From school to hikes you have limited time for down time and limited access to restaurants so prepare for making your own meals to fit with the scheduled itinerary

Yes I had to provide my own meals so shopped locally and enjoyed multiple lunch meals at local restaurants.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Lots to choose from! The lessons were brilliant and judged just right for my ability; the walks in Los Picos were beautiful; everyone was very friendly and welcoming; the ecological walk was fantastic. The cheese!

Local people ran the course and guided us on the walks. We stayed and ate in locally owned small businesses.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

review 29 Apr 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The daily hikes and “field trips” in the local area while interacting in Spanish with the teachers, guides, and local people. The Picos de Europa are well worth a visit and this was an excellent way to experience it. The local guides were very knowledgeable and continued our immersion in Spanish. I really enjoyed Rosa’s hikes, her concerns for our safety and her sense of humor.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I was happy to have my hiking poles, especially as there had been rain and some trails had loose rocks or were slippery. Ask in advance what to expect on each day’s outing so you can be prepared. I stayed in the Bardenilla apartments and cooked light meals. Do know that there are no spices, cooking oil or coffee provided, so you might want to plan ahead for that, especially if you are fussy about what you eat. We were able to purchase basics in the local stores.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

100%. Everyone I interacted with was a native of the local area and we were definitely supporting local businesses.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very happy to have had this experience. Of course, 4 days of classes is not long enough to learn Spanish. Everyone in my class had taken Spanish classes before. What was effective was having to use Spanish throughout the days, speaking with different people. I don’t know if I spoke any better after the week was up, but I certainly got over my shyness about using Spanish and gained confidence that I could engage in a conversation.

review 5 Nov 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Meeting the staff involved with the school and exploring the local village.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Come prepared for all weather types!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, definitely. It's a small town and the school provides jobs and tourism to the local community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic. I am so glad I did this trip and would highly recommend it to anyone hoping to learn Spanish in a beautiful, authentic setting with lots of hiking opportunities.

review 12 Oct 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The walks in the Picos were exciting with marvellous views of spectacular scenery. Also memorable were the trips during the Spanish lessons to a chapel, the library and the village where the lessons were held. They were a good insight into the local Spanish culture.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The Bardenilla Apartments were brilliant - clean and comfortable. I would recommend staying there, especially if you are a vegetarian and need to prepare some of your own meals. The local restaurants do not have many vegetarian options. Be prepared for any weather. We had extreme heat. I had to buy a sun hat. We also had a day of rain where I needed overtrousers and boots with a good tread as the ground was slippery.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The holiday benefited the local community because we used the local shops and bars, stayed in local accommodation and provided employment for locals in the school. I'm not sure it necessarily reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation but it was definitely a holiday with a low impact on the environment and Rosa, our walking guide, pointed out some of the flora and fauna along the way.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I really enjoyed the holiday. It helped me to improve my Spanish and the walks were amazing. All the people I came in contact with were lovely. It was hard work but very rewarding.

review 12 Sep 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I enjoyed it all, from meeting the other students, to the lively and interesting lessons, to the walking, which was ideal for the weather conditions (hot), and suitable for the abilities of the students. The entire holiday was well organised, with good communication throughout.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Have fun! The team will appreciate your enthusiasm, and will help you to learn as much as you are able.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We made good use of the local bars and restaurants, and of course, contributed a little to the local business and team.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellently organised, and very enjoyable.

review 10 Jul 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The combination of Spanish classes and hiking was perfect. The language teacher and the guide were both great - extremely professional and generous with their knowledge. The best part was learning about the local history, culture and landscapes through excursions and hikes. I loved it!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I nearly opted to just do the Spanish classes in the morning which would have been a mistake. The whole day schedule (I did the afternoon hikes) really worked well as it was full immersion and really fun - a great way to get to know this beautiful part of Spain. Because the school is so close to the route of the Camino de Santiago- Camino del Norte (near Unquera), it's a great place to break the walk, learn some Spanish and go hiking in the Picos de Europa. You can rejoin the walk in Unquera or catch the narrow gauge train to a station further down the line.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We ate in local restaurants and bars and shopped in the town. The school was really well run, super friendly and made it so easy to organise the trip - so i think supporting this small local business, as well as the local guide was important.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fabulous!

review 23 May 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There is so much that is memorable

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Stay at The Bardenilla Apartments which are superb, beautiful surroundings, spotlessly clean, well equipped with a host that really cares for you

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, there is a serious attempt to reduce the impact on the environment, the Owner, Ana's husband is a farmer so we spent a walk with him learning about sustainability and farming practices that go back centuries in his family

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Just got back from the Walk and Talk holiday in Panes, Asturias, which was simply brilliant! The course was so well organised as was the content and the quality of the teaching. A nice touch is you are picked up from your hotel in the morning by Kathy, a local taxi driver who also engages you in Spanish, followed by lessons in the morning for four hours, then lunch followed by a four hour guided hike by a trained local person, Rosa, who builds upon the mornings lessons by engaging in conversation with you. The scenery in the Picos de Europa is breath taking and my language skills have grown immensely, thanks to Ana, the owner, Alex, Celine, the excellent teachers. I would recommend staying at The Bardenilla, apartments, run by another and lovely Rosa and her Husband which are superb and fully equipped.

review 13 May 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It is impossible to pick one thing that was particularly memorable. The whole trip was outstanding. The teaching in the morning was great. I have intermediate level Spanish and although the material was not new to me, I feel my understanding and speaking has improved enormously. The teachers we fun, very clear and patient. The walks along the coast and in the Picos were fabulous, as were the guides. Being with a great group of students made everything fun. Also, I think that the organisation of the school, accommodation and transport was superb.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Do it! Take the opportunity to speak Spanish all the time, not just in class, but also on walks and in the shops and restaurants in Panes.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, The school is run and owned by local people and have a very strong ethos about conservation and recycling. All the restaurants, taxis and accommodation we used were locally owned.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic! I can’ wait to return

review 27 Mar 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Learning HOW to learn a language. The staff were so patient and friendly. An outstanding experience and I can’t wait to go again. The hotel and school staff were very helpful in arranging transportation on my extra days.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure to make time for the caves at Altamira if at all possible. It’s about a hour away by car, but I arrived at Santander, went to Altamira on a Sunday ( free!) and Ana at the school arranged for me to be picked up from there. The nearby town of Santillana del mar is lovely, as is Comillas, which features the delightful Capriche by Gaudi. The local walks are also very enjoyable and our guides Rosa and Julian could not have been more charming.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, I stayed in a local hotel and ate out with other students at local restaurants. I’m hoping that the language school will continue to bring people to this beautiful part of Spain.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Outstanding

review 11 Sep 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The walks in the beautiful scenery.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

