1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The views and the camaraderie of the group.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for some steep climbs!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Not really. While we did stop for a drink in a couple of refuges, I feel we could have made more use of them and of local restaurants.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Good but quite tough compared with other Grade 3 trips from this operator.

Read the operator's response here:

Thank you for your review, Frances, and we're pleased to hear you had an enjoyable trip to the Alps with us. We do find that, on balance, Mont Blanc Highlights is a Grade 3 (Moderate) trip, though we mention in the trip notes that customers without hill walking experience may find it a little more difficult. We will certainly continue to monitor the feedback we receive about the trip, though, should a number of our clients feel that the trip should be graded higher.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Watching vultures swooping overhead as they moved over a ridge between valleys.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Have light synthetic clothing and waterproofs in order to cope with the large range of alpine weather.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes - being in a group (especially eating and minibus transport) plus using the free public transport, etc, was so easy to access.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A great break with very well managed walks.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Meeting and enjoying wonderful people. Really enjoyed the accommodations and food at the chalet.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Hiking was more rigorous than I thought. Leader went too fast. Didn’t allow enough time for pics and realizing it wasn’t how much territory new covered in the least amount of time!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A ten. Loved it Except for the bike guide. He was distant. Removed not able to communicate well. Pacing was poor.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing the Alps for the first time

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be in reasonable shape. All the hikes are steep uphill and steep downhill.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We used the local bus and train for transportation which decreased the environmental impact

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The trip was good but I am negatively influenced by the unacceptable room my daughter and her friend got. It was a closet with a ceiling window which offered no air circulation, you have to close it if it rains and then the room would become suffocatingly hot and claustrophobic . To add insult to the injury they were both charged the same amount as the people who got the normal size rooms with balcony, multiple windows and view of Mont Blanc.

review 16 Aug 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The scenery

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If in Chamonix/ Mont Blanc, do a self guided tour, not an operator guided tour.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Only by bringing $ to a tourist area. Nothing regarding environmental impact or conservation except re-using lunch boxes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We were disappointed. The tour leader appeared disinterested and either lacked knowledge of the area or was a poor communicator or both. The chalet hosts were authoritarian and treated the clients like school children.

Read the operator's response here:

We would like to thank Warwick for his feedback, although, we were very sorry to read that he was unhappy with the tour’s leadership and chalet staff. Jenny, the tour leader, is an extremely qualified International Mountain Leader and has received very positive feedback over the past three summers that she has worked for us. Sarah and Rich, the chalet hosts, have been with us for the past three years, and their feedback has also been overwhelmingly positive during this time with many describing their food as the highlight of the holiday. We are committed to responsible travel and use local supplies where possible in the chalet, as well as encouraging groups to use local cafes and refuges to boost the local economy. Additionally, our tour leaders ensure that they stick to the correct trails to avoid any potential damage to the landscape. We nonetheless remain sorry that Warwick felt that improvements could have been made to the holiday.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The views of Mt Blanc were amazing, especially when taking the Cable Car to the very top of the Glaciers. For my wife, this was her first experience of a 'Chalet' holiday and she found the food and atmosphere wonderful.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The terrain for the walks is very very rough (rocks). You really must have proper mountain walking boots. My high class 'Hokka' trail running shoes were completely 'finished' after the week.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Hard to answer.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely wonderful. The Chalet staff and the mountain guides were first class.

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Michael, Firstly, thank you for your comments, we are delighted that overall you had a great trip. We’d like to give you a little more information regarding your comments in question 3. As we’re sure you’re aware few holidays have as little detrimental impact on the environment and local residents as a walking and trekking trip. Erosion on and adjacent to popular paths is a growing problem in certain places and therefore our trip leaders encourage clients to stick to advised routes in order to minimise this. We do believe in leaving no more than footprints and have a strict policy with proper disposal of litter. We understand that this sense of responsibility is even more necessary in the case of Mont Blanc than some other trekking sites as the mountain does not have National Park status and regulations to protect it. Our staff are trained with environmental stewardship in mind and protective guidelines are then passed on to our clients through briefings in order to keep our impact neutral. Where meals are provided, we try to use local supplies if possible and encourage clients to do the same when they shop independently: for example, there is a Saturday market in Chamonix with plenty of local shops and cafes en route which we hope you got to visit. When eating out, we use family run business that benefit the local community by keeping investment in the area. We stop almost daily in locally run refuges where our trekkers usually have a coffee and a big slice of cake. It does not sound like much but these are all locally owned establishments and our business is an excellent source of income for them. Water is a really important issue with trekking trips- especially as this trip reaches at altitude of over 2,500m at the highest pass of the route, Lac Blanc, which might be quite challenging. Whilst we must stay hydrated, it is also vital that we have a system for providing clean water without causing lots of waste with plastic bottles. We suggest that instead of repeatedly buying bottled water, guests should use fresh water springs on the way to re-fill a singular container. These springs are clean and are a wonderful resource for reducing plastic waste, or guests can simply re-fill at the campsites, mountain huts or village inns where they stay. We do hope that this explanation provides an adequate response to your review and offers you reassurance that we are continuously working on ensuring our trips are as responsible as possible. We hope to welcome you back to France one day.
