review 28 Oct 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Seeing the varied landscape of the Algarve we would not normally see.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get an e-bike. I used a hybrid bike , however given the heat and the fact a hill was never far away, it would have been better using an e-bike like my partner, who was able to glide up the hills and enjoy the countryside.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, we were able to eat at local restaurants and stay at locally owned and run accommodation, all of which were good quality. Given it was a cycling holiday, it had low impact on environment (apart from our flights to the Algarve).

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very enjoyable holiday with excellent support and instructions from Bert.

review 17 Oct 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Enjoyed riding on empty roads through back country. Loved the poolside luxury and beautifully curated surroundings at Quinta da Luz. Getting to know the Carrapateira dune country was fascinating.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get used to riding up hills before you go. Also, there is no shame in an electric bike (!) - one of us converted halfway through and found a whole new sense of ease in the riding days - no fear of hills, no limits!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes we ate and slept locally.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very satisfying varied holiday taking us to locations we would never otherwise have visited. The routes have been carefully and brilliantly chosen by Bert and the instructions were excellent. Bert was supportive and flexible.

review 20 Sep 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Being outdoors for 7 days, cycling through wonderful scenery ranging from urban to rustic, over pine and cork tree covered hills ,across orange and lemon laden plains to rugged ,cliff-lined coasts and dazzling white beaches. It was fabulous

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We used mobile phone app Komoot with gpx files supplied by Bert, along with his excellent printed route notes. We think Komoot or similar would be very helpful for anyone doing this tour (or any other tour). We both hired ebikes without which we would have struggled with some of the lengthy ascents.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was a lovely holiday along a route diligently annotated by Bert. We had a great time.

review 20 May 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The different types of accommodation that Bert had arranged. It was quite exciting to find the new place, after a great days cycling. Also the notes that Bert had prepared were "quirky", so it was a real thrill to find the "next turn".

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

You don't need as many clothes as you think !

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We were cycling, so virtually zero impact on the environment, we ate in local restaurants drank in local bars, so it was certainly benefiting the local traders

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. Well planned & ran smoothly from start to finish.

review 3 May 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We have lots of memorable moments on this wonderful holiday. Cycling through orange groves, along very quiet country lanes, hill climbs, sparkling sea views, wonderful accommodation and some great restaurants.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The route is very varied and includes some wonderful hilly roads. We hired e bikes which meant we could really enjoy the countryside. Take your time cycling through wonderful scenery. The route instructions are very clear and include recommended cafes. Downloading the GPX files meant we could see a map of the route as well as checking our position.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. The holiday supported local businesses. The tour operator is run by Bert who lives and knows the area. We stayed in some lovely small hotels and guest houses. Bert recommended some lovely local restaurants.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This holiday gets a five star recommendation from us. Bert was very easy to communicate with before and during the holiday. He lives locally which meant he was on hand when we had a problem with one of our bikes, everything was resolved very quickly and efficiently. The route was extremely well researched and goes through some lovely very quiet parts of the Algarve. All in all an excellent holiday.

review 2 Apr 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Beautiful hillsides, soaked in sunshine and smelling of orange blossom.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We came in March, which we were worried might be too early in the year, but turned out to be an excellent time of year to visit. Lots of spring flowers and the weather was very pleasant. Also, the gpx files of the routes that were provided were very useful, would recommend these to others.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. The cycle route had clearly been put together by someone local, as it was beautiful and avoided busy roads. Lots of local business recommendations alongside which also felt supportive to local communities.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very highly. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for an active holiday.

review 5 Nov 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We went early October and had a lovely sunny week. No where was too busy, quite roads and a great variety of scenery. Through small historical towns like Silves, villages, farmland and coastal scenery. You see so much more on a bike! I think the best thing was the variety of scenery. A very well put together cycling trip by Bert.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It is quite hilly but that means a lot of downhill too. We really enjoyed using the ebikes for the first time. It meant we had no problems on the hills. You have plenty of time to reach your destination each day which gives lots of options for arriving early or stopping off somewhere for lunch on the way. The roads were quiet so traffic was never a problem. We stayed an extra night in Lagos and went on a kayaking trip around the coast which made a lovely end to the holiday.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Apart from initial flights in definitely.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent holiday. Bert’s directions were spot on - he obviously has cycled the routes many times! The route was lovely and varied in terms of landscape. Bikes were excellent and Bert was very attentive in getting the sizes right for us. Very well researched!

