'. At our first meeting on the ship, just before the welcome dinner, the cruise director announced two additional smoking areas: the area on the Standard Deck at the rear of the ship adjacent to the swimming platform and the small seating area on the Main Deck in front of the two VIP cabins. In addition, we discovered that the two cooks liked to smoke immediately outside of the kitchen so that added a 4th smoking area. Because of the scientifically-proven deadly health harms caused by second-hand smoke, and our desire to avoid exposure to second-hand smoke, we raised the issue with the cruise director and asked her to adhere to the original information as set out in our 'welcome note'. The cruise director refused to do so. She eventually said that she would speak to the captain, who was entitled, she told us, to both make and change any of the information set out in the 'welcome note'. We did not receive any feedback. We waited for a couple of days, assiduously avoiding the several smoking areas, and then asked the cruise director for feedback. Basically, she told us that 'nothing could be done' and she was unable to explain why the official 'welcome note' had information in it that was different from her announcement. #2 The lunches and dinners served on the ship were interminable. It took around 2.5 hours for the three-course meals to be served. Conversation at the tables was usually interesting but we would have preferred faster service and/or buffet-style meals so that instead of being cooped in the dining area, we could be outside on the sun deck or outside seating areas. #3 We booked one of the two Upper Deck VIP cabins as a treat for ourselves and paid an extra GBP 280 per person for the privilege. We were hoping for a peaceful area with views of the water and passing islands and were prepared to pay a little extra for it. In addition, from the diagram of the ship it appeared that there was a small 'private' seating area immediately in front of the two VIP cabins and that was attractive to us. Unfortunately, not only was there no benefit to paying for the VIP cabin but there were, in fact, many disadvantages. Firstly, the cabin was very small. Secondly, the seating area was public and because our cabin windows looked directly out onto the seating area, we frequently had people sitting or standing immediately in front of our windows blocking the views and the light and on a couple of occasions, we even had people peering through the glass into our cabin. In order to dress/undress in private, we had to shut our curtains, which rendered the room dark and pokey. In addition, the people congregating in the seating area were sometimes loud, the children used it as a playground and some of the crew members used it as a smoking area. Finally, there was no indication on the map of the ship that the area immediately behind our cabin was, in fact, the kitchen. This meant that we had to contend several times a day with kitchen noise and food smells.

Read the operator's response here:

Hello Mrs Lambert - Thank you for your feedback, and I am sorry that you felt this holiday fell below the high standards we set ourselves. I will take your points as follows: Smoking: The only assigned area on the vessel is in front of the Wheelhouse. Smoking elsewhere on the ship should not be happening and action will be taken to reinforce this policy, particularly regarding the chefs smoking near the kitchen area - this should not happen and will be stopped. Meals: If meals took up to 2.5 hours then this is not usual and there must have been unforeseen difficulties on those occasions, for this we apologise. Meal times will usually be over a period of around 1 hour. VIP cabin: The VIP cabin in which you stayed in is a top level cabin and is located on the Sundeck of the ship. The sundeck is open to all passengers and so it is highly likely that other guests will be using the area for relaxing and admiring the views. No cabin is advertised as have a private outside space other than those cabins with balconies on some ships. You enquired about 2 cruises with us, 1 of which is a child free cruise, the other not so. We offered you a few choices, 1 of which was a child free cruise but you chose a different cruise -You didn't ask us for a child free cruise and the cruise you booked does not state that it is child free. Thank-you again for your feedback it is most welcomed.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Every aspect of this holiday was memorable - Croatia is truly beautiful with such an intriguing history, and being made up of so many islands, a cruise like this was one of the best ways to experience the place. This was our first visit, and we got a glimpse of the local flavour from each of the small and big islands that we were docked at. We especially loved the warmth of the crew on board the cruise and how they took care of us including our dietary preferences (as my parents are vegetarian), as well as the opportunity to meet some lovely people from around the world on our cruise.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I would say don't forget to carry comfortable clothing, footwear, lots of sunscreen and swimwear (as the swim breaks along the way are not to be missed)! The other tip would be that most of the places along the way only accept the local currency Kuna, so do make sure you keep a sufficient amount with you (of course there are plenty of ATMs in the bigger ports).