To double check that you can join a group of people at the same stage of learning as yourself. I was constrained by dates and so joined when the school told me that I could not join the other groups - I was uncomfortably in the middle. This unfortunately did impact on my learning experience, both in terms of the lessons themselves and the walks. I can't blame the school, because they did tell me - however, I probably should have queried it further. They are only a small outfit and not set up to manage multiple groups at different levels.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great

review 31 Oct 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The walks and getting to know the area, won't forget the MOUNTAINS, lovely people and actually really enjoyed the lessons (classroom learning isn't my thing, but they taught so well!).

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take euros in cash as local shops/restaurants seem to prefer. This area is well-worth visiting.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We had brilliant local guides, were off the beaten track. Taken to a small producer to buy cheese/ meat/honey/herbs from if we wished.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Brilliant! Loved it, very happy.

review 3 Oct 2022

I enjoyed the variety of walks. The Spanish lessons were enjoyable too, although I struggled a bit.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

To have a reasonable knowledge of Spanish before you go.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We stayed in local accommodation and ate in local bars and restaurants, so yes, we felt that the local economy benefited and therefore the local community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very enjoyable. And something a bit different to our usual holiday.

review 24 Sep 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Not only did my Spanish improve considerably, my knowledge and appreciation of a heretofore unknown part of Spain was icing on the cake! And I felt proud that my septuagenarian legs transported me through the mountains and the fields.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Regardless of your level of Spanish proficiency, try to follow the school’s recommendation to speak Spanish throughout the day, every day. And bring multiple layers of clothes!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely, the tour operator is without a doubt a local endeavor—consisting of people who know and love Asturias. In addition to the school staff and the guides for the excursions, all the other service providers were local—enabling quite a few people to remain in this part of rural Spain. A feat that not many other small town Spaniards can afford to do.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Estupendo!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The natural beauty of the Picos de Europa and the coastal towns I visited during the walks.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for all weather conditions

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I think that the Town of Panes where the school and accommodation is located benefits from the holiday. The restaurants/cafe use local produce and are run by locals and walking has low environmental impact.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A most enjoyable experience - the language course and the walks were well planned and executed.

review 6 Jun 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We really enjoyed our 2 weeks and recommend it highly. There were two of us, and we are at different levels, so we were in different classes. The Spanish training was great, all in Spanish. The hikes were also great, with the guides speaking in slow, intelligible Spanish.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We stayed in the Apartamentos La Bardenilla and appreciated the presence of a washing machine, a fridge, and basic cooking facilities. Rosa the owner is very flexible and helpful.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Through field trips, we got to know many merchants and public servants in Panes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.

review 20 May 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Meeting new people - both local from Panes and students from around the world.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Go for it!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

In May, Panes is very quiet with few tourists so I believe we did help to support local businesses at that time of year. The walks helped us appreciate the local environment and the farming economy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent - a fabulous experience - great opportunity to practise your Spanish and be taken on interesting walks by a local guide.

review 25 Apr 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I enjoyed the combination of learning Spanish in the morning and then practising the Spanish in the afternoon whilst walking in the area close to and in the Picos de Europa.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure you have suitable clothing and shoes for the peaks.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We stayed in an apartment that was owned by a local. We ate in local restaurants and shopped locally.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The classes were well prepared for us. Very small classes. The walks were chosen to reflect our preferences.

review 27 Mar 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The hikes - they were stunning and each one was different. They were also a fantastic opportunity to practise my Spanish outside the classroom environment. But the whole trip was memorable, as everyone went out of their way to make me feel welcome and to personalise the experience according to my interests.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

- Make sure you have hiking poles! You'll enjoy the walks a lot more if you do. - Try not to arrive too late on the Sunday as most of the amenities will be closed.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Everything I did was done with locals who live in the community - teachers, guide, taxi driver, accommodation host etc. There was a strong focus on connection with nature and appreciating the natural world.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic. One of the best trips I've ever done - I wish I could have stayed longer and I definitely want to go back.

review 19 Mar 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I came away with many wonderful memories from my trip. The walk up to the Mirador de Santa Catalina was particularly beautiful. Ana and Julian were kind enough to invite me to a traditional Asturian dinner with their family and friends, which involved some traditional sidre pouring and lovely food.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I traveled to Panes by train and coach stopping of at Paris and Bilbao on the way there and San Sebastian on the way back. If others are interested in doing this, there is good guidance on the Man in Seat 61 website on getting to Spain by train (https://www.seat61.com/Spain.htm#london-to-san-sebastian-by-train). Once in San Sebastian (a beautiful city which would be great for surfing in the summer!) I would recommend taking an Alsa coach to Unquera, a town close to Panes. The school can help you get from Unquera to Panes by taxi or similar. The school were deeply helpful in helping me plan my travel and booking my accomodation.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It helps bring money into the local community and helps people appreciate the beautiful landscape of the Asturias

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I had a brilliant time and as a almost complete beginner when I arrived, I feel like I have much better Spanish vocabulary, understanding of verb conjugation and confidence to speak basic sentences in Spanish. The walking was wonderful, although in the late Spring and Summer I'm sure it's even nicer, as I attended in mid-March.

review 15 Oct 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The combination of using your brain in class in the mornings and your body when walking in the afternoons!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be open minded!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I felt that the school was very much part of the community and students on the course are very much accepted in Panes where the local people in shops and restaurants seem happy to welcome them.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The school is very well organised and lessons were appropriate for my level of Spanish. The teaching standard was excellent.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It’s not an easy place to get to but doable. Very few restaurants in village and limited choice especially if you don’t eat meat or pork products .

