1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were loads of oppotunities for wild swimming in the rivers and lakes.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Read all the information and notes on this holiday, as there are some really useful tips, eg ordering the breakfast hamper on the first day when the shops are shut, taking insect repellant, what kit to take etc.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

A good deal of effort was made to support local businesses, from restaurants to wine producers . We were encouraged to bring re-fillable water bottles to avoid buying plastic, and the villa is pretty well set-up with the environment in mind.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great fun and really interesting. Our fabulous hosts Tobi and Adel went out of their way to make sure everything went smoothly. The mix of organised activities and free time was just right, and we'd highly recommend this trip.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Excellent family (2 adults, 3 lads (12, 14 & 14) holiday. Lovely shared villa, absolutely stunning location. Nothing was too much trouble for our friendly and accommodating hosts Toby and Adel. Great selection of organised activities (walking, swimming, kayaking, boat rides, great food from local hosts) providing access to locations and experiences we wouldn't have found independently. My favourite day was spent kayaking and swimming in the lovely warm water, and stopping for lunch along the bank watching cows crossing the water.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We rented a car during our stay - gave us more flexibility on free days to explore further afield. Virpazar is a lovely village 20min walk away - nice restaurants and small supermarket. It was very warm when we stayed and their is no aircon in the villa - can get pretty sticky at night! The plunge pool certainly was helpful in this respect! Good Wi-Fi if needed. Washing machine available - so don't overpack your suitcase with clothes - but do: take mosquito repellent, shoes for water activities, filter water bottles and a sense of adventure!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes absolutely

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent family holiday - right balance of adventure, relaxation and exploration of a beautiful corner of the world.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Wild swimming.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Probably hire a car. Also a couple of families went on to travel to Kotor for a few days after and I think this would be a good idea to get the whole Montenegro taste.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We are and shopped locally and used very few resources. Walking, swimming etc.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

review 4 Aug 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Swimming in the pools under waterfalls in the mountains. Cycling along the shore of lake Shkodar. Meeting an artisan weaver and being shown how to use her loom. Seeing the Albanian Alps

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Go in May or June when it is cooler. Take lots of insect repellent. Expect to self cater or walk a long way to eat from the villa in Montenegro. You will spend most of your time with other families so if you need solitude this isn’t the right trip for you. Albania is more like a modern European destination and expect a lot of other tourists but great WiFi. Albanians are very friendly but have very different cultural values.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Local companies, local foods. Low impact activities where possible

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Outstanding.

review 1 Aug 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was all fab, every activity from white water rafting to walking round the lake was great for our family. The food was good and loads of it. Having guides to plan it all and give you a feel for the real country was brilliant.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

This is good value and if you like doing things as a family this is a great holiday.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Local people are partners in this which is great and we were careful about our environmental impact cleaning up some of the rubbish left in the rivers.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Brilliant holiday

review 15 Jul 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was really lovely seeing such unspoilt places which really did seem undiscovered. The waterfalls and river swimming and kayaking were all the more special because of that.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It’s very hot in July. Bring lots of insect repellent.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, on all these points. The villa was set up to keep our carbon footprint down. Meals and wine tasting with local families were lovely.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. We really enjoyed this trip and activities as a family of four, with two young adults (18 & 20).

review 14 Jul 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Kayaking in Lake Skadar

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Order the breakfast box for the Monday as the shops are shut on the Sunday when you arrive. Also, bring food with you to eat when you arrive on the Sunday as you may not feel like walking down for lunch.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, many of the lunches were with local families or visiting local businesses. The tickets to use the national park of lake Skadar go towards local conservation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

10/10. Villa Miela is gorgeous and has stunning views and fabulous hosts. The activities were great and the wildlife was superb.

Kayaking on Lake Skadar. Beautiful, close up bird life, swimming (lake surprisingly comfortable temperature), and visit to orthodox island home to a few nuns.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take mosquito spray and insect bite relief.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The meal at Tanya’s house was delicious and a highlight. All the activities were very close to the Vila so not far to travel to walk, swim and kayak. Composting in place at the vila also.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.

review 26 May 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There is not one thing. It was all so memorable with unspoiled scenery, great walks and freezing clear waters, the beautiful lake and bountiful wildlife.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Just be aware if you have knee/joint issues as the walks are often fairly steep and over uneven ground, sometimes involving clambering over rocks and up and down rocky pathways. I took some good walking boots and was grateful for them.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, particularly the meals enjoyed at the homes of local people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Loved this holiday. The hosts (Adel and Tobi) were very gracious, well organised and fun to be around. The villa and setting are beautiful. The activities were always interesting, with stunning views, and sometimes challenging (for us the kayaking for a day, having never kayaked before. Who knew travelling in a straight line could be so difficult!!) However, for younger souls this would not present an issue. If you are looking for a combination of beauty, relaxation and activity, in a more unexplored country, I would highly recommend this holiday.

review 19 Aug 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The kayaking on the lake.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Prepare for extremely hot weather - there is no air con in the accommodation. If you can hire a car for the evening/free days.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, we used local taxi service, shops and restaurants.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would rate it as fair. Unfortunately, the temperature was very hot which meant we did not enjoy the activities or the evenings as much as I had hoped. Some of the activities (the 10k walk) could have been reduced/changed to reflect the number of children in the party and the extreme temperatures (we did not have sufficient information about the walk to understand if it was in the children's capabilities to do the walk in the heat).

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Caroline, thank you again for choosing to holiday with us, and for sharing your feedback. We’re pleased to hear you enjoyed the kayaking – it’s a favourite for many of our guests and a water sport we pioneered at the National Park. We understand that the heat was an issue for you. Montenegro is a Mediterranean country and as such it can get very warm in August. Our stone farmhouse is cooled the traditional way by metre-thick stone walls, shutters and fans rather than carbon-guzzling air-conditioning – and we also provide our guests with plenty of keeping cool advice, a lovely swimming pool, and include extra water-based activities in summer. All of our excursions have been very well adapted to both youngsters and summer heat over the 15 years we have been running this holiday. Jumping in waterfalls and rivers and swimming in Lake Skadar is usually a highlight for our guests but two of your party of 6 chose not to participate in any of our activity days at all, which was a first. All but one of your family also declined to join us on a hike that involved three refreshing river swims that other guests have enjoyed, especially in the summer heat. While we understand everyone has different preferences, we genuinely believe that joining in more of the activities would have allowed your family to fully experience the beauty and adventure that our holiday offers. We hope you'll consider visiting again, perhaps during a cooler season, to make the most of everything Montenegro has to offer.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Beautiful country, great villa, fabulous hosts and wonderful accommodation - everything"

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The activities are quite full on - make sure you are fit enough.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We ate in local places and used local tour operators (boat trip) and local wine tasting.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Amazing week with Tobi, Adel, Dominik and Martina looking after us at Villa Miela. Thoroughly enjoyed all the activities including kayaking on the lake, hiking, wild swimming (lots!), bird spotting and wine tasting. Had some fabulous lunches in local places. Beautiful scenery and views. The pace of the trip pushed us a little at times (I would have been very happy with the kayak trip being 2km less!) but as 3x50yo women, we coped well! Took a trip by local train to see Stari Bar on our day off and visited the ruined old town as well as having another excellent lunch and pomegranate wine. Evenings were very chilled with either eating in the villa or a stroll into the village. The rest of our group were excellent and made the experience a lot of fun; including games nights and Abba "dancercise" workouts on the deck! Beautiful country and great way to see the area.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Everything was great! The views from the villa terrace ,the weather, the activities, the local wine ….. Kayaking day led by the owner Ben was definitely a highlight. I ve kayaked before but Ben’s tips on technique meant I could keep going all day and felt fine the next day. There were plenty of stops for wild swimming ,a picnic lunch, spectacular scenery and you have it all pretty much to yourselves! We also loved the hikes , the wine tasting and lunch at Tanya’s where we ate her home grown produce and tasted her wine and liqueurs.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Pack light. It’s all very casual and no need to dress up even if you take the easy walk into town for dinner out. Good trainers for hikes and water shoes for wild swimming/ clambering over rocks in the rivers and waterfalls .Sun hat essential- it was very hot! Being near a lake there are mosquitos so bring repellent etc. The local supermarket is small so if you have favourite snacks/food try to pack them-Our family of 6 were all vegetarian and were well catered for(make sure you let Ben know) but I did bring vegetable stock cubes with me for cooking at the villa (based on previous experience of self catering in countries where vegetarianism is uncommon).Bring breakfast for your first morning.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes very much so. Ben uses his links with many local people and businesses. There is also an emphasis on avoiding single use plastic and recycling.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

