The most memorable part of the holiday was... Camping by the Darvasa gas crater, the off-road drive to the Gonur Depe archaeological site or the wacky city of Ashgabat (more)David Finbow
The hospitable and very friendly people wherever we went - smiling faces all the way. Also the sheer vastness of Kyrgyzstan, which I loved - the dramatic mountain passes, the shepherds bringing their animals down from the high pastures. (more)Sara Warren

Memorable parts? Walking in the Kyrgyz mountains. Tips? Be prepared to be flexible, pack light. Local benefits? Interaction with local people was good. Difficult to evaluate environmental impact. Use of personal water bottles is a good idea, but drinking water is mainly supplied in single use plastic bottles. Conservation is probably supported only by the fact that as tourists you bring much needed dollars into the country. Overall rating? Very good, a great way ... (more)Ges Payne

Supported local people by visiting areas of the normal tourist route and therefore putting money into their pockets Overall ... (more)Lynda Perkins

Memorable parts? The gas crater was superb. Really had the "wow" factor. The yurt camp at Darwasa was lovely. Tips? To tell people at home that they might not hear from you because a lot of internet is blocked and sometimes Impossible to make international calls! Also a lot of time is spent driving because the places of interest are so wide apart. Local benefits? Maybe the villages benefited by us coming because I assume they were paid something. We drove long distances ... (more)Paula Evans

Memorable parts? There were quite a few highlights in Turkmenistan: the dinosaur trail near Afghanistan, the fire crater, the old ruins of Merv, Konya Urgench, and more. One day we were passing through a town and saw that there was a wedding. Everyone was so happy and wanted us to be happy with them and join in - so we did. Ashgabat itself is weird. The scale of the city is huge, not people-scaled at all. I don't think that there was any urban planning involved, just large avenues with ... (more)Jacqui Licht