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes - supported the local community

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Good - enjoyed the course and walks

review 27 Sep 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Beautiful location, meeting like-minded people and enjoying practice the language in the local bars, shops and restaurants

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't go if you are not fit enough to walk a lot (4-5 hrs) without comfort breaks. There is no option to join in a bit of the walk, it's all or nothing and its all hilly. Also, the language school does not cater well for absolute beginners. If you know no Spanish, don't chose this holiday.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Local people yes, especially the businesses, can't comment on reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Only a 3* and that is purely because of the location and the people I met. The school cannot cater for complete beginners and the walks are for 4 days not 5 and they are all or nothing. The agenda for the week and they are not very flexible when it comes to making changes

review 1 Nov 2021

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The amazing scenery and truly lovely people we met (teachers, guides and locals).

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to just jump in and give it a go with your Spanish. There's lots to learn and plenty of chances to use it! We stayed in a little apartment in La Bardinella and it was perfect for us as it had a little kitchen and felt very homely. It was a very short, beautiful walk to the Peak Me school. The views were stunning too - especially dawn over the hills and mountains. The guides for the walks were great at making sure the walks were just the right level. Just let them know what you're up for. You really are spoiled for choice for walks, views and wildlife spotting.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I felt that we helped bring money in to the local (agricultural) area.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great fun. Very rewarding to challenge ourselves to learn Spanish whilst being really active in a stunning location.

review 15 Jul 2020

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

All of the walks were spectacular but my best memory was the day a guide took us round a beautiful local farm and into a cider orchard-an excellent opportunity for me to put my Spanish into practice whilst learning so much more about the local culture than I would in any tourist attraction! All the classes were enjoyable with a good range of tasks and difficulty levels, and the instructors were clearly well aware of our individual language levels and needs on arrival.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

From the point of view of learning Spanish it is very important people try to “think” in the language through the day, including talking to the tour guides and restaurant staff in the evenings as much as possible. The classes are just in the morning and felt like they were over quite quickly! I would happily recommend all of the eating places I visited in Panes and especially the hospitality of the Hotel Elena staff!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The setting in Panes was beneficial for local businesses, and tutors at the language school took regular opportunities to acquaint us with local services in Panes (including the library and church) giving an excellent feel for the history and culture of this part of Spain. I learned a lot about the biodiversity and wildlife in the area, so the holiday was very beneficial in terms of environmental awareness. Walks were local or just required short lifts, so transport impact was minimised.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was an enjoyable week, with just the right balance between planned activities and time to unwind or explore the village on my own. Although it was relatively quiet this week, everyone that I met was very friendly and conversational which made a big difference. Having subsequently visited other areas of Asturias I can recommend visitors take the opportunity to visit other places in the area- the scenery is delightful and there is much to see!

review 20 Oct 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Staying in a small village that allowed to get to know the local ways of life. Plus all the peacefulness and beauty of the local landscape! Fantastic!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The hikes organized by the school are not particularly challenging and adjusted to the general group level. So they depend a lot on the participants' fitness. In any case, they are all very beautiful and the guides can take suggestions.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I felt it benefited local people by supporting local services

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was great. I came back relaxed and fully recharged.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Impossible to choose - location, food, excellent teachers and good company from our classmates.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you're a complete beginner a little prep would help - even just a bit of time on the Duolingo app.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely benefited local people - accommodation providers, local restaurants and shops, activity providers. And of course the operator and its employees which is a small local business.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We had a fantastic time. The combination of lessons and walking was a great balance. The structure of the classes worked well. All the teachers were excellent and we had great fun. I would highly recommend this operator - the organisation & delivery were seamless from first enquiry right through. The area is beautiful and the food in Panes was great. We plan to return!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was all good. Great group of people, interactive Spanish lessons and beautiful walking in the region.

Spend the weekend in Santander or Bilbao rather than staying in Panes as not much to do here at weekends and limited transport.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole experience was very well organised and an amazing experience. Attracted to the holiday for the walking, my husband and I, weren't quite sure what we would think of the Spanish lessons, but were willing to give it a try. There is so much more to this holiday than walking! The village of Panes is in an area of absolutely outstanding beauty, has a great selection of bars, places to stay, and welcoming and friendly locals who like to encourage you to speak Spanish. The way the holiday organised by Ana and her team. Put into small groups of similar ability (5 in our group), the morning Spanish lessons were brilliant! We had fun, got a great grounding of the language in a very short time, and all got to know each other very quickly. After long lazy lunches practicing newly learnt Spanish, the afternoons were spent hiking with the same group and a guide, walking a different area every day. Our group got on so well we met up for evening meals and even all went out on a day trip to Potes together on one of the two days we had no lessons. There is so much to do in the area we will definitely go back, we aim to continue learning Spanish and keep in touch with our new friends.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Definitely try the Kayaking. Only ever Kayaking once before, we did this amazing experience on our last full day. A whole afternoon kayaking with a picnic (provided in a waterproof barrel where you can also put your phone etc and fits nicely in the Kayak) and a swim in such a beautiful area - we loved it! Recommend water shoes for this.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes I do think the local people benefit from the tourism and didn't experience anything that could be considered adverse to environmental issues or conservation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent! Highly recommend this holiday. Traditional, cultural Spain at its best.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The walks in the Picos de Europa and along the Atlantic Coast were wonderful.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you don’t have your own transportation, consider weekending in one of the bigger cities. The weekend bus service in Panes is sketchy!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I suspect the Language school is a major contributor to the local economy: transport, local restaurants and accommodation, and the walking-adventure partners.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. I loved it. The language lessons were very well structured and the walks were great.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We learned a lot of Spanish in just one week - five mornings of lessons was just the right amount to stretch our brains and give us basic vocabulary for the rest of our trip. Three teachers meant that we had plenty of variety and didn't get bored. The walking in the afternoons was also pitched at the right level after the first day's walk was used to assess our fitness.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Any small amount of Spanish you know in advance will be useful as the pace is quite high. We rented Carolina's apartment and arriving on the Sunday meant we had the full verbal instructions for the apartment in Spanish from the owner when we arrived. Instructions for the washing machine would have been tricky without the international symbols on it! It's a great place to stay, just 3 minutes walk from the school along an off road path. Be warned that there is no wi-fi in the apartment.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Local people definitely benefitted from the presence of the language school in Panes. The hotels and apartments have many bookings, even in the low season, and we ate out every evening so the bars and restaurants benefitted from our custom. The school is popular with the local people - our last day involved inflicting our basic Spanish on them, but they responded with good humour- obviously a weekly occurrence! Travelling in a minibus as a small group to the start of walks reduced environmental impacts.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent! We enjoyed our time there enormously and would recomment it to anyone wanting to learn or improve their Spanish skills without doing a full time course.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