One of our best! Such a great holiday for couples and families who want to do more than just lie on the beach..The multi activity week was well paced with a couple of free days to either do day trips ( many options)or just chill on the yoga deck/swim in the pool. Highly recommended!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Lunch at Tanya’s house after a beautiful walk through the mountains and swimming in various river pools and waterfalls. Delicious home cooked, local food and wine at her home. And the Kayaking trip across Lake Skadar - the swimming, wildlife and views were spectacular.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

All the money we spent went directly to local people through the lunches, tours and activities and we walked, cycled or took only short car journeys for the entire week, travelling very sustainability.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Exceptional exploration of the beautiful Lake Skadar region.

review 22 Oct 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

- Bike ride to Podgorica and getting the train back. - Visiting the nunnery on Lake Skodar

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Embrace the Balkan spirit.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It did somewhat, but could have done more. A lot of the activities are run from the Villa on an independent basis, when local traders could maybe be on-boarded as partners. A case in point for me was the kayak trip. This involved loading a load of kayaks onto jeeps and driving about 15-20K down some dusty roads. There to offload and transport them to lake. Most of the Kayak trip tbh could have been anywhere, but the visit to the nunnery on a small island was a highlight. At the end, we had to reverse the transport of the kayaks. There seemed to be a lot of locals offering kayak trips in the village (not sure if they also involved road transfer of course) -- why not just engage one of them, and avoid both the carbon footprint of the jeep AND the time to transport and transfer everything AND support a local enterprise? Likewise, the train service (on the iconic Belgrade - Bar railway) seems to be a bit of a surprise to the team at the villa - but in fact is a very useful mode of transport both for the coast (Bar, Sutomare) and the city (Podgorica, or even I was tempted to get the sleeper to Belgrade). Why not print off timetable and provide link to the (perfectly usable) Montenegrin railways planner page, and encourage visitors to walk/cycle to the various stations and halts. The bicycle provision at present is frankly a bit varied, in terms of quality of bike and present levels of roadworthiness. That is a shame, since, in my opinion, this part of Montenegro is actually very well suited for leisure cycling - the roads are super-quiet, other road-users are friendly, the inclines are rarely steep and the scenery is fantastic.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I would rate it 5* for the sheer bravery of the concept and the beauty of the location, and 3* for the execution of the concept. The quality of accommodation is around about modern UK youth hostel standard, maybe a little higher, but not much (free local wine and OK beer at €1 a bottle on an honesty system were a nice touch sadly lacking from YHA tbf). We were lucky that all the people on the trip with us all seemed to have 'youth hostel' mentality, ie. don't mind using shared kitchen and all rub along together with some good chats, fun and mutual support. The accommodation is a bit far from the small village to make a comfortable walk/cycle, so it feels peaceful but also somewhat isolating, e.g. trip to the shop inevitably seemed to be a ride in a jeep; didn't really feel like staying too late in the village as otherwise longish walk home in the dark etc. In the week we were there, having been given the impression of a level of choice/input on the activities for the week, it turned out to be very much a 'take it or leave it'. Activities were biased towards a mix of 'extreme hiking' and 'wild swimming' - neither of those appeal to me, so I did some biking instead. The bikes there were "okay", though could do with some tlc. The biking itself was fantastic, so it seems a missed opportunity not to encourage people to do stuff they enjoy rather than just expect everyone to fall in with a set plan. Overall, I've given a 4* rating

Read the operator's response here:

Hi Eoin! We’re delighted that you enjoyed our holiday and we are always happy to receive feedback from our guests. All our activities support local enterprises - our groups eat lunches with local people, we regularly visit local winemakers and the island monasteries kayak trip you speak of is a highlight for many precisely because no-one else offers it (local firms offer only kayak rental from Virpazar and no guided trips at all). Did you know, for instance, that our company founders donated two community water filters to the monasteries, having built up a relationship with the nuns over a ten year period? And we also sponsor annual clean-ups at the National Park along with other environmental initiatives like pelican conservation. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed using our complimentary mountain bikes during your stay. It’s true that our activity holiday currently features more walking, wild-swimming and kayaking than cycling, but that’s the nature of a lake-based group holiday - we run a programme that ticks as many boxes for as many of our guests as possible. We wouldn’t describe any of the hikes as extreme (these are hill and forest trails we’ve used for years with mixed groups from age 7 to 70-something), but we suppose it depends on what you’re used to! Either way, you’ll be pleased to hear that we’re hoping to add some guided mountain biking trips to the portfolio for 2024 - watch this space! At Villa Miela we set out to provide a ‘home from home’ which comes with yoga deck, helpful hosts and beautiful pool. Our management team and volunteers are all very much aware of the train connections and recommend them every week - and we definitely agree, the route from Belgrade to Bar is one of the most spectacular rail journeys in Europe. More guests to arrive this way please!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The day kayaking and swimming in Lake Skadar. It was the day I was most looking forward to and it didn't disappoint. Well organised, beautiful weather and no other kayak groups in sight!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared for quite a physical holiday. We are frequent hikers, bikers etc so we found it absolutely fine, but there were a couple of people who hadn't prepared and they struggled with the hiking and kayaking a bit. The initial night's dinner is not at 9pm as advertised, it's around 6pm, which was a much better time for us!Also, the breakfast that we were offered in the information does not exist. You will need to get a lift at 7am down into town to get food from the very limited supermarket.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, especially the lunches that were arranged with local people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very enjoyable. We felt it well organised. The welcome meal was lovely and it was good of Ben to give up his time to arrange this.

review 31 Aug 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The sense of freedom, that's been long curtailed and nearly forgotten. This holiday brought back the zest of backpacking youth, knowledge, fun, relaxation, and escape from our overly monitored lives. Maybe, if I had to choose one thing that just wowed me most, it's the last day's wild swim. It took my breath away, so beautiful and stuff you dream about, discovering this heavenly oasis in a forested canopy with the clearest water glistening over the smoothed rocks beneath us. It was heaven on earth. Yes, it does exist, here in Montenegro.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The recommendations list from Ben and Emma, particularly on footwear. Wear factor 50+ at all times. Do check if your phone is unlocked or enabled, it won't automatically work otherwise. UK - roaming charges kick in soon. We just did hand luggage. It's all you need.Take cash. If you have a good camera - it's a photographer's heaven!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The return to common sense, basic living, basic needs incorporating recycling, respect for the environment, and with Ben and Emma's model how tourism needn't be messy. We can be part of acknowledging nature and instead of harming it, actually support its ability to flourish. Our brilliant hosts are clearly so passionate about their beautiful adopted homeland, and endorse a healthy approach towards tourism with tours that incorporate nature untouched and at its most stunning. Their commentary reminds us of the tourism they actively encourage that enhances and respects the beautiful habitat and still keeps everyone's experience absolutely unique. Ben and Emma's knowledge of the language, history, culture, and environment is second to none and I only wish we could have stayed longer. It's not only a brilliant holiday, it's very interesting and they are people of their word, not just talking the talk but actively promoting kinder and respectful behaviours towards the environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It will take a lot to top this holiday. We miss it already. It wasn't just a holiday, it was an incredible experience we will never forget! The tour size was perfect, and the ease from start to finish and wrap-around care was faultless. I love their integrity and passion for this area of the world. Our hosts were so knowledgeable. We learned loads. We loved the blend of tours with activities and invitations with local people that gave a real insight into Montenegro's history and culture and the whole experience is a far cry from token gesture tourism more interested in your wallet. This holiday was exceptional. I am so grateful for the friends, the ease and joy it brought us and we really cannot wait to take another adventure with them. Utterly brilliant!!!!

review 19 Aug 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We discussed this and noone had the same answer! For one, it was the kayaking, for another the Land Rover safari and swimming in the lake and rivers. My son loved hurling himself off various bridges and rocks. Personally I loved the hike with Matija, which was a challenge for me in the heat, but absolutely worth it.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you're up for a challenge, and want to discover an amazing relatively unspoilt country, seriously, just book it. As an overweight guy in my early fifties, losing a few (okay more than a few) kilos would have made the kayaking and hiking particularly in the August heat) less taxing. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness will be absolutely fine - my wife and kids had no issues - but I do wish I'd foregone a few slices of pizza before jumping on the plane...