review 23 Oct 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The amazing scenery, towns, people, changes in the environment from beaches to vineyards in one day. Accommodation was excellent with helpful people at the end of a long day heading is towards the pool for a swim! Bert is amazing - knowledgeable- helpful - responsive - freely provides loads of advice on making the most our tour.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Always accept any hotel upgrades as ours in Carrapetiera was one of the most memorable places of our trip ! If you have any doubts just book a trip with Bert - take his recommendations and go for it!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely - you can’t beat a week on a Bike - eating and drinking local food and wines.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Brilliant. One of the best holidays we’ve ever had. We will be booking with Bert again :)

review 12 Sep 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

A memorable experience for me was cycling through citrus groves, pulling over and picking and eating a ripe orange from the tree, delicious!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bert picks great accommodation but none are too formal, so no need to overpack on clothes, you'll only be unpacking/packing them every day!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

As a bike ride through rural, sparsely populated areas, yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A great holiday, not overpriced, with well maintained equipment, great accommodation and an excellent, varied route. I'd go again.

review 15 Jul 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The most memorable part of our holiday was biking through the beautiful orange and lemon groves and mountains. It was so nice to slow down our travel - smell and hear the sounds of the landscape and stop by the local cafes and bars along the way.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Pack light, bring sunscreen, definitely take your time and stop along the way.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

One of the best holidays we’ve had.

review 30 Jun 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Leaving Caldas Montique after the climb the day before from Silves and then bicycling along the ridge. Enjoying the hot springs and being poolside at Kristin’s after a hot day in the saddle. Just being on Bert’s bikes was great.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get a detailed map. Bert’s directions are very specific it the maps he provided are not as easy to follow. Don’t expect an easy ride on any day. It is hilly. But it is so worth every pedal. Check the weather. If it is going to be hot, leave early and skip the breakfast.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely! All the places we stayed were smaller. The places we ate that was recommended were local, small, and wonderful.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Five star. Bert paid attention to every detail and had a genuine concern for our comfort and safety on each stage of our journey. His communication with us was timely and clear. My wife and I had a fantastic time and most memorable experience. We could not dream of anything better.

review 19 Apr 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Of the seven or eight cycling holidays we have been on, this rates as one of the very best. Every day took us through different terrain and scenery. Going in April meant the wild flowers were in abundance and we will always associate the strong scent of orange blossom with this trip. It's difficult to pick out any one memorable highlight, although our extended stay at the boutique hotel in Carrapateira was particularly welcome.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

There are some long climbs so you need to be relatively fit; some of our party had electric bikes which made it more manageable. If you can, stay an extra night in Carrapateira. The coastal scenery is stunning and there are several local restaurants within an easy walk of the hotel.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes in that we stayed in local hotels and ate in smaller, family-run restaurants.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic, and well worth the effort.

review 12 Mar 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Beautiful views whilst cycling through the mountains in inland Portugal

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We travelled in early March, with pleasant weather and only one day of rain. Quieter than the usual tourist months. Moderate difficulty cycling.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Supported a majority of local businesses, including accommodation and food. Carbon footprint reduced by cycling to various points of interest.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great communication with Bert throughout, with good quality bikes and ample cycling equipment provided. Detailed and easy to follow route instructions. Cycling was varied and interesting, navigating around many of the highlights of the Algarve. Accommodation comfortable and welcoming. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the trip to others.

review 4 Oct 2021

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Every days cycling was memorable but I guess what will stay in the mind longest will be arriving at Cabo de Sao Vicente the most south westerly point of mainland Europe and looking over the sea battered cliffs at the Atlantic ocean.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Add an additional night in Silves, as we did, to do the optional cycle ride and explore the town its castle and cathedral. Spend some time in Sao Bartolomeu de Messines to wander the backstreets of the old town, it's too easy to circle straight through, but is worth the extra 30 minutes to wander the cobbled streets. Upgrade the stay in Carrapateira to stay at the Casa Fajara with its outdoor pool, tennis court, gorgeous gardens and fantastic breakfasts. Even add another night here if you have the time, you won't regret it. Consider lunch stops, will they be open, you don't know so good to have some snacks on the bike most days just in case.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The trip is run by a local company based in Alte, your second night stop. We drunk plenty of Portuguese beer and wine, which is greatly underrated and ate enough olives to support the growers in each town we passed through, they were so fresh I am sure they had still been on the tree the day before.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This is a great trip into the inner Algarve, away from the crowds you get to ride some great routes, some challenging but worth the effort. You get to see the white washed houses and cobbled streets of the hill towns and the sea of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. All the accommodation is great and the support provided by the local company is of a quality you never get from the larger cycle tour companies. We would highly recommend.