My husband and I enjoyed all aspects of the experience: spending a week in charming Panes with a compatible group of fellow students and friendly local people, learning Spanish , waking up to the cow bells every morning and absorbing the beauty and history of this area of Spain. The most exciting part was the spectacular scenery during the hikes, with the combination of seaside walks along the Camino de Santiago and mountain trails in the Picos de Europa.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Beginners, like myself, would benefit from some previous exposure to Spanish as the classes are fast-paced and involve learning a great deal of new material.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. The teachers at the school introduced us to the town and its residents and contributed to our appreciating its history.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent! The trip offered the unique experience of combining learning a language and hiking in a lovely area.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The hiking in the Picos de Europa and along the coast.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Excellent teachers at the school. I learned a lot in a short period of time. If you don't want to do the hikes or if it is raining, there are other options such as yoga, Pilates or getting a massage.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I went out to eat every night so it definitely benefited local restaurants. Also, the Hotel Elena where I stayed was full of students on similar trips.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I loved my holiday with. I had the right amount of hiking, and other activities, and I felt I got a lot from the Spanish lessons. All the Spanish teachers were excellent teachers with a lot of experience teaching to different levels of Spanish. I would like to come back again and try more hikes in the Picos and hopefully learn more Spanish!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Recommend staying at the Bardenilla apartments if you want to self cater, very clean , 15 minutes walk to the school and near to a very good local cafe .

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Benefited the local economy, by using shops, local produce, eating in the cafes. Attendance on the course supported a local business set up and managed by a local person and employing local people.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Felt part of the town in just a week.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I would suggest they go. It's a very enjoyable way to spend a week getting to know the area, lovely guided walks with a wonderful and interesting guide. The school is extremely well organised with fun and interesting teachers. Highly recommend it either solo or with friends.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. The school is run by local people and supports local businesses both hospitality, tourism, bars and shops. It is low impact as we're mainly based in town, but any local travel is done as a group.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very highly

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

All of it! Even though I'm a beginner, thanks to the operator, I now feel more confident using the language. Alongside the extremely enjoyable classes I had GREAT fun doing the outdoor activities (canyoning, caving, kayaking etc.) with Jesus and his guys. The scenery on the walks takes your breath away. The area is stunning. I've met new friends from the UK, the USA and Australia who I'm going to keep in touch with. All in all I had a great week.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If, like me, you don't know very much Spanish, don't worry! Ana and her staff are warm, friendly and certainly know their stuff. They will teach, support and encourage you, no matter what level you're at. Panes is a small quiet village where most people only speak Spanish so you will definitely use what you learn. There's no need to be shy. The locals appreciate you 'having a go,' and if you run out of words there's always sign language and Apps to rely on.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

With Panes being such a small place, I feel that my adventure has certainly benefited the local economy / people, and that gives me a nice feeling inside. The operator isn't a huge organisation, but that's what makes it so lovely. It's a bit of a cliche but it is actually like a big family, a big family that plays an important part of life in Panes. As for the environment and conservation, charging through life, it's all too easy to forget about our surroundings and how fragile this planet it. Taking just a week out of your life and visiting such a stunning area, reminds you of what a fantastic place we have, and that we should look after it. And you'll learn a bit of Spanish to boot. What have you got to lose? Go on, go for it.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Wonderful in every way.

The walks in the Picos de Europa were great. There were lots of variation in the scenery and the guide was very good.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Check the schedule. We had our Spanish classes in the afternoon. I would have preferred to have them in the morning and the walks in the afternoon.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes it definitely benefited the locals. Other than the travel arrangements there was very little environmental impact.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was a very good experience. My Spanish improved and I really enjoyed the walks.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Meeting with like-minded people, all very friendly and all willing to learn from each others. I certainly loved exploring the region of the Picos de Europa - much more exciting, with green and quite dramatic scenery. Lots of lovely wild flowers and extraordinary walks. The Spanish classes were good also and easy to take part.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be ready for all sort of weather - dont expect this part of Spain to be as warm as other parts but the weather was still very nice for us.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes - this worked out well because I stayed with a lovely couple and we enjoyed the interaction. I learnt a huge amount from them and I think they also liked having visitors. We used either public transport or we travelled as a group so saving on petrol and pollution, we walked a lot. The village of Panes runs a beautiful example of a green space which is a fantastic arboretum right in the middle of the village. A truly impressive realisation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent, refreshing and it was an excellent place for learning and relaxing.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were many memorable aspects to this holiday. Waking to the sounds of cowbells, the challenge of learning a new language. Walking in the Picos de Europa was amazing, snow capped mountains down to sandy beach coast. Staying in a very traditional Spanish village. Lovely food and wine.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Weather changeable at this time of year, take layers and water proof jackets/ trousers for walking. Don’t be afraid of trying your new language skills the local people are very friendly and supportive

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Stayed in a local apartment. Used local taxi for airport transfers. Shopping in local craft shops, grocers etc. Use of school very important in the maintenance of small businesses in this community. No environmental/conservation really.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent had a fabulous time