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely. We bought all our food from the local village, ate out there too and used small-scale operators for trips on the lake and the optional activity, canyoning. Any food cooked for us was apparently either raised or grown in the vicinity, and we drank local wine and beer. Recycling and composting at Villa Miela was pretty comprehensive. Ben and Emma are passionate about their environment and were key figures in protecting an idyllic corner of Lake Skadar from development.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was just great. We had some real adventures, made a couple of good friends along the way, and we all agreed it was one of our very best family holidays. As new converts to the region, we are already considering where the next trip may take us... Bosnia anyone?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Great adventures to areas of unspoilt beauty.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take some good sting walking shoes or boots and some swimming gear as you will need it for the beautiful swimming spots you will visit.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes 100% - we are with locals, visited the national park and saw beautiful birds and other wildlife. Our hosts Ben & Emma are very much supportive of reducing environmental impacts wherever possible.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent - Best Yet A+++++.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Wild swimming in rivers and lakes.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take a two-stage water filter bottle for when you get thirsty on long walks (as recommended by the company.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. The villa had wildflower gardens and a natural saline pool. Ben and Emma put us in touch with recommended locals for an amazing boat trip. They are very conscious and supportive of local conservation projects and issues.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fabulous – great combination of enjoyable activities at a pace to suit our group.

Take lots of mosquito repellent if prone to bites. Be prepared for limited choice eg cereals in local supermarket.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes it supported local businesses ie the winery, payment for use of the lake, eating out etc. Despite this the local environment is suffering particularly with litter some of which is inevitably tourist related.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very good

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was all amazing. For a start the nature and the beautiful surroundings were so unspoilt. There was not a monoculture in site and so many beekeepers. The weather was great. We did lots of hiking and wild swimming galore.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be relatively fit, you do get some time to relax. Our place had a small swimming pool slightly salted and no chlorine. The beach was only 30 minutes away.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely and they need it. There were hardly any tourists thanks to various governments ridiculous covid policies. Our amazing English hosts Ben and Emma have totally embraced the country. They speak the language and actively campaign to raise awareness on vast array of issues.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We cannot recommend it highly enough.

The whole week was memorable! The warm welcome from Ben and Emma, hiking without seeing another soul just lots of beautiful scenery, picking (and eating) wild pomegranates, swimming in rock pools and under waterfalls, toasting marshmallows in the fire pit, encountering a wild boar not far from the villa, taking endless photos of the children diving into the lake....

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Pack plenty of swimming gear and quick drying clothes.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It's very difficult to pick one bit, it was all fantastic, the people, the activities and the location

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Unless you plan on buying lots of gifts you dont need a lot of travel money despite it being self catering, as most lunches are included on the activity days. I would also recommend hiring a car even if it is just for a day or two or for the days off, I took a drive to the coast on my last day off and it was worth the last minute hire

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, definitely, we ate local produce, bought local produce and were sure to keep waste to a minimum, this was strongly lead by Ben and Emma and their tour guides.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic! It was a great experience.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Villa Miela is located in a absolutely wonderful location, with beautiful views! The outside areas and the large decking are brilliant! All activities were fantastic; the free days we spent at the Villa with the other families, which was also so much fun! I really don't know what I would pick as the most memorable part, every day was so much fun. The holiday offered the perfect mix of varied activities and relaxing in fabulous surroundings. Ben and Emma were the perfect hosts and guides!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you have any questions or worries about the holiday, anything you are unsure about, I would recommend asking the hosts. They always answered all my questions very quickly, including about food allergies, and with lots of detail, which was extremely helpful! One of our children has several food allergies and this was no issue at all on this holiday (which is not always the case!)

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We ate at a family home and very small local places and breakfast was served from local produce.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Definitely one of the best holidays we have had, absolutely brilliant!!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

My highlights were visiting the beautiful waterfalls and hidden spots in nature, the children loved the wild swimming and jumping off rocks.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure you are fit and healthy and ready for lots of fun activities.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, Ben and Emma used all local guides and services, they were very knowledgeable about conservation in the area and actively support various conservation and environmental projects.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We had an excellent holiday even though our son was ill - Ben and Emma are great hosts, welcoming, knowledgeable and very supportive when we needed medical help for our son. The children (and us) loved all the activities and the villa was really nice and comfortable. We’d reluctantly recommend this holiday as really we’d like Montenegro to stay a hidden secret!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Everything was brilliant. We loved all the activities, our children would say the best thing was all the jumping into water during the walking, kayaking, boat trip etc.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

You will need a basic level of fitness to enjoy this trip. A car is not necessary but is useful if you want to visit anywhere on your days off from the activities or don’t fancy the walk back to the house from the village in the dark.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes definitely. The hosts supported the local people totally. They were integrated with the local community, helping them with local environmental issues and trying to prevent any large scale development which would affect the national park. Breakfast baskets were sourced locally, local families/ small restaurants provided meals on some of the trips and a local family ran the boat trip.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic. Probably the best family holiday we have ever had. We would highly recommend it.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Kayaking on Lake Skadar, with serene views to the mountains of Albania and visiting the island monasteries. Also great company of others in the group.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you like to get off the beaten track , meet people and and see the real Montenegro, this is for you. Ben and Emma live next door to the 3 bed Villa Miela-where you stay and meet others on the holiday and largely self cater, although we often ate together as a group in a local home stay, which was far more fun and better food as local shop is limited, as are restaurants. The trips out to do wild swimming, wine tasting , kayaking are great, ideally bring footwear that you can walk and cross rivers in. Remember your reusable water bottle as it is hot and you need loads of water. Excellent mountain bikes at the Villa but almost too hot to use safely in August. We also did our own boat trip on the lake, on our free day, up through the water lilies to Kom monastery, great fun. Another family took the train to Bar to go and see the old town of Stari Bar. Villa Miela itself has a lovely small pool, great terrace to lounge on and fabulous views. Would recommend this holiday, next time thinking of exploring Albania

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes definitely

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A great experience.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Fabulous lunch on first activity day and jumping into the cold water at the waterfall on the last activity day.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

You need to like the outdoors! Bring a refillable water bottle and mosquito repellent. If you want your breakfasts made for you stay the Badanj village rooms - only €5 pp and all freshly made and the rooms have AC. If you want a pool and a more luxurious surroundings I would suggest Villa Miela.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes in terms of eating and shopping locally

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Really enjoyable family time that gave us structure to our days and gave us access to things you wouldn’t normally find as a visitor

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Kayaking at Lake Skadar, wild swimming in the warm lake, having lunch at such a beautiful spot in the cliffside overlooking the lake. So many memorable things including hiking through the woods, up the mountain to another beautiful location for lunch with a wonderful panorama of the mountains. The boat trip on Lake Skadar is a must to appreciate the wildlife and the outstanding natural beauty of this place.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Just do it.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely. The local people benefitted when we ate out at local restaurants, stayed at their accommodation, bought local produce in the shop and vineyard! Local people provided the boat trip and taxi's to the airport. The operators work actively to help reduce environmental impacts and support conservation in order that the beauty and wildlife of Montenegro can be looked after for now and future generations.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. Without having found this holiday we would never have discovered all these outstandingly beautiful wild places to visit as some were off the beaten track. The hosts were perfect, so passionate about Montenegro and determined to make sure everyone enjoyed their holiday to the full. It was one of the best holidays we have ever had.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Swimming in many of the beautiful rivers of this beautiful country and seeing the huge number of wildflowers, butterflies, birds, reptiles and lots more. And going to sleep to the sounds of nightingale and nightjars calling :-)

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you book during June, or later in the summer, get up early to enjoy the cooler air and the peaceful mornings.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. It is possible to get to this location via public transport (this possibly should be more encouraged). There is lots of emphasis of the importance of the natural world, support for conservation projects and ways to reduce environmental impacts (e.g. re-usable bags are available for shopping, breakfast comes from very local sources etc.). Meals at homesteads also supports local people. Overall there is a great appreciation of the environment and the importance of engaging with local people in order to promote and highlight the local beauty.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great, a great place, a great group of people, a beautiful villa and some lovely excursions.

