Well what can I say about our holiday??? It was the most amazing time away with my son. We made so many memories that I will cherish for always. The hotel was wonderful, the breakfast was plentiful and great selection. I enjoyed a swim in the lovely pool and the jacuzzi. The trips put on were absolutely fantastic. The desk staff, boat crew and guide fir the jeep land trip were all so attentive and knowledgable. We did so much besides like seeing the volcanic caves, the beautiful gardens and war museum. The food on the island was delicious. But the pinnacle of our trip and the reason why we came was to see the sperm whale. And boy did we see one. A beautiful moment for my son. So thank you to you Amanda and everyone else for helping this dream become real. Best Wishes Emma and Adam.Lyn Acton review 15 Jul 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We came across a feeding frenzy, a huge pod of dolphins, about 10 whales and seabirds all feeding off a huge shoal of fish! The captain said it was the first time he’d seen it in 25 years!2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Get ready to book more boat trips!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I think the way the island deals with the wildlife is excellent. The boats are not allowed out in overwhelming numbers and keep a safe and respectful distance from the animals. The marine biologists are very knowledgeable and I think it gave the travellers a great respect for the sea and the wildlife.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The whale watching boat trips run by the whale watching operator were outstanding. Each one was different and the company was professional and ethical and respectful of the encounters with wildlife. The Marine Biologists on the boat were knowledgeable, helpful and enthusiastic. Cetacean watching was the reason for choosing this holiday and we were not disappointed. We enjoyed the amazing scenery of Sao Miguel and had an excellent visit to the Priolo Interpretation Centre and learnt about the work done to save the Azores Bullfinch once one of the rarest species in the world. We managed to find the bird too! The Casa da Galaria was a great place to stay too.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
There can never be too many boat trips, sightings are almost guaranteed and no trip is the same. We took advantage of hiring a car to explore the island. Away from Ponta Delgada the roads are quiet and of good condition.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
To some degree we feel that there were benefits for local people, we ate at locally run restaurants . The two hotels we stayed at had ecological friendly products and measures to prevent excessive uses of water etc. The boat trips promoted eco-tourism and the conservation of cetaceans (providing employment for a team of local Marine Biologists) as well as thanking clients for choosing to see animals in their natural environment and not in captivity.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
The holiday rated as one of our best. The organisation from the start in the UK from Responsible Travel and the tour operator was excellent and continued whilst we were in the Azores regards changing hotels, airport transfers etc. We visited many scenic places and also managed time for some relaxation between our boat trips and wider exploration. Ponta Delgada has a wide array of places to eat, which were of good quality and very reasonably priced. All in all a great destination.Gary Hitchen review 9 Jul 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We had amazing trips out on the boat and saw dolphins, whales , turtles, sword fish and the highlight was seeing a family of Orcas including a newly born! The Azores is a beautiful island that felt extremely safe, clean and friendly.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Rucksacks are essential, you will need some layers and lightweight jacket for the boat trips. You literally can get all seasons while out on the boat! We had a day off the boat after two consecutive days out in the boat and this felt needed with two young children. We purposively chose a hotel with a pool so they had entertainment in between trips. We found the morning boat trips worked better for us, it was slightly cooler and we’d had a good breakfast. It was also a little less busy. The afternoon boat trips we tended to not have lunch and felt a bit ropey on the boat. Take anti sickness medication with you, its worth taking it before you get on the boat if you think you might get travel sickness. Good shoes for the boat, it’s nice to sit down but you’ll want to be able to move around the boat and it can be quite bumpy and slippy if it has rained. It doesn’t rain for long usually so don’t rush straight into the boat, put your waterproof on sit it out!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Absolutely, from restaurants, hotels to the trips out, locals tended to be the sole people employed. The boat trips were always considerate of the environment and conservation.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent. It was lovely to have it all organised for us and everything was perfect. We had different criteria as we travelled with older parents and had children from age 3-16 so required different needs. This was all sorted, nothing was too much trouble. The kids loved the holiday, the balance of trips and rest/relaxing days were just right. The Azores is just beautiful and we’d love to return in the future. Thank youColin Smith review 23 May 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The amazing views/experiences - Not just the whale and dolphin tours but the Island tour as well2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Book trips at the start of the holiday and look at car rental also. This gave me the ideal balance of flexibility and independence. My trip on the first day was cancelled due to the weather but there was plenty of time to rearrange. By the last couple of days on my trip when I had the car, I had a good enough idea of the Island that I knew what areas I wanted to travel to.