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

All of it! The week was fantastic and well balanced. Both Ana and Estrella (our teachers) were fantastic, the classes in the morning were very interactive and I felt I learnt loads about Spanish, the language as well as the culture. Then the walks in the afternoon were varied offering beautiful views around Panes and at the entrance to the Picos de Europa National Park. It was so much fun meeting both other people interested in learning/developing their Spanish and the people who lived in Panes who made us feel so welcome

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Even just a little bit of Spanish prior to the trip might really help in the classes as there is a bit of a mix of ability within each group I opted for a home stay, which was possible as I was travelling alone. I was incredibly well looked after by my hosts who were locals from Panes and I feel this really added to my chances to practice speaking Spanish and learning about the culture and local heritage; equally I was still able to spend plenty of time getting to know my classmates. If you aren't already taking classes prior to the holiday make sure to make arrangements for conversation classes or lessons afterwards to keep up all your skills!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely felt like the holiday was benefiting local people; everyone we met who was involved in the teaching course and the afternoon activities and even the airport transfers were from Panes as were the accommodation options. Opened my eyes to a part of Spain I'd never even considered going to previously but I would recommend Asturias and the Picos de Europa National Park to everyone for gorgeous walks, a rich heritage and welcoming culture

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Anyone who's interested in developing their Spanish should book onto this trip!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

This holiday was amazing! We loved all the components. Learning Spanish was fun and informative, thanks to the patience and empathy of Celine, Ana and Estrella. The walks were stunning and varied, thanks too to our guide Jesus. The hotel Elena is run by a charming couple who are happy to listen patiently to stumbling Spanish ! The village of Panes has lovely restaurants, we had wonderful food, especially enjoyed the Balcao. This holiday could be advertised as a cure for insomnia! We slept so well! We have already resolved to do it again. This is a gorgeous part of Spain.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Expect to be immersed in authentic Spain. We didn’t hear English spoken apart from our fellow travellers and our teachers. Expect everyone involved in providing this experience to be lovely people!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Staying in a small local hotel and using local shops, bars and restaurants, not using a car apart from Jesus’ van, a short flight, having an afternoon with a local bird watcher.. we would like to think so.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely fantastic.

All of it! The location, food, Spanish lessons, walks, accommodation, local food. All fabulous.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be careful flying with Ryanair. Santander was closer to Astrid than Bilbao.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We certainly supported the local business and were happy to do so. My feelings concerning the environmental impact are more mixed because of the flight. There is the alternative of a ferry from Southampton but that is prohibitively expensive.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It is the best holiday I have had!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Some time with language tapes or apps beforehand is worthwhile

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The walk I arranged with my daughter and a fellow group member from Fuente Dé to Espinaba.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The food choices available for vegans are limited, but they are available, especially if you notify the restaurant the day before. Tofu is not available in the local supermarkets in Panes.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We definitely supported the local community by eating in their restaurants, purchasing at the supermarket, and staying at the local accommodation provided. I feel we didn't leave too much of an environmental impact apart from the transfers i arranged which were by car.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I loved the combination of walking and learning Spanish. I feel the language course could be improved but overall my daughter and I had a most enjoyable week.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Some of the walks were spectacular. I don't think this was an exciting holiday but that isn't a bad thing as I felt relaxed and welcome in the village.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The langauge school is great with pleasant and friendly teachers. The course materials were well balanced with a mixture of listening, writing and speaking and a few games to lighten the mood. I had been studying Spanish for 5 years and that was a problem for me. The school is small, and because of this people with different experience are placed in the same group. Revision is always useful but the course materials were almost all familiar to me from previous courses using standard textbooks. I did not think my Spanish level improved at all. bit perhaps I was over-optimistic to have thought that it would in a week. The two classes were, in my opinion targeted at lower intermediate and beginner level. I think if I had realised that I would have looked elsewhere for a course. However the other three people in my class were very happy with the level taught, and the school would be an excellent place to begin learning Spanish.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely. We stayed in a charming local guesthouse with owners who loved to teach us Spanish and discuss the local food and culture. The village is small and friendly, so much so that within a week the bar owners could anticipate our orders. I think the food was often produced locally. The adventure tour company was local. Although we flew to Santander we were able to use local buses to reach Panes. The village is suffering from people leaving for work and the language school employs local people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The classes and walks were fun. However my aim was to boost my Spanish level and that did not happen for me

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Wonderful scenery in the Picos de Europa & good local food & cider!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Expect to do everything in Spanish! Weather can be variable so go prepared. And expect a good workout for your brain & your legs. Lots to see & do in the area if you have some extra days to spare.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We used local walking guides as well as the language school. Ate & drank in local bars & restaurants, used local taxis & I bought a few things to bring home so put something into the local economy. We didn’t directly support any conservation but hopefully were environmentally neutral.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

An excellent combination of mental (Spanish lessons) & physical activity (afternoon walks) in a magnificent area of Spain.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The people I met and business I dealt with during my 2 weeks in Asturias, especially the people of Panes.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Try to watch some Spanish TV or films or radio that you can change the audio to Spanish from say English. Also get some hills/mountain walking practice in.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Most definitely. The school has a major positive impact on the local economy as we all eat out everyday (lunch and evening) and apart from the employment and support the school gives to the local businesses it also showed us as visitors and students how lovely the region and people were there.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent and the operator and the accommodation they put me in was first class.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Not really exciting...it was all memorable. I was happy to be in the group with Ana as our main teacher. The walking was marvellous...stunning scenery and the guide was young but knowledgeable....and caring to me when I encountered precipice angst.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Check out the language level. The online test was really difficult...maybe this should be backed up with a short chat with Ana.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yep....Ana's business is definitely a major contributor to the local community, providing enhanced income for the shops and restaurants, taxi drivers, accommodation providers etc. It's a tiny village and so good to see that the villagers are benefiting and are also friendly to the international students wandering around.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good. Four and a half stars. We were a little disappointed that at the end of the Friday session there was no 'ending' ....it just fizzled out. Would have been nice to ask for our comments, feedback, a small farewell with a glass of cider or something typical from the area. Also a missed opportunity to ask us to recommend to others. I will do that anyway as it was great...tomorrow at the Spanish classes I go to I plan to tell the others about my very positive experience.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The bird-watching session was especially memorable - this was a new activity for me and a fun and relaxing end to the week. Under Arantza's expert guidance, in the space of two or three hours, we learnt how to operate binoculars and a telescope and how to spot and observe a wide range of bird life in a beautiful setting next to the river.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for a very full and interesting week. Take full walking gear, a Spanish dictionary and phrase-book, and enjoy!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The main benefits were probably to the local economy and local businesses - hotel, shops, restaurants etc. The bird-watching was done in a way that respected and actively promoted conservation of the natural environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