Ensure you take sprays and lotions to help prevent and treat mosquito bites.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Ben and Emma took us to local families where we enjoyed home made wines and food. All of which were great.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and though some of the days were tiring, felt very relaxed.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

All of the activities were memorable but particularly kayaking through the peaceful channels and lily covered waters of Lake Skadar to see the breeding colony of Dalmatian Pelicans. So scenic, tranquil and a haven for wildlife. This is an experience which can’t be replicated elsewhere. For excitement and refreshment from the heat it’s hard to beat jumping into the crystal clear river pools and swimming under waterfalls!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We flew to Tivat which is only 1hr 15 mins and €50 by taxi but it gives opportunity to see the coastline. Ask the taxi driver to take the mountain road instead of the tunnel for the best views. Ours kept stopping for us to take photos without us even asking! Tivat is only 11km from Kotor so we chose to leave on Saturday lunchtime and spend our last evening and night in the Old Town staying in Studio Max for €42. It’s up 82 steps but has a pretty garden overlooking Kotor. Taxi from Kotor to airport was €15

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Ben and Emma actively encourage recycling and they also supply cloth bags for shopping. They offer a fabulous locally produced breakfast, include local wine producers and restaurants in their itineraries. One of the lunch stops was to a local village house where we enjoyed 15 home grown, home cooked dishes which was amongst one of the best feasts I have ever had! They are also passionate about conservation and are actively involved in the pelican protection program.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent! Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. One of the best holidays we have had if not the best!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to try the local food and wines, it makes the holiday truly unique.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes we visited many local restaurants, a local winery and even visited a local house for lunch on our trek. I really felt we had experienced real Montenegro.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

One of our best family holidays.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

This holiday has been absolutely amazing. If you love exploring the outdoors and are willing to give everything a go, this is the holiday to go on. This holiday provided us a range of activities including hiking around waterfalls, swimming in secret spots, kayaking activities and meal in local homes, all of which were immersed in breath taking scenery and nature. Not only were the activities incredible, the hosts Ben and Emma were absolutely amazing. They were very friendly and chatty, happy to talk about their experinces and time in Montenegro as well as sharing plenty of knowledge about the area and its history. They were fanscinating to listen to and very entertaining. The villa itself was very comfortable with great views and easy access to ammenities.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared! Hiking boots, sun cream, waterproofs etc. Make sure you have comfortable walking gear and a swimming costume or two at hand for spontaneous swimming!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes! Very much so. This holiday gave the local people business and the holiday actively contributed to preserving the wildlife around. They are conscious of the materials they use and encourage the people around them to be the same.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely fantastic!

If you don't have a car and you are not in the Villa stay in the apartments near town to save on taxis

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

As the activities involved hiking, swimming and kayaking they gave limited impact in the environment. We visited several local business for lunch

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Scenery is amazing. Some photos just don't do it justice. Ben and Emma of who run the tour have great organised excursions, the wine tasting was a great day, a good way to get to know the other guests and the day kayaking was brilliant. So good that I am going to look into the wild kayaking that is also available.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't panic if email responses are slow, but give them a nudge if you are concerned. The website is to be updated as there are some outdated news. Don't need to bring all cash, as there is a cash machine in the town (it's a tiny town and a 30 min walk from villa) and the shop and restaurant does take card. Cash needed for excursions.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, very much, the operator is continuously making connections with the local people to help them make the most of the tourist industry. They are also very dedicated to the conservation of Lake Skadar and very knowledgeable with the local history.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The whole holiday was great, the right amount of relaxation and activities. There are a couple of days off for you to organise your own activity, exploration or if the weathers great, there is a pool at the villa. Overall a great holiday and a beautiful country and people.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was all fantastic - the wine tasting was just superb, kayaking most enjoyable and the fisherman's lunch delicious. Being given Rakija to taste from a couple's "Stil" at the roadside on the way to Tania's amazing lunch was extremely memorable! The swim stops, the hikes, the scenery, the company and gaining an insight into the real Montenegro.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Just do it!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely benefited local people, both Ben and Emma appear to have worked extremely hard at working with local people to help provide delicious food, produce and show us their way of life. I believe they also are very supportive of conservation in the area with the wildlife & on the Lake.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Couldn't fault it - excellent :)

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Every day provided something special. The scenery everywhere we visited and travelled through is stunning. Discovering and then jumping into beautiful, hidden pools and rivers, whilst on wonderful day hikes, were a joy. Being animal lovers, the Villa Miela rescued pets were great company and made the place feel even more homely.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring plenty of bug spray! Pack fairly lightly as storage space is at a premium in the bedroom, and you really will spend most of your time in shorts anyway. The supermarket in Virpazar has most things you will need although bring some good coffee if a caffein hit is needed to start your day. We elected to transfer from Dubrovnik, which was convenient as regards flights, but a return border delay of around an hour made the total transit time 4 hours.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Ben and Emma encouraged us to eat at local homesteads, where the food was both delicious and plentiful, and to sample local wines at source. Our hosts made a great effort to ensure we all enjoyed an authentic experience of Montenegro and they are passionate about preserving the wonderful countryside from over-development.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. We were so fortunate to be teamed up with a great group of like-minded, fun-loving guests, who all threw themselves into every activity (literally!). Ben and Emma were more than tour guides; they were encouraging, inspiring, knowledgeable and fun to be with.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Breathtaking views of Lake Skadar and surrounds.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If Villa Miela isn’t available try Badanj villa. Again incredible panoramic views from the dining table where amazing breakfasts are available.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes I believe holidaying with this operator benefits local people and supports conservation with efforts to reduce environmental impacts. Ben & Emma have organised trips around visiting local homes for home produced lunches and wineries for sampling delicious wines and honey. Without their in-depth local knowledge we would not have found such wonderful places to visit.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Beautiful country, fabulous hosts, fauna & flora, food & wine, culture, history and good paced activities for various ages & abilities = recipe for excellence

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were lots! Different answers from different members of the family - jumping off a bridge into the river, refreshingly brisk mountain river swims, the fish soup, the views, chilling with Koko, Wooster and Rosie, and doing such a variety of activities with a great group of people.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Get stuck in, and a good pair of walking sandals would be extremely helpful.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely. Payments for additional meals and trips were given directly to the providers, and the emphasis was on seeing the true Montenegro and interacting with the local community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic. We just could not have arranged all this ourselves!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Kayaking to island monasteries on the most beautiful lake in the world!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take several swimming costumes so you always have a dry one for the next amazing wild swim.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes - Ben and Emma were actively fighting a resort being built illegally in the national park. All our activities were undertaken with great sensitivity to the nature around us and we supported the local economy, particularly through enjoying local cooking.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was one of our best holidays ever. The surroundings were utterly beautiful, the activities were amazing and our hosts made everything work seamlessly.