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes - I do believe that it benefited the local people, as we spent most of the afternoons and evenings on shore which generated business for local shops, cafes, restaurants and tour guides as well. We also bought special products like Croatian wine, lavender, figs and olive oil produced or grown in the region by home-run units. Being a small ship cruise, I feel the environmental impact was fairly low.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would rate it as an excellent holiday overall! Positively beautiful and enriching- it had the right mix of relaxation, adventure, exploring new places and experiencing the culture of Croatia while sailing along the Adriatic.

Yes the holiday benefited local people, we ate in the towns, gained a greater knowledge about Croatia. Sadly the large cruise lines really ruin Dubrovnik . It no longer feels authentic but more like Disneyland which is sad.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Our holiday was all the more enjoyable because travelled at a leisurely pace and could stop to swim in quiet bays. The atmosphere on the boat was relaxed and informal, so the range of nationalities and ages got on well together. The crew were friendly and helpful as well as being knowledgeable about the places we were visiting.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for a quiet week of gentle cruising though with visits to busy towns along the way e.g. Split and Dubrovnik. The holiday is sold through a number of companies in different parts of the world which may create different expectations. The Norwegian family of five (including two teenage boys and a younger daughter) were told it was a family-oriented trip. I don't think they were disappointed, nor were the older travellers.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The boat and crew were locals from a village near Split. The meals on board were all locally sourced. Most nights we had dinner in local restaurants.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

An excellent introduction to small boat cruising. One family had their passports etc stolen before they started their holiday and the captain was able to adapt the itinerary so they could go to Zagreb and still make the last couple of days of the holiday. Can't do that with 2000 passengers!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The friendliness of crew and fellow passengers. We were a diverse group from South Africa, Chile, America, Belgium, Slovenia and U.K. and ALL got on very well together. We had 21st birthday and 52nd anniversary ( ours!) whilst on board and much merriment shared by all. The captain’s dinner entertainment was brilliant.. Minja ( our tour guide) was excellent. Very informative about our daily visits and activities, extremely helpful in so many ways and always friendly, patient and kind. She is a treasure.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

No need to bring towels for after swimming, or ‘noodles’ for non-confident swimmers....both are provided. But DO bring beach/swimming shoes as beaches tend to be pebbly.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Many evening meals were ashore therefore sustained the catering industry.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was the best holiday we’ve had for a long time. Every day we had interesting shore stops with well informed local guides telling us the local history as we walked through towns or state parks. Then there were the terrific sea stops in beautiful coves with pristine blue water for our daily swimming. It was great fun to just jump off the back of the ship, though you could climb down the steps into the water if you preferred. On ‘lazy’ days you could just sun bathe on the sun deck or sit in the jacuzzi which was very relaxing, the choice is yours. I’ve rated this as a 5-star holiday but 5 is nowhere near high enough...it was excellent in every respect.

Hello Mr Jewell. Thank you for your kind words about your recent Croatia cruise. I am sorry that you felt that your trip didn't benefit the local population in anyway. The trip is designed so that you get to go out for dinner on most nights in the restaurants and cafes of the small ports you are staying in which provides some income for these establishments. The crew of the vessel you were on were all Croatian and work on these vessels is much sought after by the local community. The vessel is owned locally owned and managed, and was built in Croatia, all of which provides considerable input into the local economy. And finally almost 100% of the food you are served on board is from local producers, so we are also supporting local farming and fishing communities.

Nor sure about impact, other than all potable water on board was in small plastic bottles, paid for by passengers after the first one a day. MUCH more environmentally and passenger friendly would be a large jug of water for refilling bottles and/or using biodegradable cups

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Read the operator's response here:

Thank you for your feedback, I m glad to see how much you enjoyed your holiday. A cruise on a small ship in general won't improve the environment, but it is usually better than a large vessel and various other forms of transport - Especially a flight. There are some benefits in that having more accommodation available negates the need for building hotels, which can be bad for the environment (Quarrying, transport, building etc). We do try to minimise the environmental impact of the cruises, for instance the vessels usually only motor for around 4 hours per day - Larger vessel are forced to cruise for much longer as they can't stop in the nearby small ports. I believe Responsible Tourism is more than just the environment though - To support the local communities and customs it is important that people do visit, and how they visit. The ship is locally owned and managed, the crew are all Croatian, and you will have spent a lot of time ashore eating in restaurants and cafes, and using local guides, and we consider that to be very important. We are starting to implement water coolers or similar on some vessels to reduce use of plastic bottles, but this doesn't come without its own problems. Having jugs of water available doesn't always work well on boats when the sea is a little choppy. Additionally the first vessel that installed a water cooler found that the passengers, who are not necessarily as environmentally aware as you or I, used hundreds of cups, way more than the number of bottles that were used. Finally it is worth noting that by law in Croatia all the plastic bottles have to be recycled, and there is a small refundable fee on each and every one.