An enjoyable, interesting and sociable week. The Spanish classes were stimulating and mentally challenging and Ana and Celina were excellent and highly professional teachers. The mental activity in the morning was well balanced by the equally challenging physical activity of walking in the afternoon. The walks were varied and the guides friendly, accommodating and helpful. It would perhaps have been good to hear a bit more about the places we visited but, overall, an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable holiday.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The incredible scenery. The great people that you meet. The walk around the town/village on the first day, it was a great introduction to the week. The chance to practice my Spanish in the afternoons as well as in the lessons but there was no pressure.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Adhere to the kit list they send you. If you can, make time to explore the area further at the end of your week, its truely beautiful.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, we ate in local restaurants every night and visited the local cheesery and vineyards on our afternoon hikes. The guides talked passionately about local area, fuana and economy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fabulous. The Spanish lessons were fun, a great mix and balance of activities and really boasted my confidence. The walks were stunning, and the guides friendly and very knowledgeable. I was expecting slightly tougher walks, but I think the weather was an influencing factor on the activities we did in the afternoons and I enjoyed everything we did as the alternative to the big hikes. The information beforehand was perfect, I was not badgered but I was given all the information I needed for trip and felt I could contact people with questions whenever. I would recommend it to friends and would definitely visit the area again.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

For me the exciting part for me was visiting a region of Spain I have never been to and seeing how the local population went about their normal life.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to enjoy the days walking and learning. It is a fast pace sensibly mixed with times for yourself to experience village life.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It certainly did, in my opinion. I stayed with a local farmer who had the perfect place to stay. Lovely welcome, lovely breakfasts. In the evenings I mixed with the locals in bars where I ate. My guide was knowledgeable and showed me places and locations I couldn’t imagine I would ever find myself. We were able to try oval produce in remote villages and purchase their cheeses.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good value. Excellent and welcoming teachers and a guide who was extremely knowledgeable and took a pride in his location and work.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I really enjoyed the week in Picos de Europa, because it probably would not have been an area that I would have thought to go to, without the opportunity that the tour operator provided, by balancing the days with morning Spanish classes and afternoon walks in the beautiful countryside. Ana and Celina make the classes interesting and fun.....and our walking guides, Jesús, Guillermo and Jorge continued to keep us interested and active. And although there’s really not much going on in Panes, by the end of the day, we were happy not to have to much going on!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Try to allow yourself some time to walk the Cares River Gorge....24 km (if you go all the way in and back) and just a magnificent sight! Also, visiting some of the other little towns in the area was great.....particularly the town of Comillas that has one of Guadi’s unusual architectural homes. Also, Santillana del Mar, and Santander if time allows. The week of study/walking in Panes doesn’t allow the time for these small excursions. Other tips...if you are a beginner, start learning a little bit on your own before you go....online, or through books....it’s good to have a little bit of knowledge and some vocabulary under your belt before you go.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Local people in Panes certainly would benefit in the summer months.....I’m not so sure how much they benefited from our small group at the end of September. The town is VERY quiet, so other than a little bit of grocery shopping, a few restaurant meals, and a few more hotel guests occupying rooms, there wasn’t too much going on.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I loved the experience, and I would highly recommend this tour operator. Muchos graciás.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

the wonderful scenery

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

You could be the only student on the course. Be aware the level taught for you could be too basic for your requirements. The walking aspect will depend on the level of fitness of the other students.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes as stayed with local people and ate in local bars, restaurants

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I was very disappointed with the level of Spanish. There were 3 students in our group. Two of us from day one expressed our views. It was not until day 4 these were taken into account. Good help with my poor pronunciation in classes when they were taken by school owner. Before booking I had tried to find out details about the walking as due to asthma my uphill pace is slow. I was given very vague answers that it all depended on group. The other two students were very fit capable walkers so apart from one walk I opted to do my own thing using the transport to the start of the walk and take usually a there and back walk which was fine. I have attended other Spanish holiday courses and never been unhappy with the course and the Local family stay accommodation was very enjoyable.

Read the operator's response here:

Hola Christine, Thank you for taking the time to write a review and so sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the level of Spanish learning on our course. We pride ourselves on the great positive feedback we have had to date and take all critique seriously. Some students who have been studying for a while can find it frustrating not being able to progress at a particular pace. Because our courses have been created to use a communicative approach we are not keen on covering more complex grammar until we feel students have a good command of the basics. As you know, we ask all our students to take a level test before they start the course (in most cases even before they book) and you were placed in a group with students whom we believed to be of a similar level to yourself. With regards to the walking activities, it feels a little unfair that you say you were given vague answers. During our chats/in our emails, we advised you about the elevation gain and that it could be anything from 50 to 700m. I recall from our email communications that when you asked if you could get a refund if you found the walks too hard, you were told you could. A refund was offered, as promised, after the first walk, which you rejected. As I am sure you understand, it is impossible for us to assess someone’s level of fitness before they start walking. We have had 72-year-olds who left us behind in the hills and 30-year-olds who have found the walking in the area too hard for their taste! I also feel that we acted fairly in offering you the refund you requested. We’re glad you enjoyed some aspects of the trip such as the wonderful Picos de Europa scenery, your family stay and especially that you feel your stay had a positive impact on the local economy. Wishing you all the best, Ana

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

This experience provided a very well structured and fun language course provided by the language school, combined with a week of varied outdoor adventures with a superb guide and in a spectacular setting. This provided a great combination. The icing on the cake was provided by the three other solo travellers whom I met and who helped to make the week one of memorable laughter.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Just book it!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. In addition to the language school and adventure outfit, we stayed in accommodation owned and run by locals; and shopped and dined locally. The groups are small, which felt as if they were in keeping with the size of the village. Apart from the use of a van to make the generally short drive to where the outdoor activity was located, environmental impacts were minimal.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

5 star - both the language school and activity centre were committed to providing an excellent experience. I will go back!