review 8 Sep 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We are finding it difficult to decide on the best bit as it was all great. I loved the kayaking and the swimming while Nick loved the hikes. We also loved Milo’s performance with wild animals!!! The fish soup was a highlight too. We had a great group of people which made the holiday so much fun.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Definitely buy the LifeStraw water bottles as being able to refil the bottle with lake water was a revelation. Make sure you have a good, basic level of fitness to get the most out of it and be brave! I never thought I would jump off a 5m high platform into a river. Pack your case and then remove 1/2 of the clothes, you just need shorts, T-shirts, swimwear, trainers and water shoes (during summer). We tagged on 3 days in Perast at the end which was just lovely and I would recommend it.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Ben and Emma show a real commitment to this. They supply reusable shopping bags to reduce the number of plastic bags used. They promote the use of the reusable water bottles, and we ate some amazing meals cooked by local families that Ben and Emma have become friends with. We also know that they organised and paid for bins to be sited in the local area and they contribute money to the Dalmatian Pelican conservation project.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic. We got so much more out our trip by having such knowledgeable guides and went to places that most tourists wouldn’t have access to. The age range on this holiday was 8 to 58 and I think everyone loved it.

review 6 Aug 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I don't think I could possibly single one part out. The whole week was memorable, from arriving at Villa Miela (I actually am lost for words to describe the stunning views from the terrace), watching my oldest (14 years old!) drive a Land Rover Defender and jump into Lake Skadar from a rock as tall as a house, my youngest eventually summoning up the courage to jump off a bridge into a warm river, kayaking for 13.5 km (with lots of cooling jumps into the lake), wild swimming, bat caves, delicious Montenegrin food, lazy days around the pool, the volume of activities, the Walnut Valley hike to Dupilo for the most amazing food I have EVER eaten, meeting the lovely and welcoming hosts Ben and Emma, Coco the dog and Wooster the cat...I loved every minute!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Just book it! Consider combining it with the multi activity holiday in the North of Montenegro as you'll find you don't want to go home after a week.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely. Ben and Emma took us to local restaurants and homes to eat delicious, traditional Montenegrin food.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the best holiday we have ever been on and wish we had been able to stay longer. The area around Lake Skadar is amazingly beautiful and we are already missing the view from our balcony.

review 31 Jul 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The beautiful views from the garden in Villa Miela, the villa itself which was an amazing place to stay. So comfortable and spotlessly clean. We loved the day kayaking on Lake Skadar and the Walnut Forest walk. The white water rafting in Durmitur National Park was great fun. Spending time in the garden of the villa, playing petanque, swimming and meeting the wild tortoises was very memorable too.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Read the kit list carefully and take everything on it. Be prepared to join in and have a go at all the activities. If you are taking the three day extension to go up to Durmitur National Park for white water rafting and hiking, take a warm jacket or fleece and a waterproof as even in July we were caught out by cool weather and thunderstorms.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The suggestion to buy a Life Straw water filtration bottle to save on plastic water bottles is an excellent idea. The small town of Virpaznar benefits hugely from travellers as we shopped in the local market, bought fruit from the locals, ate in different, family run restaurants and did some activities on our free day that were based in the village and around the lake. Our hosts were so knowledgeable about the flora, fauna, wildlife and history of this beautiful area and support the conservation and environmental aspects wherever possible.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

If you are looking for an activity holiday that is for families with children, solo travellers, couples or friends then this is the one for you!

review 8 Jul 2018

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Gaby and I are split on this one. The wine tasting and wild swimming came joint first!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The thing we wish we had brought was open sandals instead of flip flops or trainers. They better suit long hikes in the hot weather.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Ben and Emma created a programme which allowed us to meet the local population. People we would not have met without their local knowledge and connections. They had bikes we could borrow and organised collections to/ from the airport making it unnecessary to hire a car.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We had a fantastic time. Ben and Emma were the perfect hosts! They were attentive and catered for everyone's needs by customising the week to what everyone wanted. The villa was stunning, with amazing views and had great facilities, an unexpected delight being the pool! We feel so lucky that our first group holiday experience together was so good. There was just the right balance between guided sessions and free time. The other guests were lovely too! We'd highly recommend this holiday to anyone!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I loved the wild swimming in beautiful pools and waterfalls, especially after walking on rocky paths in hot sun! The water was icy but very refreshing. And I had never been in a kayak before, and it was lovely to be on the lake. On one day we kayaked to see pelicans, only possible at this time of year, we went through water lilies and it was all very beautiful.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

You’ll need water shoes as well as walking boots. And don’t bother with smart clothes, it’s all very casual!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, as it is self catering we used the local shops and restaurants. Ben and Emma have good relationships with local people and businesses. It’s very environmentally friendly, with an emphasis on recycling and using local produce.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

One of the best ever, I had a wonderful time!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Hiking barely-there paths to hidden away waterfalls and other swimming spots. Kayaking on the lake, and never being able to get used to the continuously amazing views.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you have hiking sandles that you're happy to get wet, bring them! Otherwise wet shoes are helpful, but you'll have to change back into trainers to continue the hike. A travel towel is essential!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes! Virpazar doesn't get much tourism, so this trip helps the locals thrive. Also while we were out kayaking / hiking, we would help the hosts by joining them in picking up bits of plastic and binning them. Everyone was asked to bring their own water bottles so plastic ones weren't needed to be bought. And the paths we hiked had been cut back a bit for access, but no concrete path had been laid, which kept the paths natural and conserved.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

10 / 10 would go again. The hosts are the most wonderful people who I very much hope to meet again in the future. They'll provide you with a selection of varied activities, and perfect holiday!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The beautiful landscapes and thoughtfully crafted & enjoyable activities.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I went in April and it was an excellent time to visit. Perfect warm (but not too warm) weather for hiking & beautiful spring flowers everywhere.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Ben and Emma are so well integrated with the local community and clearly play an important role initiating local projects aimed at reducing environmental impacts and preserving the lake and natural environment. It was incredible to experience the local food and wine knowing that everything on your plate was sourced within about 2km. We felt much better knowing we were supporting local food producers.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was a perfect mixture of varied, challenging and thoroughly enjoyable activities and stunning scenery. And Ben and Emma’s knowledge and anecdotes about the local area and country were fascinating and added volumes to the experience. They provided very useful tips and guidance about things to do and getting about on our free days as well. It really meant we could get the most out of the week. Definitely highly recommend this trip!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

This was a fantastic holiday with many memorable moments! We loved the beautiful scenery; the walking, wild swimming and kayaking. It was wonderful to be somewhere so peaceful and so stunningly beautiful and to be able to experience the country with such dedicated and enthusiastic people.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure you have good shoes for walking and lots of sun protection. You will need a decent level of fitness (to be able to hike all day in the sun) and a sense of adventure!!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes absolutely! Ben and Emma (our hosts) made sure they took us to local peoples homes and businesses. They explained how they have given back to the community (for example buying water storage devices for the isolated monasteries).