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Absolutely. To do the Whale and Dolphin watching trips with Marine Biologists was an experience in itself. To get their perspective but also share in their enjoyment and enthusiasm when we saw something out of the ordinary. The island tours allowed me to respect and understand the natural environment.4. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Whalewatching2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Don't book too many trips in case there is a whale watching postponement. Try to see as much of the island as you can and use the local weather webcams to decide where to visit on the day (if you're hiring a car).3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
In so far as our spending benefitted the local economy. I'm not sure that it reduced environmental impact or supported conservation per se. I suppose our interest in doing this holiday was dependant on coming to a clean environmentally sound place where conservation was at the forefront of what we came to see.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We really enjoyed the holiday, the weather changed our itinerary somewhat but that was to be expected. We would have appreciated knowing that had we booked a week or so later, we could have done a trip to swim with wild dolphins, so that was a little disappointing. The hotel could have done with some healthier breakfast options, but overall we thought it was excellent.Read the operator's response here:
Thank you so much for your wonderful comments and we are so glad you have such an enjoyable holiday seeing whales and dolphins in the wild. Our partners stopped offering trips to swim with wild dolphins this year, so we do not offer this anymore to our guests and it is not advertised. We all felt the increase in volume of tourists visiting the islands and wanting to do the activity was not sustainable without negatively impacting the dolphins natural behaviour. In the past with smaller numbers of tourists it was deemed ok. Now we prefer to watch them swimming so close in the bow wave of the boats through the crystal clear water

You don’t need a big coat from the UK, a lightweight waterproof will do - saves on your packing! You can get by easily using contactless bank cards but a little cash in euros is useful for small shopping items.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
A tricky question in some ways! It looks like tourism is growing fast in the Azores, I hope the number of tourists is capped to preserve the high quality of the natural environment and resources; our guide to Sete Cidades said the numbers of people visiting were booked in to prevent too many on the mountain and small roads which is good to know. Whale watching tours are ran by staff with relevant marine biology qualifications as well as excellent language skills, they kept a respectful distance to the whales etc we went to watch, always approaching from the rear of family groups which was good. The hotel was very good.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Seeing and being able to photograph a blue whale2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Remember wildlife is unpredictable as is the weather. Be aware that humidity especially at this time of year can be high so bring plenty of spare clothes as drying wet ones can be very difficult. Also sea conditions can make it unsafe to go out so don't set expectations too high everything is weather dependent.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The manner in which we observed the cetaceans helped the conservation of cetacecans. The whale watching company certainly operated within the marine code for observation, unfortunately the same cannot be said of another unrealted boat operator. Eating locally helped build the local economy and benefited the local people.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent - need I say more! Gald you didn't ask me to rate the weather! Don't bother booking trips to other places on the island - hire a car and explore it yourself!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Paying to go whale watching helped the marine biologists to collect important data for monitoring cetaceans so in that case, yes. For reducing environmental impacts however, any flights negate that, and the boats were diesel engine.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was a truly wonderful experience.Read the operator's response here:
Dear Ben
So glad you had such a wonderful experience with exceptional sightings at sea.
You suggested people rent cars and explore the island. Yes that is an option but as the roads
are small and parking at popular spots is limited, a lot of cars on the road can cause traffic
problems ( already happening in high season ) and also is not very environmentally friendly.
Ponta Delgada has tiny narrow cobbled streets and no parking so driving in the city is difficult.
Our tours in the mini van mean one vehicle on the road for 8-12 people rather than 4-6 cars.
The tour guides give excellent info and take you to special places most tourists do not know
about!!

