Reviews for Rwanda primates & Mafia Island holiday
Roberta Moscovitz review 18 May 2024
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Memorable was the Genocide memorial in Kigali. And although I was well aware of the genocide and the remarkable advances Rwanda has made since then, the memorial was not on my radar. I thank Elenore for recommending it. Of course exciting was seeing the gorillas in their natural habitat.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
While the gorilla trek is doable for anyone who is in reasonable shape, the trek to the Diann Fosey gravesite was much more difficult. I'm glad I went, but keep that in mind.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, local people were employed at all the lodges I was at. Make sure you request local ownership of the lodging in Kigali if that is important to you as it was to me.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Overall, the holiday was excellent. I am happy the diving was is Mafia Island rather than Zanzibar. I understand that the combination of gorilla trekking and scuba diving is unusual and so few would sign up for this, however, the only thing that would have made this holiday better is if it was a small group adventure. The private guide was reasonable from an expense standpoint, but I found that experience isolating.Jeffrey Carlin review 28 Oct 2019
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Spending time with the mountain gorillas in Bwindi national park. Truly a once in a lifetime experience being up close and personal with a remarkable primate.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Bring fresh $50 bills for visas on demand. Uganda gave us a hard time about dollars older than 20133. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All the staff at the lodges and all guides were locals supporting the local economy. Most of the staff was using the money to support their extended families. Lodges by and large were trying to be environmentally friendly with solar electricity and hot water heaters4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Amazing Lodges were outstanding. Guides and staff were excellent and welcoming. Countries depend upon tourism to bolster their economies.Holiday Reviews