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Fantastic. We had the time of our lives! Would definitely do it all over again.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Being in an amazing part of the world, with a group of like-minded people, hiking through woods, wild water swimming, swimming in a waterfall, visiting an island monastery. My son and daughter both loved the off-road trip with the land rover, jumping from a village bridge into a river, seeing Golden Orioles and Hoopooes was another highlight.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring waterproof sandals or shoes, factor 50 sun cream and a sense of adventure. Renting a car is not necessary but it did mean that we could make day trips on our days off. All the hikes and kayaking were very suitable and really enjoyable for both of us as parents and for our kids aged 12 and 18.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely. A local friend of Ben and Emma cooked an amazing meal for us during one of the hikes. The tour operator supports local people and businesses by drawing on their services, and supporting an isolated community in a small Eastern European country, off the beaten track. Most days were spent in wild unspoilt nature.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was a fantastic holiday for us, we just loved discovering and enjoying this stunning part of Montenegro. Ben and Emma were superb hosts, with outstanding local knowledge and an infectious passion for Montenegro, its wilderness, people and culture, all in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Spending a week with like-minded people was so much fun, I can't believe how much we managed to do in just a week. Excellent planning on Ben and Emma's part. We went with our 12-year old and 18 year old who both loved this adventure holiday so much. I just couldn't believe this incredible country is only a 2.5 hour flight away from our home in England.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Booking a family holiday for myself, hubby, 16 year old son and daughter of 18 yrs, into shared (with strangers!) accommodation was thankfully a total success! We were lucky enough to share the Villa with two lovely couples, their company definitely enhanced our holiday (not just by curtailing the usual family bickering!), but by sharing a love for jumping into fresh water rivers, eating local food and drinking local wine! This holiday was made especially special by the warmth, enthusiasm and local knowledge of Ben and Emma. Their choice of itineraries are varied and fun, from kayaking to hiking. My son even got to drive their defender (magic moment for him!), while I saw lesser horseshoe bats in the most beautiful setting! My husband made use of the bikes and enjoyed his early morning cycle training! Seeing tortoises ambling along in their own environment is a wonderful sight. Jumping into rivers on a hot summers day is a tonic!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Eating in local houses and wine tasting in local vine yards all benefited local people. Walking, cycling and kayaking all have a low impact on the environment as does water from a spring, recycling waste etc. Ben and Emma are passionate about what they do and enthuse all they meet in a positive way.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Too many memorable parts. The whole holiday was a great experience. The hosts, Ben and Emma were excellent. Very friendly and with incredible local knowledge on just about anything we asked them. You cannot fail to be impressed at the amazing landscape. I've traveled quite a lot around the world and these views are right up there with the best i've ever seen.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Make sure to take the correct clothing and equipment with you. In particular if the weather forecast is changeable. A decent camera is a must to try and capture the stunning views.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Most certainly. The carefully managed tourism is a benefit to the local people. We had a number of visits to local places for food and wine which was great. Ben and Emma were mindful of the impact tourism has on the environment and made sure not to upset that fine balance. All trips were carefully designed/planned to minimize any impact on the environment but at the same time to truly appreciate the beauty of it all.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A great adventure holiday which was both active and relaxing at the same time. Different stunning views everyday. A great chance to be introduced to some of the local people who were always very friendly and welcoming. Made some great friends with the other guests which made the whole holiday experience interesting and fun. A most memorable holiday.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We were the only tourists we saw all week, apart from a day we went to the coast which wasn't arranged by the hosts we were taken to hidden gems all week long, we would never have discovered these places without our fantastic hosts.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Don't expect to sit still for long, although there is time to relax (I read 2 books) you are on the go every day. Every day is different and totally worth the early starts. Just go.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Ben and Emma our hosts have fully integrated with the local people who speak very little or no English at all. They are local celebrities. We drank pure spring water from the garden all week and bought local food from farmers and bought souvenirs hand made by the villagers. The locals were always pleased to see us.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It was fantastic. First time we have done an activity holiday and will definitely do another, we learnt kayaking and hiked miles through the most stunning scenery. We swam in mountain springs and jumped from bridges in to the river, sat under waterfalls and met some fantastic people. Every day was fabulous.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

We had a truely wonderful holiday.Emma and Ben and their children and dog coco made us so welcome in villa miela which has incredible views and we loved trying to spot the villa on our days out loking across from other mountains!! The day trips were all amazing but when i asked my children boys aged 13 and 10 and girl 6 what their favourite was it was the day we swam hiked and ended up at a floating restaurant where they could jump into a deep deep river from a bridge (all very safe) followed by a drive across flood plains looking at birds which felt more like africa than europe with its birdlife every day was amazing but that was the winner other highlights : swimming in hidden pools on a hike and recieving an amazing lunch cooked by a local family kyaking on millpond water thats warm!! loads of swimming and waterfights and views of albanian mountains and birdlife we have SO many amazing photos we saw so many new bits of wildlife tortoises legless lizards crayfish frogs bats harmless water snakes we had amazing company from other families on the trips who were all like minded and alot of fun to be with. Emma and Ben who run these tours tailor the trips to the groups requirements so im so certain that anyone would have as great a time as we did.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Just to go! Montenegro is only 3 hours away from UK and yet a world apart It gave our children a distinct feeling that they had gone further off the beaten track than we had seeing new animals and having exciting experiences the views of mountains and lakes at various times of the day were never something we stopped loving looking at . Both my husband and myself agree that if we had gone on our own as a family and arranged the trip independantly we would have had fun and seen beautiful views but we have learnt that having the knowledge of local guides like ben and emma made our visit so much more worthwhile we saw places and views and hidden gems that we would never have come across by chance

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

YES - Emma and Ben very aware of local people and helping the local environment through arranged trips they do to reduce the plastic bottle littering that can occur we had lovely meals cooked in hard to seek out local places

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It has given our children the travel bug which is great because we travelled so much before we had children. It is the perfect trip for previously backpacking parents to introduce their family to the wonder of visiting places off the beaten track It is the perfect trip for anyone who loves birds views hiking food and finding hidden gems in an undiscovered part of europe Just dont tell too many people!!! Thanks you Ben and Emma and Nell says hello to Freddie too

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I loved the opportunity for wild swimming in Lake Skadar and surrounding rivers in the area. The National Park is outstandingly beautiful, and at times we felt like the only people there.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I would recommend mosquito repellent , but go with an open mind and keenness to be challenged with some fabulous outdoor activities.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Ben and Emma are totally committed to conserving the local environment, creating business opportunities for local people and to the holiday maker giving back to the local economy .

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

My holiday was wonderful. The villa was a wonderful place to stay, we shared catering facilities and outings with other like minded people and thoroughly enjoyed the activities delivered by our hosts Ben and Emma. I will remember our holiday for many years to come.

review 7 Aug 2016

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There were so many highlights of the holiday: the breath-taking scenery around Lake Skadar which is totally unspoilt and so truly spectacular (a boat trip is highly recommended); all of the guided activities ‘off the beaten track’ with Ben and Emma (including hill walking, kayaking, swimming in secluded rivers and pools; rock scrambling to the bat cave – particularly enjoyed by our 12 year old son; the warm welcome we received at the wine tasting venues – this turned out to be an unexpectedly special time; eating delicious home-grown food /drink prepared exclusively for us by local people – Tanya’s walnut liqueur is a revelation!) and spending time relaxing on the terrace (or in the hot tub) at Villa Miela and taking in the beautiful view. Ben and Emma are fabulous hosts and we really appreciate the time, thought, care and expertise (not least the translating skills which are invaluable) that has gone into creating such a unique experience. We are so glad we found them because we would not have been able to explore and discover the nooks and crannies of National Park as we did without their in-depth knowledge and understanding of the local area and its history. It was great being driven through the village by Ben and Emma and being met with friendly smiles and waves at every turn.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We are always keen to hire a car when visiting new places so we did pick up a car from Podgorica. However, on reflection, we feel that a car is not essential at all for the multi-activity holiday especially since the road infrastructure and parking facilities in Montenegro are not that well placed for even a modest influx of tourists in peak season (July/August) - some of the more idyllic lake and beach locations are quite challenging to drive to. We even found it quite difficult to park in the village at the bottom of the hill. So, it was much more relaxing to stroll down (20 mins) and then seek out one of the taxi drivers to drive us back up the hill for 2 Euros – all we had to do was mention Ben and Emma to any of the locals and as if by magic a taxi driver would appear!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely 100% yes. Ben and Emma are committed to sustainable tourism and are working closely with the local community to ensure that tourism is increased whilst protecting the natural beauty of the lake and the surrounding area.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