The were many parts of my holiday that I enjoyed but the 3 half days out in the boat, for dolphin and Whale watching was the best. On day one I saw a Humpback Whale, Bottle nosed Dolphins and Common Dolphins. On day two and three, I saw pods of the above dolphins, as well as a pod (around 12) of Altantic Spotted dolphins!2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be prepared for changeable weather, so pack a little bit of everything and if you love seafood, you will not be disappointed.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
My holiday benefited local people, in terms of tourism bringing money to Sao Miguel. However, I felt there was a lot of expectation for people to buy bottled water, which meant a lot of empty plastic bottles in recycling bins, rather than people re-using them. Also, conserving the beauty of the hot springs at Furnas, should be considered, as it did look like taking one big communal bath.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was a wonderful experience, as I got to sea marine life, as nature intended and the walking trails gave me time and space to enjoy my surroundings and the beauty of Sao Miguel.Jennifer Baxter review 12 Jun 2023
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We were really spoilt with the variety of wildlife, I lost count of the amount of sperm whales and calfs we saw. There were also 4 species of dolphins, a sei whales, turtles, a sunfish, flying fish and most memorably, I was particularly lucky to see 4 fin whales on my birthday.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
For any vegans, we definitely benefited from having a self catering apartment where we could cook our own food. Our tour leader Amanda did a great job at arranging options for us for our group meals but you won't find too many options while out and about available on Pico without some real effort. It was also good to have an apartment for our own washing machine and heater with clothes dryer so we didn't need to pack too many boat - friendly outfits (although the boat trip provider, Futurismo does supply extra big waterproofs that fit over your clothes if you need them). The upgrade to a balcony apartment was definitely worth it for chilling out with a nice glass if wine and a mountain view.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We had a couple of visits to local craftspeople and the opportunity to buy from them, to hear about local history and sample some traditional food and wine - which was excellent. The boat trips, while clearly the only way to see ocean wildlife, did ultimately raise some issues for us about where the balance lies between providing an exciting tourist experience and respecting the animals. A tricky one for all wildlife holiday providers, and not a criticism of Responsible Travel. It would be interesting to know how much tourism money feeds in to conservation research/work.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Overall we had an incredible experience with the wildlife, our bonus day on land exploring the caves and vineyards also added to a well rounded trip of the island.Read the operator's response here:
Thanks for your feedback and so happy you had such wonderful encounters at sea and enjoyed the Island. Yes vegan food is available but limited. Sao Miguel Island has 2 vegan restaurants now. We give about 5% of holiday payment towards conservation and research. The presentation and Q&A with the whale researchers received donations to their work from us.

Get as much information as possible before you go especially about getting around. Use the, in our case, very helpful hotel staff to help with booking trips/taxis.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes local people benefit from tourist industry but are keen to keep the balance between tourism and the natural environment. Don’t think it reduced environmental impacts but whale watching was responsibly managed to avoid disturbing the animals. Also you learn a lot about animals and the island as you travel around which makes you appreciative of the natural beauty of the island.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Take sea sickness tablets before you board and take more layers to keep you warm than you think you'll need. We knew this having worked on boats but some passengers on the trip didn't know this.3. I think the company are an excellent organisation, employing lots of bright local young people. I was really impressed with their efficiency and friendliness - top marks for that. However I think where they could improve is in their interaction with Cetaceans at sea. I've worked on many scientific studies of whales at sea and some of the zodiac drivers were on occasion getting too close and surrounding cetaceans. It's just a small adjustment. Overall they were pretty good and the catamaran captain was very good.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Great. Loved the Azores. Whale tours were lovely. We did one of the land tours...it was fine but a bit touristy for us so we decided to not go on the second tour. The only real grumble was with our hotel room...the hotel was lovely and I had paid for an upgrade to a slightly nicer hotel but the room we were given was at the very top of the building tucked under the eaves with no view. Given that we stayed for 5 nights I think we earned a better room..so that was very disappointing. Hence the 4 rather than 5 star reviewRead the operator's response here:

Be aware that there may not be many whales around. (We thought that the Azores were a major stopping point in the migration route and that there would be quite a few whales around, with reasonable certainty of seeing whales. We were surprised that it was so uncertain.) For bird-watching and nature conservation, Ana Mendoça was superb. We very much liked Hotel do Colegio.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Whale watching helped to end whale killing. But they must be careful not to allow too many boats in the same place at the same time, and need to enforce rules about not getting too close to the whales. More explication about the whales would have been welcome on the boat.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Very enjoyable, and satisfactory because we did see whales. But the risk of not seeing any was much greater than we realised beforehand.Milo Owen review 22 Nov 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We stayed in Furnas, at the Terra Nostra Garden hotel - the gardens are amazing and well worth the time to explore. Then we moved to Ponta Delgada for the rest of the holiday, to take some trips out to see and in jeeps. The trips in search of whales and dolphins were extremely good and I doubt they ever have a trip where they don't find something to see. Over the course of three trips, we saw five species of dolphin, at one point being in amongst a huge group feeding on a shoal of fish, with birds diving in as well, and on our last trip out saw pilot whales and the islands resident sperm whales. Mission accomplished!2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