review 20 Sep 2020

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We really enjoyed the quiet roads, interesting, unspoilt towns and villages and the excellent characterful accommodation on this tour. Bert provided an excellent service, and came out very quickly when there was a mechanical issue with my bike to sort it out. The bikes were very good by the way, and well maintained. He was very helpful and flexible with everything.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Its quite a hilly tour, so check that the daily ascent is right for you beforehand.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes by staying in mainly small, locally run accommodation and eating at local restaurants we felt we were helping the local economy

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Lovely holiday exploring the less visited parts of inland Algarve and the west coast

review 15 Mar 2020

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The routes through the quiet country side, especially the West coast. The hotels were lovely.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get some cycle training done before you go, the routes are a nice mix of up and down and flat.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We stayed in local hotels and ate out in small cafes and restaurants

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

There is nice variety in the holiday. We were a group of thirteen, a couple choose electric bikes and some did the extended version of the daily cycle. We also spent 2 days in 2 different places, do that offered people a rest day or a change of activity. Bert was very quick to reply to any emails and organised with great attention to detail.

review 12 Nov 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Bert gave us a most varied route which gave wonderful views and varied terrain. His route instructions were spot on. We were on the Terra de Caldas tour.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Go for it! The bikes we had were fully capable of the route.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

As we ate locally each evening(restaurant recommendations were very good) we did benefit the local community. As we used no fossil fuel we must have benefitted the environment just a little

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent - and a lovely insight into the Algarve region .Berts route kept us away from the concrete jungles of the resorts which we were grateful for.

review 30 Oct 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Approaching picturesque towns from a distance after several hours of winding our way through small roads and alongside orchards.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take your time to explore the little towns markets ect, you will have enough time to cycle between destinations so don’t hurry.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely. We pedaled, eat and shopped local and left very little environmental footprint.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Wonderful, although you have to have a little stamina to cycle for most of a week straight even with ebike option.

review 14 Oct 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We chose the Terra de Caldas tour for our cycling holiday. The peace and tranquility of cycling through the countryside and stopping off in small village cafes for a coffee and snack was one of the most pleasurable aspects of our trip, but there were so many other highlights too – Walking though the historic streets of Silves at night, relaxing in the Spa in Caldas de Monchique, an exhilarating downhill section of the Caldas de Monchique to Aljezur route (that seemed to last forever !!), the view from the Muslim fortification in Aljezur which was breath taking and the sound of the crashing waves at Bordeira Beach in Carrapateira – fantastic ! The accommodation that Bert arranged for us differed from location to location, with each place having its own unique charm and character. The Portuguese people were so friendly.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Setting off early (around 8am) each day is advisable, especially if the forecast is for high temperatures as you can get a good few kilometres under your belt before it gets too warm - It also allows you to reach your destination hotel in good time each day allowing time to unwind and have dinner without being too rushed. Be sure to carry plenty of water and snacks in your backpack as we found some cafes in the smaller towns / villages did not open before 11 am on one of the days. We decided to break the trip up by spending 3 nights in Carrapateria rather than an extra night at the start and finish of the trip - We found that this gave the trip a nice balance as it allowed us time to walk the cliff trails and enjoy the beaches, which were stunning. Sampling the Piri Piri chicken at the Café Imperio in Monchique is a must !!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, by visiting small rural cafes we felt we were helping contribute to small communities. By cycling through the villages it felt less intrusive than if we were to do so by car – we also felt that we could appreciate the villages more by cycling through them.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Cannot rate this holiday highly enough. Berts organisation was fantastic – the instructions for each route were detailed and clear, the bikes provided were excellent, our luggage was transferred from point to point without a hitch and the recommendations for cafes / restaurants did not disappoint. A wonderful trip from start to finish – thanks Bert !