Lots of laughs learning a new language in the morning, stunning scenery for walking, and the challenge of staying upright while canoeing in the afternoon.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure you bring a small dictionary and good footwear as well as a sense of humour.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It certainly brought trade to the town's hotels and restaurants and probably benefited some local suppliers of food.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

An excellent combination of good-humoured intellectual stimulus and physical outdoor activity in a beautiful area.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Wonderful hikes through stunning scenery in the afternoons - guides were great.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Very easy to travel on your own - you will meet like minded people and have many opportunities to practice your Spanish - not much English spoken in Panes!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes- we all stayed in local small hotel or with local families. We ate out locally in small family bars/restaurants- no multinationals here

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very friendly language school - well pitched to our abilities. I enjoyed watching short films and music videos- 4 hrs Spanish every morning seems daunting but the time passed really quickly. The hiking was challenging - you do need to be fit- but you get to see some spectacular scenery, whilst practicing Spanish at the same time .

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Travelling alone and being welcomed into a group of like-minded travellers.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Go for it! Do research travel options before committing, it is not the easiest place to access by air (but that adds to the charm).

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The holiday supported local businesses in Panes, which is heavily dependent on a short tourist season.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent, exceeded all expectations.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The language course was really excellent, with great teachers who were very well organised and responsive to our different levels. They really made use of the town as a resource and the townspeople really helped us practice as they all knew of our tour operator and why we were there. The guided walks were lovely, quite steep but at a relaxed pace and very varied with amazing mountain scenery. Our guide Helena was easy company and happy to chat to us in Spanish but had good English too.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get the most out of it by preparing first and enjoy your group! We enjoyed eating lunch and usuallydinner too together in a variety of bars and restaurants and didn't talk English all of the time!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes very much, as we stayed in local hotels or other families and ate out in several different venues as well as buying everyday items and souvenirs. The partnership between the school, activity centres and hotels/ hosts is clearly working well and it felt like everyone was keen to make our stay successful so gave us every opportunity to practice.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent, don't think it could have been improved upon.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The combination of being active with amazing walks plus the chance to learn a language.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you have no Spanish, a phrase book which helps you order food is helpful. Very little English is spoken in Panes, which is great for practising your Spanish.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We used local bars, restaurants and shops, and travelled mostly on foot!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

A very well planned week. The walks were selected for their interest and were of an appropriate level for our fitness. We were shown some varied and wonderful parts of the Picos de Europa. The Spanish course was designed so that we learned whilst enjoying ourselves; the materials were well researched, always held our attention for the 4 hours of lessons and progressed our Spanish to the next level.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for a very full week. Embrace it.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We stayed with a local family and this enhanced our week considerably. The family was both welcoming and encouraging and shared many of the local sayings and customs with us. The meals we shared with them were excellent.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Superb. We have been back for two weeks and are still talking to others about how wonderful it was. It was well organised from beginning to end and we were given a lot of advice / help by the owners / staff before we arrived.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Excellent small group Spanish tuition in the mornings, followed by walking and other explorations in the afternoons, with a local guide - a really good combination, all located in a village on the northern edge of the Picos de Europa, between the mountains and the coast - equally scenic in their different ways.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

A nice combination of Spanish classes (carefully tailored to the level of the guests) and holiday activities during the day, followed by good Spanish food and wine in the evening.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

In our small group, three people stayed in village hotels, one was brave enough to stay with a local family, and we had local tutors and a local guide, so we were helping the village economy right at the end of the tourist season.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A long bus ride from Bilbao, but the combination of the opportunity to practise Spanish, lovely scenery, a typical (not very touristy) Spanish village and a group that got on well made the week both enjoyable and worthwhile.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We enjoyed the teachers at the Spanish school. They made the lessons fun with a lot of basic, practical and helpful information. They were also very open to assistance to problems or questions regarding outside of class situations. The hiking trips amongst beautiful and breathtaking scenery were also very exciting and enjoyable.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It helps if you are in good physical condition to get the most out of the hiking trips.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, in as much as one can these days.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We were very satisfied with our stay in Panas and the surrounding area. However, it would be good if it stays out of the limelight in order not to be overrun with tourists.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The fantastic scenery, plus the new friends made.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

No need to buy a dictionary. Do ask about smoking in the house if you plan to stay with a family. I recommend Hotel Covadonga---where you feel part of the local community--but take earplugs so you are not woken up by the noisy plumbing. You need to be a confident walker to take full advantage of the walks.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We used local resturants for dinner and bought local souvenirs so money going into the economy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

9 out of 10. It provided just what it said on the tin---great language teaching, and good exercise with the guided walks. I made enormous progress on the language front but the walks could have been a bit more demanding---one of the group didn't cope well with the walks so held us back.