If you're taking trips out to sea, remember a hat, a coat, and your sun cream - the sun is brutal on the water and even on a warm day, the boats turn on the speed. If you're looking for places to eat in Ponta Delgada, take notice of the reviews as some of the eateries are not that great, but equally there are a few amazing restaurants, such as Michel's, Casa Marisca, Sao Pedro, and the A Terra in the Octant Hotel.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I'm so impressed by how clean Sao Miguel is, we saw road crews cleaning and cutting back greenery, and everything seemed to be looked after well. I'm not sure about environmental impacts, but we were told about varous projects going on which prove that the Azores take conservation seriously. It seems the whale watching boats also observe and take photos to improve knowledge and awareness of the sealife around the island. And the restaurants all serve local produce, whcih is extremely good.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Definitely a five star holiday. If we go back, it would be to see different species of cetacean visiting at another time of the year, and we would probably choose a different hotel in Ponta Delgada - but still spend a few days at Furnas for the gardens and the thermal pools. Yes, five stars.Barbara Eisner review 13 Jun 2022

Tourism is undoubtedly the most valuable income for the Azores, it provides employment for many and it was particularly important following two years of covid. The local people were without exception welcoming, helpful and extremely friendly, from bus drivers to shopkeepers to people in the street happy to give directions to tourists looking lost. It’s as if the whole island has been on a courtesy course, it was absolutely lovely. The boat trips take great care not to crowd the animals they are watching and keep a good distance, conserving the environment for the animals.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This was a fabulous holiday. My adult son and I shared an apartment at the Antilia Hotel and it worked brilliantly. We each had our own space and the Hotel was central to everything we needed. Rui our guide was phenomenal, his passion and knowledge of the cetaceans shone through all week and the crew on the rib were fantastic too, both knowledgeable and engaging. Just book this holiday, you won't be disappointed. Although we did not see the blue whales, we came very close, but bad weather halted our search, but I felt very privileged to have seen all the other cetaceans and wildlife that we saw.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I think because Pico Island is not touristy at all, I think any money spent whether it be on the boat trips, the local cafes, restaurants or shops, definitely supported the local people and conservation because the money was not benefitting big national companies and conglomerates where the local people and environments do not benefit. I was also impressed with the boat operator as they would always give any animals that we came across the space and respect they deserved.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Tourism is very important to the Azores and the last 2 years has affected livelihoods, so yes to taking your tourist dollar to be spent here in local businesses and tour companies. All air travel has environmental impact but your smaller choices as in where to stay and how to make greener choices like considering staying longer and flying less are something to consider. I’d have liked more education (on the shared vessel) in how passengers can support cetacean conservation like small steps to reduce your carbon footprint, avoid single use plastics etc so that all passengers, including those on short excursions or from cruise ships might gain more awareness of threats to marine mammals and what WE can do to take action. The local tour company carries out research which is shared in academic papers and studies; and they share findings and data with global academics, this adding to the bodies of knowledge about cetaceans. Their research supports conservation and informs their tours.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Dear Joel,
Great to hear you had such great sightings of Blue whales on Pico Island. Our guests come to the remote islands for nature, wildlife and peace where tourism is quite small scale. Sorry you were bored and questioned the number of days you were on holiday. Having taken this trip on your own, we did tell you when booking about our small group tours on Pico but the dates did
not work for you. Most solo travellers prefer being with a group so they can easily socialise and make their own fun. Some of your sea trips were cancelled due to bad weather and I understand you rented a car and did your own tour, however the islands are not full of lively restaurants, bars and clubs with a vibrant social scene, so sorry you were bored. We did give you a guide to Pico with various restaurant options and the guides can recommend their favourites, there are at least 4 restaurants a short distance by foot or taxi from the boat base. I sincerely hope you have some great memories of the nature and the whales, your
photo of a Blue Whale tail was Amazing and it is rare to see their tails! We will certainly ensure single travellers are aware that if they don’t travel in a group they need to ensure they have a busy itinerary or be happy to be doing their own thing with company on the activities only and with the support of the guides on the boats and land tours.