review 8 Jul 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

At the end of a day riding, arriving at accommodation which far exceeded our expectations, both in terms of the standard of accommodation and its location.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We were a group of 60/70 yr olds but were bike fit. We decided to hire e/bikes and were glad we did as stages of this tour are quite hilly and would be challenging for unfit riders not on E/bikes. Bert, who runs the tour was very helpful and responsive during both the booking process and the ride itself. We had absolutely no problems at any stage of our ride.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Hard to tell but we guess that our trip would have certainly benefitted economically some of the small poorer rural areas we rode through. We were environmentally conscious of not leaving a footprint during our travels.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very Good! Was well organised with a good variety of Terrain from orange and olive groves, up through foothills forests and back down to beautiful beaches. Generally on quite country roads and optional short rides available after reaching our destination each day. Great value for money.

review 11 Jun 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The fun of biking in Portugal. How beautiful and unspoilt the countryside was...the wildflowers everywhere. Clear blue skies everyday in early May. The organisation of our trip was first class. Bert had thought about everything - he anticipated our needs and had the bases covered. Our bikes were dependable and we didn't have any trouble at all. We had decided on electric bikes and they were new to us...fantastic and easy to manage! We still peddled all day (40-50 km) but we weren't exhausted at the end of the day.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Go with a company such as Bert's. He booked excellent accommodations for us that exceeded our expectations - there was always a lovely pool and very generous breakfasts. We always found good places for lunch and dinner.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, all of the above - because it was local people looking after all the accommodations - except perhaps one but the couple who ran the B&B were very much part of the community. We found the staff to be gracious and helpful everywhere we stayed.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Unreserved 5 stars.

review 4 Jun 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

In our experience these are the most important criteria for a successful bike tour (in this order): Easy to book, with informative, prompt, and reliable booking agent/tour operator; reasonable cost for the product. Bikes in good repair - including bike seats, handle grips, gears, panniers. Good route & route directions. Luggage transfer to next accommodation. Comfortable accommodation - with hosts that are welcoming, knowledgeable about the local area, and provide good coffee and breakfasts. This tour was successful on all levels. The written route directions we used could have been written a bit more concisely (in point form in a table format, rather than paragraphs), so that we could more easily read information while riding - but all directions were very accurate.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

May was an incredible month to travel through this area of Portugal - everything was in bloom, the temperatures were reasonable, there was not a lot of tourist traffic, and the local people were helpful and very friendly.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Traveling by bike is environmentally friendly. The tour operator used locally owned hotels or homes for accommocation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This holiday met and surpassed our expectations. Thank you!

review 31 May 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The electric bikes were an incredible luxury and good quality. They allowed us to enjoy the mountains. The roads were quiet and the distances each day were just right for us. The smells of eucalyptus and orange groves were memorable. The accommodations were very good too. The walk at Carrapateira was something we will never forget. The accommodation at Lagos was the icing on the cake.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take good walking shoes for the hikes along the cliff tops. It might be worthwhile to take your own bicycle seat for your comfort.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The walk at Carrapateira was spectacular and showed how the local people are preserving that environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.

review 10 Mar 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The overall relaxed feeling I got each day. Bert's superb organisation Great routes, Superb over night stops, cafe suggestions meant the rider only had to cycle through orange groves and seemingly natural countryside between delightful white villages. Being out of season the roads were empty and the hotels quiet

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

book it Even at this time February March the weather was warm enough for cycling Even during the rain it was a cooling shower.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Cycling is environmentally friendly and I carried all my own luggage, I used local cafes for my breaks and obviously local restaurants along with local hotels and B&Bs at night Going so early in the year can only have helped the local economy

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Cycling alone I was completely my own master, the distances were within my capabilites even with some of the longer options So I found it one of the most relaxing holidays I have had.

review 7 Oct 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Arriving at beautiful beaches

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Just know you won't be biking on bike paths, but on back roads, mostly, with minimal traffic. Occasionally a bigger highway, but not for long