review 12 Jun 2016

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

This holiday had two parts to it: learning Spanish in the mornings and walking in the afternoons. Both of these were equally excellent. The lessons were extremely professional, pitched at the right level and took account of the different learning styles within the group of four attendees. The trainers were engaging and stimulating. I shall go away to pursue this language further. The walking was absolutely wonderful, which means that the location was superb. We walked from 3.30 to 6.30 pm each day with a break on the middle day to give our legs a rest. The Guide chose walks that were varied in location and degree of difficulty. He was a trained mountain rescue man so we felt extremely safe. We walked high, and low along the coast, and through valleys and gorges. By the end of the week we were famous in the village - we enjoyed a Vino Tinto or beer in the evenings. A beautiful place.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Come prepared for walking - and do walk when you get there. You'll be fit after two days, but make sure you bring walking poles. In fact make sure you read everything the company forwards to you in the information package. I am 70 and none of the walks was too difficult for me. The scenery was amazing and we walked a small part of the Northern coastal Camino walk. It has certainly whet my appetite to visit that area again.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We brought increased custom to the local restaurants, the Hotels and the small supermarket in Panes. The walking was certainly within the context of preserving the environment - we walked in the National Park as well as through farmland and villages and our guide was eager to explain how the environment is being protected, or not in some instances.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Overall this holiday was much better than I had expected. Staying in one place for a week was sublime and gave us a chance to develop our Spanish through interacting with the local people who spoke no English. It was also helped by the fact that our group of 4 women got along extremely well. I'm not reborn but this holiday comes equal first with another I had this year - both were intent on giving us a genuine experience of village life.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole holiday was memorable. The language school was situated in a lovely small town. The school was light and airy and the lessons flew by! The teaching was excellent. Great games! Four varied hikes in the afternoons with great views. Lovely group of people doing the lessons and hikes.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We enjoyed staying in a self catering apartment at Las Bardenillas. This was a 10-15 minute walk from the language school. We bought our bread and supplies in the local shops each day and then headed back to our spacious apartment for a couple of hours before we headed out hiking! We liked the restaurant at the end of our road, La Cortina. (This was just over the main bridge on the opposite side of the river to Panes.) Canoeing on our final afternoon was great fun....very peaceful and great views. (We were driven up river and then canoed back to Panes.)

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Certainly. We walked everywhere (!) and supported the local economy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. Without any narrative, we would have given the holiday 5 stars. With the narrative, ie great memories and would not hesitate to recommend to friends, we give it 4 stars.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Meeting new friends

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Because this holiday is based in a rural part of Spain that is not an area where you will encounter many non Spanish tourists, you are unlikely to meet any English speaking people in the bars and hotels. If you are travelling alone and, as yet, have no Spanish, your arrival may be a little daunting. This also applies to the locals when they meet you for the first time. Do not be put off! Your eagerness to learn a new language is appreciated and by the end of your holiday even if your communication level is still difficult, your enthusiasm for learning the language will have been given a real shot in the arm!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It benefitted local people as any tourist income would.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Our mornings at the school with Ana and Inigo seemed to fly by. It is very well organised and the facilities are first class. My Spanish has improved noticeably. The choice of afternoon walks was interesting and varied and our professional guide tailored them to suit our ability. We had relaxed and enjoyable conversation along the way.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to take things as you find them, relax and enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere of the town. The people here are so friendly, and you should try and engage with them as much as possible to add to your experience. It is also important to bring the proper basics for walking, boots, pole, rainproof jacket etc. as per Ana's list.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The area around Panes is beautiful and unspoilt. Small scale holidays such as this are an ideal compromise as they do not have an adverse effect on the environment, while benefitting the local economy. Everyone, the school, walking guides, hotel, restaurants, taxis, shops, do their utmost to ensure visitors have a pleasant stay.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

All in all, it was a very good experience, and we would be pleased to return at any time, and indeed hope to do so in the future.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Picos scenery is really stunning. Panes village is very traditional. The tutors and walking guide all friendly, very competent and helpful. Hotel Covadonga clean and friendly with enormous and lovely traditional breakfast.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

In Panes virtually no one speaks any English. Meals are huge, biased towards meat choices and menus are mostly only in Spanish, some places don't offer a menu. Dinner starts at 8pm, not before. Potes, 25km away, has a lot more choice, menus and English so it's easier to find something to eat, especially if, like me, you're there alone. Hire a car. It gives you so much more flexibility to explore this stunning area.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, everyone I dealt with was local.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent holiday!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

1. The walks were good and varied. Some amazing scenery. 2. Finally managed to speak a bit of Spanish (not really part of my OU Spanish course) and found the lessons useful; friendly & good teachers. It was sunny every day, so I was very lucky.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The walks can be adapted to your wishes and abilities, as can the Spanish of course. Take a travel kettle if you need cups of tea!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, supported the school, walking guide, taxi company and local shops/hotel & restaurants.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Good holiday. I took the language lessons quite seriously and spent a extra few hours each day 'revising'. All balanced by some great walks (and a pilates lesson). My hotel was perfectly adequate but the staff weren't friendly, but there is a choice of hotels. This is a good choice if you want to combine some learning and some activity in a lovely part of Spain.

review 8 Apr 2015

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Walking the Ruta del Cares. This 1000m high ravine with the river flowing through the bottom is one of the most spectacular places I have ever seen. Not easy to photograph as the scale is so vast! The guides were brilliant - very knowledgeable and helpful.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The walking is spectacular but if, like me, you are only used to relatively level walks it would probably be a good idea to get some practice on hills beforehand! The Spanish tuition was great - tailored exactly to our level.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Panes has lost many of its generation of young people. Those remaining are working very hard to sustain local traditions and preserve their lovely old environment for the future. Tourism provides a major source of income and therefore greatly benefits local people. It also encourages maintenance of the many local items of historical interest (e.g. a church dating back to 1100AD), the local Arboretum and the propagation of knowledge through information boards and the Internet. Walking facilities are improving all the time with gradual opening up of new, spectacular routes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Four hours of Spanish tuition followed by 4-5 hours of walking in the mountains is not exactly restful but it is hugely enjoyable and one of the best holidays I have ever had. It was nice to have a couple of more relaxing days there at the end as well.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was a really well-balanced mixture of lessons in the morning and walking in the afternoon. I loved all of the walks - each very different to the other. The lessons were worked around us and our needs. Nothing was too much trouble and everybody wanted us to have a great holiday - everybody went above and beyond to help us.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you want to learn Spanish, go on some great hikes and be truly immersed in Spanish all week (both in school and in the local community) - then book it without hesitation! If you want the city atmosphere or you are a 100% sun seeker, then keep looking!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, everybody who worked directly at the school was locally hired. We were in a small village, so every time we went to a restaurant or shops etc. we benefitted the local economy. The walks were well planned and environmentally conscious.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic - just what I needed!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Everything was local. Used small family run hotel, a local taxi service and a local (and very knowledgeable) mountain guide. Recycling and environmental awareness was encouraged.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We came back mentally and physically tired, but feeling that we had done something positive.