Not really. It did often feel as if there were too many people visiting Croatia.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

For a purported luxury holiday there were a few issues; - transfer from flight to boat had us waiting t the airport for 1.5 hours - tea and coffee was charged outside the hours of breakfast -paid for an upper cabin and got a lower deck cabin. Staff were very good and couldn’t fault them.

Read the operator's response here:

Firstly my apologies, I am not sure why you were charged for a main deck cabin and provided with a lower deck, this should not have happened and we will refund you the difference – A lower deck cabin was £1445 and upper deck was £1595, so we will refund £300 immediately. Some sites in Croatia, especially Dubrovnik, can get crowded in peak season, though some of the itinerary is designed to avoid the crowds by visiting places such as Vis and Mljet. The authorities in Dubrovnik re now starting to limit the large cruise ships that visit, as it is not just the number of visitors, but also the way they visit that can cause issues. We do state on our trip information that tea and coffee are not included in the cost. The wait for the transfer is highly unusual, but can happen at busy times I am afraid – We are trying to limit the number of vehicles employed for transfers by passengers sharing vehicles..

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Taking a cruise is largely hassle free so is the ideal choice for people looking for a holiday where they don't have to engage their brain too much. The walking tours were mostly very good quality and a great way of spending time with people who really know their city as well as people who are passionate about their country and its rich history.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring inflatables, games, download entertainment and have plenty to do for teens because these cruises tend to target the over 50s. Our teens resorted to watching the TV in their room too often for my liking, whereas a few games on deck or more water inflatables could have solved that very quickly.

Thank you for your feedback.. I am a little surprised to to see that you don't think the cruise will have benefited the local economy. The vessel is owned and crewed by Croatians, and all the food served on board is bought locally. Additionally you will have eaten ashore on most nights providing income for all the small restaurants and cafes that line the ports, and many of which grow their own produce locally, including wine, cheese and olives. The vessels pays mooring fees to the small ports that larger vessels cannot access thus helping maintain the ports facilities.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Swimming off the back of the boat in crystal clear water in bright sunshine and surrounded by a stunning backdrop of mountains. The mix of nationalities, whether by chance or by design, made a huge difference - UK, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Norway, Northern Ireland and Russia all represented and all (mostly) prepared to share experiences and contribute to the group.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure you understand where the crowds will be so you can plan your visits. Learn the basic phrases in the local language and try them out with a smile.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Certainly helped locals, although if the meals on board had been smaller we'd have spent more ashore. If managed properly then the use of small ships rather than multi-thousand passenger big ships is far less intrusive on local communities.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The help from Responsible Travel in selecting the cruise, arranging the add-on at the start of the trip, hotels, rail tickets and transfers meant a stress free holiday.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Having a nautical experience while knowing there were professional sailors at the helm. Each arrival at a new island brought new excitement.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't take too much - a carry on cabin case should suffice. And bring a sense of humour - there's many new friends to make. It helps if you like talking:-) Some of the ports can be noisy at night with young party goers so ear plugs are useful if you want to get an early night sleep.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, local people benefit from the on-shore spend and eating out.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Just go - it's a wonderful experience and I really feel grateful to have been there. Our fellow sailors became the Majestic Moments (named after the boat). There were so many majestic moments I didn't want to leave our wonderful boat and the jolly crew, plus the fastest Captain on the Adriatic.

On the islands we visited we were able to buy products grown/made locally so benefiting the local community.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Docking at all the different ports of call, beautiful places like a setting from a time capsule

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't take your mobile phone is number one, as you disturb all your fellow passengers.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yep it sure did but the pricing was a bit steep for what you received

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The food we were served up was well below what we all expected for an upmarket cruise, other then that all good, I would rate it a 7 due to the poor standard of the meals served up.