São Miguel (and Ponta Delgada in particular) is heavily dependent on tourism, so yes - we definitely felt that the locals appreciated our presence after a year of little or no business due to Covid. The whale watching companies highlight the scientific research that goes on year-round, and the students and biologists on board take photos and research notes on the whales and dolphins encountered on each trip, so it seems that the tours help with education and conservation efforts.4. Dear Deborah
Thanks so much for your excellent review and I am glad your holiday was not disrupted by Covid issues and that you had a wonderful time in the Azores. It is a very special place indeed.
I wanted to respond to your comments about the schedule. Usually there is a variation in how the activities are spaced and guests have a choice in that. However, if there is any adverse sea conditions you would have land tours instead of trips to sea. Also as a result of the pandemic and reduced capacity the activity providers have other issues to contend with in terms of minimum numbers on tours and the tour schedules as well as weather disruption. I am so pleased you were able to take all the activities you had booked.
Wishing you the very best

Spread out your tips to sea in order to : allow some recovery time in between. It is very tiring being out on a rib if the sea is at all choppy. and, to give yourselves the best chance of good sightings as if the sea is rough it is much harder to spot anything. Dear Carole
Thank you so much for positive your review and I am so sorry that you missed the first 2 days of your holiday due to flight disruption by the local airline. However good to know you managed to catch up all your dolphin and whale watching trips so that you did not miss anything. We can of course assist if you want to claim compensation from the airline for the disruption they caused.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The anticipation and then the excitement of actually seeing the sperm and pilot whales that honoured us with their presence!2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be prepared for the heat and humidity in the Azores (early June). Book a land trip - San Miguel is a beautiful island. Be patient when you go whale and dolphin watching, they aren't waiting to see you but you'll not be disappointed by whatever you see. If you are vegan or vegetarian, you'll have to shop around a bit for suitable restaurants (there's only one actual veggie place - Rotas, which is brilliant but very small, you'd be best booking. Look it up on Happy Cow). This is a wonderful holiday!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We felt that the operator was completely dedicated to conservation of the whales and dolphins and very respectful of them and their environment. Tourism is an important part of life in the Azores and therefore a holiday there is definitely helping the local economy.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was brilliant! Thanks!Siobhan Chapman review 8 Jun 2018

Try to spend as much time as you can out on the water to maximise your chance of sightings.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We appreciated the way in which the whale watching trips were also being used to record information about the local populations of whales and dolphins.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We were on the cat and a huge gasp went up from everyone on board; a fin whale had swum in front of the boat and opened its mouth out of the water to feed. It was only a split second but that sight is engraved on my memory. My partner didn't see it, he was looking the other way at the time.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Think very carefully about going on the rib. The sea conditions change during the trip; we went out in fairly calm conditions but it got rougher on the way back. People even sitting on the back were complaining but the skipper explained that he had to get us back and he couldn't help the waves. I was wishing I hadn't booked the rib for the following day- but that trip was much calmer, just an exhilarating ride.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We got the impression that tourism is important for the local economy, especially during the land trips to the tea factory etc. The second rib ride ended up being a litter picking exercise; the skipper fished out a rope, plastic crate, and bucket out of the ocean.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was fantastic, wish I had booked more land trips. The guides on the boat and mini bus were so knowledgable about everything. Their English was excellent and they answered all our questions. Our hotel was 3 star but we couldn't work out why it wasn't rated 4 star.Read the operator's response here:

Going out to sea in a small RIB to watch the dolphins and the whales.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I think that there was good consideration given to trying to protect the environment and supporting conservation. However, with increased direct flights to the Azores from England, America etc. I worry about the long term consequences for the islands in the future and how they will cope wth the increased number of tourists4. Achieving a long awaited goal of going to The Azores2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be responsible! The tourist industry is relatively new and growing fast. They are already having to cope with litter etc from careless tourists. They are very proud of their paradise3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes - local people work in the tourist industry. The environmental impact is growing as tourism does. This summer flights from New York will increase from 1 a week to 5. Some support of conservation - we had marine biologist with us when whale watching so there was an educational element. However the boats could be a bit invasive and will only grow in number as tourism increases.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We had a fabulous time. The Azores completely lived up and exceeded my expectations. Delightful, kind people, a beautiful and safe environment. Great food and wine. I'm so glad I went this year. Frustrating how good everyone's English was - no chance to practice Portuguese...3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