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Loved riding through villages and winding through the Algarve on back roads. Wonderful bike trip on great bikes, well maintained and really interesting routes

review 5 Jun 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

When you are on a bike you always wonder what adventure is just around the corner. Caldas de Monchique was a lovely surprise nestled in the trees. Spring was an amazing time of year because of all flowers lining the roadsides, and the temperatures were perfect. We loved stopping and visiting with the local people.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I would highly suggest an ebike even if you are fit. You can still make the ride as challenging as you like, but for us having the choice of sailing up a steep hill while enjoying the beautiful scenery kept me in holiday mode. Also less chance of acquiring a knee issue and having to take days off of your ride because it’s very hilly. Don’t speed through, slow down and enjoy ride!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Well you are not in a motorized vehicle. Bert did a great job winding us through villages where we purchased our foods and drink.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We would highly recommend this holiday and you can’t beat the price.

review 3 Jun 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The riding was excellent on quiet picturesque roads. The spring flowers were in full bloom. The weather was perfect and the small towns and their accommodations were lovely.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take your time to really enjoy the area and don't fret about the hills. You get it all back in the end.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes....we tried to support small cafes and merchants in their mini mercados. Cycling without support vehicles is the most environmental way to go.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The holiday was excellent. Bert was really nice to work with on planning the trip. His routes are well thought out and being a small businessman he is very attentive to his clients and obviously loves the area.

review 27 May 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Having everything work like clockwork. We got up in the morning had a great breakfast and onto our bikes-all we had to do was appreciate the beautiful scenery and decide where to stop for coffee. Lunch was a picnic along the way and with nothing else to think about, it made for a very relaxing holiday. Bert’s organisation was superb. From the moment we initially contacted him months ago to the departure from Faro his attention to detail was first class.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Definitely take the trip. Being of English stock, but living in Australia we do like a cup of tea as soon as we wake up. Apparently, it is not common to have a kettle in the rooms. We would invest in a couple of plastic cups and one of those water boiling coils that you pop in the cup to boil water and some teabags. Anne highly recommends the e bike option, not a lot more money and well worth it for all those hills. Also meant that she could carry what we needed for the day without extra effort. We added an extra day, staying in Carrapateira 2 nights instead of 1. This allowed us to cycle to Cape Sao Vicente and back which we can definitely recommend.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Well, we spent eight days on pedal power, using not one litre of oil based product. We had lunches snacks and dinners at roadside cafes in villages which supported local economies.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Normally we like to do traveling on the cheap using our own resources and planning. This bike tour was carefree and provided the beautiful outdoors experience with Burt’s vast knowledge of local highlights, track conditions, best places to eat, along with some welcome luxury at the end of the day. Each days accommodation is carefully picked by Burt. The bikes were well maintained and appropriate for the conditions. Anne had an amazing E-bike to assist her up a few hills. yes, we would do this trip again!

review 21 Nov 2017

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Waking up each morning to a new adventure, and not quite knowing what was in store.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We followed the Terra de Caldas route. It is best to be prepared for some challenging cycling, and would perhaps use an ebike in future.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We felt we had supported the local economy by using cafes, restaurants and convenience stores.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We are already looking to do something similar, and have given the links to friends who have an expressed an interest.

review 2 Nov 2017

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Silves Castle and Silves itself was definitely the most memorable. And the hills. Oh my, the hills.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to work on those hills. Wear proper, breathable clothes. Accept you are unlikely to have the energy to be too touristy and give yourself a couple of days on the back end to shop, relax, etc.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, as I ate and slept in local places. Since my luggage was driven, maybe not totally environmentally neutral, but it sure felt good not to be in a car or bus!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. Each accommodation was great, the instructions each day were pretty clear (once I got used to them), and it was very empowering to conquer those hills. Most days the roads had little traffic and even when they did the motorists were very cautious.

A nicely challenging ride culminating with the views from the cliffs at Carrapateira

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for climbs! Can be tough but rewarding. Also, great stops each night.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Local food was delicious. We loved the markets, the bakeries, and the cafes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Our holiday was excellent in every regard. It was challenging and rewarding. We discovered the beauty of the Algarve region, ate too much excellent food, but worked it off in the mountains! Support from the ride organizer, Bert, was excellent.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Arriving in Carrapateria, the beaches were beautiful!! All the rides had wonderful scenery, lovely small towns to explore and the rides were challenging yet fun and gave us a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