For us the holiday ticked all the boxes for what we were looking for and the magic provided by Ben and Emma’s personal touches and the other guests we met at Villa Miela made it all the more special. Thank you all for the wonderful memories.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The hill walks, wild swimming, meeting local people, eating authentic (and very delicious) local food and finding the real Montenegro. Emma and Ben were tireless hosts and looked after the whole party incredibly well.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Bring sand shoes to wear when wild swimming - some of the river swims are very stony and it will make swimming much easier. And be prepared for anything - Ben & Emma's recommendations were always suitable for the party - we were a party of 2 families and 2 couples with ages ranging from 59 - 14yrs - and the level of activities seemed to suit everyone.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, Ben & Emma have great relationships with the locals and appear to have done everything they can to benefit the local people and environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We loved it. We were just the right kind of busy and were taken on some truly memorable trips, it was quite a privilege to be part of it. I'm not reborn, but this was one of the better holidays that I've been on.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The holiday provider in general - Highlight Rock scrambling to the source of the River Crnojevica , through the Obod Cave which also happens to be a major Bat habitation with the unavoidable additional hazard of Bat poo.. Great feeling to finally emerge from 45/50 minutes severe scrambling into the daylight . Adrenalin and sense of achievement at high level . Shortly followed by swimming in the 16 C. degree water of the river - just so cleansing .!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Trust in R.T and their recommendation to go with Ben and Emma Heywood of Villa Meila at Undiscovered Montenegro. - see my separate Trip A review on . This is my second Responsible Travel venue ( now been three / four times diving in Dahab and will go again-) and for 2017 seriously thinking of your kayaking in Norway.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

From 7/8 years involvement with the Lake Skardar community , Ben and Emma are welcomed and recognised as friends wherever they go or their name is mentioned. Their support to the local people as a bringer of controlled and responsible tourism is widely known plus their involvement with local social / environmental and community issues . Just like Lynn and Helal in Dahab.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Brilliant holiday -Bens local knowledge and contacts brings extra dimensions to the holiday that no Hotel or Commercial Travel Agency could ever start to replicate. Additionally I would add that circumstances allowed me to extend my stay in Montenegro - I was able to travel both within Durmitov National Park and explore Kotor and surrounding area . Just a superb holiday. Definitely Five Star . At 74/75 yrs - not reborn /I wish........ but one of my very best holidays. Recommendation to R.T - Contact Nikola Ognjenovic of 'Montenegro Rafting ' - I have his telephone number.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take: small denominations of euro's as v cheaper bottle of wine) (5-10 euro) per meal, suncream was hard to find we ran out after 25-30 o all week, wet wear for the rains, rock able shoes, any special treats as we loved food but some preferred home comforts- it was meat/fish/veg based diet. Warm wear as villa v cool in the morning but whole area heats by noon. Take photo of translation pages of travel book so when you're out & about you can point at your phone to communicate otherwise v difficult. Under pack if anything - the Voli in the village does the job for nearly everything you'd need.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Fantastic holiday if you are active and adventurous, and also enjoy learning about history and culture of the places you visit. Bring proper hiking boots or appropriate shoes if you can, as it will make a difference while hiking on uneven terrain.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The holiday definitely benefited local people, respecting the environment of the beautiful Lake Skadar National Park. Equally importantly, it benefited us as well: this experience enriched us both beyond words.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

review 27 Sep 2016

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It is a beautiful and unspoilt part of the country - and the lake is breathtaking. The boat trip on the lake arranged by Emma on short notice, as we couldn't kayak was very special. Some of the views when hiking, the waterfalls and the meal at Tanya's were memorable, as was the bridge jump. We used the 2 days off to explore further afield, and Emma was on hand for advice, recommendations and making arrangements.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Sharing a villa with lots of different people, where the self catering accommodation and facilities were a bit akin to being back at uni requires one to muck in, and ensure group co-operation. We were under the impression hikes would be easy to moderate, but the experienced hikers amongst us agreed hikes were at times more technically challenging. So, the right hiking boots are essential, as well as a good ruck sack and wet gear - particularly if it rains as there are no drying facilities in the villa. A moderate level of fitness would be helpful to ensure one gets the best out of the activities. Come prepared for the first breakfast as no basic supplies are provided. Mosquitoes are a problem, as you would expect, so bring stuff for your room as well as yourself. The village is c45 minute round walk, so if you want to go out at night to eat, transport (or using a taxi) would be preferable as the road up to the villa is unlit and potholed in places.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It was evident that Emma and Ben are well integrated into the local community and use their network and contacts to benefit others and give their guests experiences they would not otherwise be aware of. They appear concerned and proactive in improving the services for the local community

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Without Emma and Ben's enthusiastic and knowledgeable input we feel sure we could not have experienced and enjoyed Montenegro as fully as we did. The activities were more challenging than we expected, but Emma assisted on the hikes with infinite patience. We were lucky to be with a lovely bunch of people with diverse interests and backgrounds who encouraged and were good company. At the end of a long season some of the villa's facilities perhaps needed a bit of TLC - but this did not affect our overall enjoyment. Perched above the town one could awake each morning to the stunning view - and feel how pleasurable it was to be in such a lovely location.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

I enjoy travelling and having an adventure and want my kids to experience this too. From the beginning Ben promptly answered my email enquires and resolved any concerns I had about bringing a 9 and 7 year old on this holiday. The trip was better than I could have hoped. The group worked out an agenda for the week on Ben's recommendations which included treking, wild water swimming, kayaking, a boat trip and exploring caves and islands. Every activity was wonderful. Ben and Emma took photos along the way and since leaving have shared them with the group which is a bonus for capturing wonderful memories.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

My 7 and 9 year old loved it and so if you are are wondering if the trip is appropriate for children then let me say a definite YES IT IS! Worth bringing food for breakfast on the day after your arrival.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Its difficult to pick out one particular element, as there were so many different experiences that were out of this world: from the warm welcome by our hosts Ben and Emma and dog Coco, to the gorgeous villa with breathtaking terrace and garden and of course there was still the stunning scenery, local culture and amazing hikes, wild swimming and canoeing to take in! But possibly a lazy afternoon wine tasting at local wineries where one particularly colourful vintner Ilya gave us a taste of his singing abilities, invited us to use his swimming pool set amongst the vines and generally gave us a wonderful Montenegrin welcome is high on the list of special moments.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Dont worry about whether you feel fit enough for all the activities and options, Ben and Emma really look after their guests and tailor every element to what people can manage. You will surprise yourself with what you can do and what you experience! Just come prepared for the heat if you travel in peak season!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. All activities were developed with preserving the incredible natural world of Lake Skadar in mind. Our hosts are knowledgeable and mindful of the ecological issues and also the economic issues of the local culture and deliberately develop activities that contribute to the local economy in an appropriate way. They encourage guests to visit the local villages and eat there or engage in local activities such as boat tours run by local companies rather than monopolise guests themselves within a complete package type deal. They are well integrated in to local life and have strong local relationships - this greatly adds to the holiday experience of their guests. I really admire all they are doing to support appropriate development of the area, and their investment in supporting local initiatives that will benefit the area. They are clearly well regarded and respected locally.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

marvellous. A real privelege to gain an insight into a country that might be inaccessible to me as an independent traveller.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Hiking to the waterfalls and swimming in them in Posiliani (possibly awful spelling!)