A little squeamish about the whale-watching, to be honest - there are a lot of boats following around not that many whales, and the noise of the motors can't be good for them. we did see a couple of other tour operators also not sticking to the rules re: keeping distance from the animals.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Read the operator's response here:
The boat company we use does follow the guidelines which restrict numbers of boats around the whales and the required distance to be kept from the whales. However when other operators do not, it can indeed create disturbances for these creatures.
We ask all our guests to report any boats which are not following the regulations - we do the reporting ourselves if our staff witness the guidelines being breached. Any time this is done with a strong personal testimony and photos it goes a long way to ensuring the culprits receive a fine which is an effective deterrent. Operators can also have their licence revoked if they persistently ignore good practice.

I did wonder if our 6 year old would be a bit too young but she really enjoyed it and can't wait to go back to school to tell everyone about all the different types of dolphins we saw. The land tour of the island was also well worth doing: swimming in natural thermal water, having a traditional lunch, visiting a tea plantation, drinking natural spring water straight from the ground, and plenty of beautiful scenery.Dee Searle review 30 Jun 2017

The whale and dolphin trips. The operator and their local agent were great: friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The best experience was the Zodiac boat, when we got up close and personal with a huge pod of common dolphins (including some new-borns) and with three fin whales, who stayed with us for ages, plus flying fish and Cory's shearwaters. We also saw sperm and humpback whales, common dolphins and some Risso's dolphins from the catamaran.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Several times seeing Blue Whales starting their deep dive with flukes in the air. We saw Blue whales, Sperm whales, Fin whales galore and a solitary Humpback whale which also did a "flukes in the air" dive. We heard on the long towed hydrophone the "song" (actually clicking) of the 20 strong Sperm whale pod socialising while escorted by bottle-nose dolphins. We frequently saw common dolphins and one spectacular display of striped dolphins playing alongside while the boat was travelling at speed. One loggerhead turtle was seen and Cory Shearwaters frequently gave impressive flying displays around the boat.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be sure of your ability not to be sea-sick. Take appropriate medication if in any doubt. The motion of the catamaran on which you will spend about seven hours a day can be fairly uneven although completely safe. Take warm clothing, waterproofs, good head covering that will stay on in a stiff wind and, perversely, high factor sun block. Even on showery days the Ultra Violet index was 8 (on a scale up to 10). Expect to cover your face in sun block then put on a sensible head covering and a "buff" which is a thing you can buy locally and leaves one looking like an old fashioned bank robber wearing a mask. You may scoff at others looking like this on the first day but you won't by the second day. Follow the example of the crew. Cover up or burn at sea off the Azores in May.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All staff were local (the resident cetologist was American by birth but a local by virtue of very long residence). Strict adherence to the code of conduct governing responsible whale watching was evident at all times.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Outstanding. Our expectations were far exceeded. All arrangements from the airport on arrival back to the airport for departure were faultless. The resident cetologist and Jairo (the captain) could not have been pleasanter and more helpful. The accommodation in the Hotel Do Canal was first class and their breakfasts were memorable and welcome before a full day at sea. The two group meals included were excellent examples of local cuisine.Richard Casburn review 20 Jul 2017

Beautiful island with ideal temperatures for walking, hiking and surfing. May rain a bit but usually short lasting. Food is very affordable and prices are considerably lower than in the United Kingdom. Whale spotting is good and it is best to select a small operator who is likely to do that bit extra for you.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Best to book your own travel, accommodation and activities. Hiring a car is easy and a good way to see the island. Choose your whale watching operator carefully as big operators are less personal.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Benefits to the local people can be maximised if you book the holiday directly. If the locals get more from tourism, they can afford to reduce the volume of visitors which in turn would benefit the environment. Travel undoubtedly has a negative impact on the environment but one hopes that a right balance is struck between conserving nature and improving local conditions.4. I loved everything about my holiday to the Azores but the whale watching is why I wanted to go there, it did not disappoint. Thank you so much for your wonderful review below, so glad you had such an amazing experience with the dolphins in the Azores.