For those travellers taking the same tour, and going to the Thermal Springs, booking ahead for any spa treatments is strongly advised. Apparently the spa is booked days in advance.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, cycling tours by nature reduce environmental impact. In any of the towns/cities we stayed in we ate in local restaurants, stopped for coffee on route in small cafes. Directions and maps were laminated for use for other tours.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We would highly recommend our tour operator. Everything ran smoothly, our luggage always arrived on time. The hotels were comfortable and accommodated any of our needs. The bicycles were in very good condition, instructions were clear and easy to understand. Any taxi or car transportation needed to trains or airport was taken care of and arrived on time. And from the beginning planning stages, Burt Smeman answered all our questions completely and promptly, it was easy and a pleasure to work with Burt.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The variable surroundings we were in on any one day. The surrounding hills of the Algarve, The beautiful rugged South and West coast. The sunset and sunrise on Salema beach. The Portuguese tarts!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take your euros with you! You can only get cash out from ATMs, not banks and sometimes at hotels. But the exchange rate was terrible . One Pound to one Euro (exchange rate was 1=1.11 at the time). Cards are not widely accepted. We did all the extra loops suggested by Bert and reached our next destination by early afternoon -so time to look around the area by foot. (we're generally fit but not big cyclists). Be prepared for some down time in Carrapateira. (Where you stay for two nights). It's a fairly quite place. The suggested cycle loop suggested included a big chunk of the cycle out on the following day so we chose not to do it. WE did enjoy a long walk on the coast (suggested in the pack) - make sure you walk along the cliffs and not just on the road as you will miss some beautiful geology! Our last stop was in Salema. (There is a choice of this or Lagos). We chose to cycle down from Carrapateira to Sagres and out to the South-West tip of Portugal (Sao Vincente) before heading on to Salema. Around 60 km and well worth it. Salema is beautiful so we would recommend aiming to arrive in time to enjoy it in the daylight. The local fish dishes are plentiful and delicious but worthy of note is that it was very easy to get Vegetarian food and even some Vegan dishes in many restaurants.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

In all apart from the last day we were in less visited areas by tourists. So by staying at their, eating in their restaurants and cafes we feel we are contributing to the locals. Of course, cycling has less of an impact than driving on the environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Bert's instructions were very clear with mileage added where decisions on routes needed to be made. The hotels and B&Bs we stayed at were very good with lovely views in most cases. There was either a swimming pool or the sea close by everywhere we stayed -a little bit chilly for us at the end of October but probably a very welcome dip at the end of a day's cycling most of the year.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole cycling trip was memorable as we got to see the real Algarve with its variety of landscapes - from mountains inland to the west and south coast - often away from the tourist hot spots. All the arranged overnight accommodation was first class particularly with the locations.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The end of Sept was a good time to go, not too hot for cycling but you can still enjoy the beach and swimming.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, it benefits local people

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

One of the best self guided cycling holidays we have been on. We were very impressed with the overall organisation by Bert and nothing seemed too much trouble. His trip notes were perfect so we did not get lost (which can be stressful). We were supplied with good quality hired bikes.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Absolutely everything!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Practice some simple travel Portuguese phrases and wear biking shorts.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Cycling through the countryside is a wonderful way to reduce your environmental impact while at the same time maximizing your experience with local flora and fauna. Everyone we encountered was so friendly and helpful.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We thank our hosts and holiday company for what has proven to be one of our most favorite vacations ever! It was truly a trip for all the senses. From the melodic birdsong, delicious cuisine, and the intoxicating scents of the blossoms to the lovely villages and people along the way- we loved it all. Thank you, Bert, for making it happen. The bikes and hotels were top quality and his suggestions for additional itineraries and restaurants were spot on. We found the directions to be explicit and easy to follow and appreciated the many routes that took us off the beaten path.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We have uesd Responsible Travel before so knew what to expect. Bert, our contact/ tour manager was very helpful and the maps and instructions given were first class. Our ride was a challenging one (translated means many hills!) but we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Cycling through and seeing the normal, everyday parts of the country gives you a feel of the real Portugal and not the flashy, tourist hotspots. Hotels were good, food was good, everything was how we wanted it and what we expected.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take good, wet weather gear for the higher parts of the ride, we were drenched through! Expect a testing ride for ordinary cyclists but you will feel that you have achived something by the end of the journey.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely, eating out in local eateries at lunch and dinner plus no cars involved helps everyone.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good. I would, and already have, recommended Responsible Travel to people. Knowing that having a very enjoyable experience supports local communities makes it so much better. Thanks once again.