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Use your free days to explore the costal parts of Montenegro, they are totally different to lake Skadar and you get to see the contrasting areas of Montenegro.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely. Ben and Emma are great, they have learnt the local language and are clearly well respected in the community. I liked that they used local services such as the taxi service that supported local family businesses. The are also very passionate about reducing waste and rubbish in the area.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Great, very enjoyable, it was so calm and peaceful around the lake you felt miles away from everything else and the activities were very manageable making it a lovely relaxing holiday.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Difficult to pick one from a week of fabulous experiences. Lake Skada is stunningly beautiful, Villa Miele is very comfortable, the hiking and kayaking are both great and over a week you get to really experience the area through the eyes of people who know and love it. It is a fantastic holiday

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Take effective insect repellant!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely. The owners do a huge amount for the local community and are obviously very popular with local people. As much as possible, food, activities and business comes from local towns and operators. They are very environmentally conscious and we were all encouraged to be as 'green' as possible during the week.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

A fantastic week for the whole family.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Although it's hard to pinpoint one particular thing, the scenery was stunning. Everytime you thought you'd seen the best Emma or Ben managed to show us something even more jaw droppingly beautiful. Every day was different, from the amazing wild life and birds, to the glorious hidden water pools high in the hills, to the monasteries in the lake, this holiday had everything.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Relax, and be open to new experiences and let Emma and Ben do the worrying........ You won't be disappointed. Bring strong water/land shoes as you'll need them for the river and lake swims. If driving there, stop off at a large supermarket for essentials for the week. Although the local village has a well stocked supermarket it is small so choice is limited. Ensure you have supplies for breakfast on the first morning.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely. We ate with local families and paid them directly. The food was amazing and came straight from their garden or fishing boat. Emma and and Ben also ensured we took great care to ensure we had limited impact on the environment,

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

One of the best I've ever been on and the fact that it's only a few hours from home was icing on the cake. Everything about the holiday exceeded my expectations. Emma and Ben's knowledge of the local area meant we really did get to the 'undiscovered' parts of the region, each one a gem. Their enthusiasm and commitment to this part of Montenegro is infectious and it's clear that they really love this part of the world - with very good reason.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

So many exciting things to see and do in Montenegro! If I have to pick one, it would have to be the well deserved lunch on the Walnut Valley walk. After a morning of a moderate hike in the heat, walking on a hunting trail in a lush green forest, swimming in the refreshing water of the river and climbing up the hill to get to Tanya's place, we were served an abundance of food prepared by a local on the terrace of her house. The vines provided us with the shade we desperately needed. We were welcomed with a homemade lemonade of mint and honey. And loads of traditional dishes! Delicious and priceless!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Use all of your senses to deeply experience the untouched nature of Montenegro! See the 50 shades of green and blue, sent the wild herbs, feel the ice cold water on your skin and taste the delicious fresh vegetables that the land has to offer!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely yes! The local supermarket clearly sells vegetables right of the land of the locals or you could buy your veggies right of one of the little stands along the side of the road. Ben and Emma work together a lot with the locals and have built up personal relations with many of them. The use of the car is kept to a minimum. A lot of the activities involve your own personal energy. It is so much more rewarding to drink a fresh draft beer in a tiny local village after a long climb with the bicycle!

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This holiday has got it all. If you love nature in all it's aspects and you love to put your own effort into getting to know the scenery, this is your holiday! You will have the opportunity to swim in the crystal clear water of wild rivers, relax on the shore of the lake together with the birds and the dragonflies, to walk in untouched forests, to eat the fresh meals in the local village of Virpazar, ... It is incredible and worthwhile the name "undiscovered"!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It was all exciting. Most memorable bit would be difficult to choose but would include Walnut Valley walk and lunch, lunch in the middle of nowhere in the North, staying in a traditional building and village in Durmitor, sampling local food and the real Montenegro, the Monty B sailing trip in Kotor Bay.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Do the Northern extension if you have a sense of adventure and don't get travel sick. Take hiking boots and wet weather jackets if you want to do the North properly. You need to be reasonably fit for the Durmitor extension. Take insect repellant (but it didn't seem to work). Take some little souvenirs from the UK to give to people. We met people who were extremely hospitable and generous despite their poverty and I would like to have had a small gift in my rucksack to leave with them.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent. Although there was a fair amount of travelling we feel we have experienced a taste of real Montenegro, isolated Northern villages, spectacular mountains, lakes and rivers, the hidden gems of the lake skadar area and a little bit of the coast. Special mention to Vuk, who was our guide for the Durmitor extension- he had arranged an excellent and varied itinerary, he worked long days, drove many miles but was always there to provide detailed local and historic information and do his best to ensure we had a good time.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The scenery, Montenegro is a stunning country. Jaw dropping views at every turn.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

May/June is a great month to visit. Embrace the activities and take up the options for lunch where they are available.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, Emma and Ben have clearly invested heavily in their relationship with the local community. As guests of Emma and Ben you will be treated warmly, surely the best testament! Many smaller businesses are benefiting as a result. In terms of enviornmental impact water harvesting, water collection from fresh water spring, compost.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent, would certainly recommend.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Hard to choose there were so many. The kids chose the explore day, with jumping from a bridge into the river and off road driving. I loved the lake boat trip simply stunning, and my wife chose the walnut valley walk, a fabulous lunch prepared in a local village, and swimming in a variety of secret pools. All 4 activity days were great.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Book! Maybe bring walking boots. Be ready to swim lots, but go for it.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, Ben and Emma work hard to reduce the environmental impact, using water from their own spring, although recycling is not huge yet in Montenegro. They work well with Virpazar residents, and I felt our expenditure directly benefitted local residents.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Very highly. The trips took us to amazing places we would never have found on our own and we saw and did things we haven't done before. A fab trip.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

So many it's hard to choose. Every day had something really special about it. If I had to choose one it would be kayaking across the lake, beautifully calm, looking at stunning scenery, with visits to 14th century monasteries thrown in. I was happy to try the kayaking but had no idea I would absolutely love it! Walking through mossy woods carpeted with wild cyclamen, hiking across hills with stunning views of the lake, eating delicious home cooked lunches (you must try the fresh pomegranate juice) in hillside villages, dipping in pools under waterfalls, bird watching (kingfishers, grey, white and yellow herons, grebes and Pygmy cormorants) on the lake in the early morning and gazing up at the stars from the warmth of the hot tub were all memorable too. Oh, and peering under a bush at what we thought might have been a hedgehog but turned out to be a horned viper. And Ben and Emma made all this happen in such a hospitable, friendly and encouraging way.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

It's quite possible with the range of activities on offer that there's something you don't feel able to do, or that unnerves you somewhat. But you'll also probably find yourself doing things you didn't particularly want to do, or didn't think you could do, and enjoying it! Go for it. Sep/Oct is a great time to go, especially if the weather holds. Still beautifully warm, but not too hot to walk without the shade of trees. You also have the beauty of all the wild cyclamen. Bring proper walking boots, they'll be needed as the terrain you walk on varies from scree to huge boulders to slippy wet rocks. As well as more gentle terrains! If you're an avid tea drinker remember to bring it with you.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Most definitely. Ben and Emma are keen spokespeople for Lake Skadar and tirelessly work towards promoting and protecting its stunning beauty. They work with local people who provide lunches on the walks and activities beyond the package deal, such as bird watching and boat trips. They actively discourage use of bottled water, encouraging collection of water for use in the villa from their own spring. Our bird watching boat trip on the lake brought home to us what an uphill struggle this is. The pollution from plastic bottles and plastic bags in some areas, not obvious from the roads, was truly shocking.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The best holiday we've had for quite a while. Montenegro is a beautiful country, well worth exploring, especially in the very capable and enthusiastic hands of Ben and Emma.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The whole experience was fabulous. The highlight was spotting a Horned Viper whilst out on a trek with Emma ! Some fantastic bird life, especially Kingfisher on Lake Skarda (no I'm not a twitcher!). Chilling in the hot tub under the stars.......

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Unless you all know each other be prepared to mix and be open minded as you share kitchen and living facilities. All worked well for us. Intimacy is probably something you'll have to live without for a week!!!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, Ben & Emma cerrainley introduce you to places and people you would not ordinarily meet, One particular walk you are prepared a banquet by a charming family in their home. Unbeatable.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Top marks and I hope Ben & Emma who clearly have a long term plan are successful. Lets hope the other locals and government don't spoil the beauty of the area with their lack of rubbish clearing skills.

We had a beautifully sunny day - perfect for kayaking! We did a 8km kayak on Lake Skadar and had a lovely lunch with a couple of trips to the lake Monasteries.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Remember to bring walking trousers, light quick-dry towels, a backpack and tea bags!

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes; Ben & Emma were clearly trying to be sustainable and were trying to support the locals and the local area as much as they were able.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Excellent!