Many of our guests are fine with the mask and snorkel that are supplied and often try on a few different ones to get the best fit which is important ( nothing worse than dolphins beneath you and a mask full of water obscuring your vision!). Some people do bring their own gear and snorkeling fins can be taken if you are confident with them , although often not needed.
Waterproof jackets are handy on the whale watching boats or on land tours but yes are supplied on the swim boats.
Hope to see you again either in the Azores or our program in Egypt, you are most welcome!!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The most memorable part of the holiday was, without a doubt, seeing the dolphins and whales in their natural environment. The dolphins swam right under and past the boat, also leading it at times! Swimming with the dolphins was also thrilling! They really are such amazing creatures! We saw 3 types of dolphins - bottle nose, common and Atlantic spotted, and a fin whale. Also the land tours to the volcanic crater lakes, hot springs and botanical gardens were great too!2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
When you swim with the dolphins you go out on the smaller boats, only take the bare minimum of what you need, in a waterproof bag. The floor of the boat gets wet and that is where the bags are kept. Practice with a snorkel before hand, in the ocean it's not always as easy as when you may have previously used one. Put on LOTS of sun cream!! We had 3 trips to swim with the dolphins and I think this is a must. Although we saw dolphins on every trip, I did not always see them when I was in the water. The more times you go, the more confident you feel in the water and the greater your chances of swimming with them.Definitely book any land tours you want to do before you get there, we didn't, and although we did manage to get on some, they were very busy and we had to reshuffle some of our swim and whale watching days to make it work.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I felt the company who ran the swims, whale watching and land tours were extremely well organised and experienced. The way we looked for the dolphins and whales was very sensitively done, there was no chasing or harassing the animals - it was completely on the animals terms at all times and carried out with respect. I was very impressed. Also the staff were all very knowledgable and able to answer all questions, as well as provide very interesting info throughout the trips, they were great!4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
This was a fab holiday and experience. To experience these animals in their natural environment was just amazing. We also saw flying fish, turtles, 3 types of dolphins and a fin whale - wow!!Mary Gardner review 21 Jun 2015
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The best parts were the 3 whale-watching trips where we saw many sperm whales and several different types of dolphin, and also a trip to Furnas where we spent an hour or so in the hot pool there. Worth a visit, and the gardens are lovely.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Take advantage of the trips on offer, to see as much of the island as you can as the scenery is spectacular. The local travel guides are very knowledgable and provide a lot of background information on the island3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The whale-watching trips were careful not to get too close to the whales or disrupt their activities. I am sure the local economy is benefitting from the tourist trade and helping local people and employment.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Very memorable trip, all the locals we met were extremely nice and helpful and we were very lucky with our whale and dolphin sightings.colin wilkie review 16 Jun 2015
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Seeing Sperm Whales in the Atlantic Ocean2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Make sure you do take a water-proof bag to protect your camera/phone etc when on the open rib boats. A plastic carrier is probably not sufficient3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All services employed local people. The Azores seemed generally environmentally sensitive.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
A good holiday that delivered most of the time.Shirley Keyworth review 28 May 2015
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The boat trips and sighting dolphins and whales.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Book as many trips as you can afford to ensure sightings, but you do have to be prepared not to see anything.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I feel all of the above things.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Whales, whales and more whales!2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
It is not as warm as we expectged, in May - so take warm gear, especially for out on the boats3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, definitely supported the whales, giving lots of information, but not sure about the trip to Furnas - the food was disgusting. Same tour but a sandwich lunch would have been much better.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Fabulous. The tour operators were awesome.Claire Ashton review 20 Apr 2015
