122 Bhutan holiday reviews
It was brilliant - not crowded; think Switzerland with higher mountains, paddy fields and Buddhist temples. Learning about the culture in such a quickly
developing country was fascinating. (more)Sam Chakraverty
It was absolutely brilliant; the food (simple but tasty), the local people (friendly and welcoming); and the scenery (stunning). (more)Suzanne Dinning

Gatling Valley was the most beautiful place I have seen, but the whole of Bhutan is stunning its hard to pick a favourite.
Tips?
Don't over pack a few good pairs of walking trousers, make sure you do take waterproofs and women need long sleeves (past elbow) for most of the Dzongs
Local benefits?
I think it did benefit local people as we stayed and ate in local loxal places run by families.

The Jambay Lhakhang Festival and Tiger's Nest Monastery; the journey through the Himalayas.
Tips?
Pack layers - the temperature will vary during the course of the day; prepare for mostly vegetarian meals; slip off shoes are helpful as you will remove them often; prepare for a beautiful and enjoyable journey.

Our most memorable day stated with us watching women playing darts on their village green then hiking to a temple cut out of the cliff-face that no other 'tourists' were visiting. But we also enjoyed having a discussion with a local family while we cooked dinner together and we won't forget being 'blessed' by a monk in the family's house the next day! (more)Helen Veitch
The whole trip to Bhutan was absolutely amazing and every single moment will be remembered for ever. (more)Jenny Smith

Most memorable, Tiger's Nest Monastery in Bhutan. Besides, natural beauty of Nepal and Bhutan, and amazing historical monuments
Tips?
Well, some things other people might not like though we endured them: terrible pollution and traffic in Kathmandu. If you like luxury holidays this isn't for
you.

The scenery and spirituality of Bhutan is unique and a once in a lifetime experience for my family.
Tips?
Even in late spring weather was unpredictable. I would be trekking with shorts and a tee shirt in the morning, long pants and fleece in afternoon and wishing for ski gear in the evening before going to bed.
Local benefits?
Sure, every dollar spent in Bhutan on environmental friendly tourism allows the country to stay the path in rejecting other ... (more)Robert Whitmore
My tour guide and driver were very good and Bhutan itself was magical. In particular, even I prepared extensively for this trip I learned a great more about Buddhism and its philosophy from my guide.

I fell in love with Bhutan while doing the Laya - Gasa trek, which is magnificent, challenging, and just a lot of fun. The landscapes in Bhutan are absolutely stunning, the history and culture fascinating, and the people incredibly generous. Life above the treeline is extraordinary.
Tips?
This trek is absolutely worth it, but also challenging. You spend a lot of time in high altitude. The trails are steep (constantly up or down), rocky, and muddy.
Often all ... (more)Maria Cohn

Visiting mountain people in their homes. Our guide arranged for us to eat lunch in a house when a snow storm made eating outside less than appealing. The other participants on the trip where all very interesting, well traveled folks.
Tips?
Ignore the description which says that the temperatures in Paro range between 40-70 F. This info is useless. The weather on the trek is completely different. Bring lots of layers. Be prepared to eating in the evening ... (more)David Reynolds

Please don't make me choose the best highlight - but if I have too, then it was the drive from Thimphu up through the Haa Valley, which has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth - you have to see it to believe it. (more)Deb English
Visiting the Gangtse valley where we stayed two nights so we could spend a day hiking. There was a glacial valley where black necked cranes overwinter. Felt we engaged with the local Buddhist culture and appreciated the way its' values inform the way that local people behave and their courtesy towards visitors as they know that tourist tax benefits Bhutan.