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Seeing three Fin Whales. The group included an adolescent who, being curious, came quite close to the boat followed by the adults; we got a great view. We also saw Hump Back Whale and both Common and Bottle Nosed Dolphins. The knowledgable Marine Biologists on the boat added to the overall experience. I cannot recommend the team highly enough, they showed great respect for the animals whilst providing a brilliant Whale and Dolphin watching experience.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Make sure you bring waterproofs and a towel as the weather in the Azores is very changeable and you are likely to get wet. Equally bring a hat and sun screen as you will get burnt when the sun is out. Don't confine yourself to just one trip, there is something different every day and the animals are sometimes hard to find. Do make time to see the interior of the Island. There are a number of dormant volcanoes that have rainwater lakes that are quite beautiful. If you are not hiring a car you can book trips with this company locally; we did this and again found the guides hugely knowledgable about the geological formations of the island, flora and fauna as well as the cultural make up of the Azores.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The whale watching company were very keen to give information about the very negative aspects of keeping whales and dolphins in captivity ,also the environmental impact of human waste, for example plastic, on marine life. San Miguel has many fine, locally owned and run restaurants that provide excellent Azorian and Portuguese food and, fortunately, there are hardly any chain shops so most tourism does genuinely seem to benefit the local population. Our hotel was very "corporate" and, once inside, you could be any where in the world. I do not know if it is locally owned but it did feel like a chain. That said we were not in it much and both the room and service were very good.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip; the people, animals and islands were a joy. The travel company were highly efficient and our itinerary was delivered faultlessly.Barbara Moinet review 5 May 2015

Seeing Bottlenose Dolphins up close2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Take plenty of wet weather gear! We would also recommend hiring a car to explore the island and give you a bit more freedom. Car hire, if booked through the hotel, is very reasonable.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I would like to think so4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was a relaxing holiday and once we got there it was cheap to eat out and visit sites. We were disappointed that the hotel was advertised as 'every room has a balcony with sea views' whereas in fact only half do and we had the embarrassment of having to ask to be moved as the room we were given was tiny with no balcony and a view over the car park. The hotel staff were helpful, but it was awkward nonetheless and meant repacking our cases so they could move them for us once another room became available. We suggest that this is changed in the brochure as it gives a false impression. Poor weather all week meant that one of our whale watching trips was cancelled, but that's just the luck of the draw.Read the operator's response here:
Dear Barbara
I am glad you enjoyed your holiday and really sorry you were not given the room we had confirmed for you which was reserved with hotel. This is a very unusual situation and in all other cases our guests are given the room that is described on their voucher and confirmed with the reservations department.
We have addressed this matter with the hotel and will ensure it does NOT occur again for future guests, so thank you for informing us. Also if you had contacted us, we would have taken care of asking the reception to change your room on arrival which is part of our customer care and may have spared you some inconvenience and been less awkward. Sadly, we were not aware of the problem until you wrote this email, so we were not able to respond and help.
Thanks again for letting us know and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience
kind regards

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Being with enviromentally passionate likeminded people & seeing all the marine life especially the blue whale .2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Remember the Azores is in the Atlantic not the med'. No beaches , no 24/7 drinking / music, perfect for nature lovers. The weather is very changable. Pack a waterproof fleece & warm layers. I wore my wellies ( beginning of June ) most days.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. I would highly reccomend Serge & his team as the only people to go with.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
11 / 10 if you wish to see the marine life with environmentally respectful people.Holiday Reviews
