1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We booked a 10-day safari with the tour operator, with an additional three safari days added to our itinerary (Aug/Sept 2023). The trip was so amazing that it is impossible to choose what was most memorable part. We had one safari where we saw all five "big five" animals (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo) within two hours. The safari camps and lodges were amazing, with friendly staff and delicious food.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

I feel that each lodge we stayed at was making an effort with conservation and local impacts, with more work to be done in the future.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Seeing the animals in their natural habitat. Them letting us into their space. We came so close to lions, giraffes and elephants especially, it was a privilege to be part of their world. Our guides and rangers made us feel totally safe and were very respectful to the animals that we came across. Going on a game drive twice a day and not knowing what we were going to come across.....whether it was a pride of lions wallowing by a waterhole, or a tiny chameleon hidden in a tree, it was all thrilling and amazing. Having breakfast by the Oliphants River with hippos in the background was magical.We set a camera trap and seeing the different animals on film was enlightening. There were so many whales in Hermanus we were overwhelmed, especially seeing a Southern Right Whale breaching and another lob-tailing at least 20 times! We had lunch in a cave on the beach with the tide coming in and 4 whales passed by us in the water......perfect! We fell in love with the rock hyrax ( dassies)- they are so cute and amusing.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Don't get a fixation on finding The Big 5. Every animal was worth seeing from big elephants to the rare sighting of an aardvark. The thrill was in finding a footprint and following it to wherever it led. Take plenty of warm clothes for the morning game drives and go on every game drive that you can possibly do. Binoculars are a must. Enjoy the food because there is a lot of it and it's delicious!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All the guides and trackers were from the local area and were very experienced and knowledgeable about the game reserves and the animals and their habitats. All 3 reserves supported conservation, we saw evidence of rhinos having had their horns removed to avoid poachers, we did camera trapping for the Ingwe Leopard Research project, and the trucks followed paths through the reserves rather than going through the bush to avoid destroying the habitat unnecessarily. All housekeeping staff and transfer drivers were local, and the reserves used local produce for the meals.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
This holiday exceeded our expectations. Every transfer went smoothly, communication was excellent. All the lodges were clean, and beautifully run. At no time did we feel unsafe or uncomfortable.Brendan O review 5 Sep 2023

The whole holiday was an incredible experience. The most exciting part was seeing the big cats - Leopards, Lions, Cheetah up close in their wild environment, so amazing. But it wasn’t just the big 5, it was all of the flora and fauna, with the beauty of the birds being a big surprise. In particular the people we met at the lodges - staff, guide, tracker and other guests - and the conversation about the context of the safari, the reserves and the animals will stay with us for a long time alongside the pictures.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Practically, it can be cold in the mornings and evenings at this time of year, and then quite hot during the day so layers are required for all the game drives - you go from coat, hat and gloves to t-shirt and shorts through out the day. From an experience perspective, the big 5 are the main attraction but don’t forget all the other animals that you can see - keep a track of them all. At the Nzumba Lodge they provided a list of animals and birds that we were able to use during the whole trip to record what we saw. Finally, talk to the guides, ask them questions, tell them what you are interested in and they will do their best to find it and you will have some fascinating conversations.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We talked to the guides and staff at the lodges involved in the research on Leopards sponsored and supported by the tour operator and understood how we can help both publicise this and also provide financial support to conserve the leopards in the wild.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
A very special experience. This was our first Safari and the tour operator organised 4 different lodges in 4 different game reserves, all very different experiences, across 11 days, completing it with 3 days at Victoria Falls. The different types of lodges from glamping style to spa hotel gave a real breadth of experience. The four different reserves gave us different landscapes to experience the fauna and flora of the wider Kruger National Park. We saw the “big 5” in the first few days, but it wasn’t just about that, it was seeing all the animals in different contexts, the range and beauty of the birds was an unexpected pleasure, learning about the history and rationale for the parks and the people we met, fellow guests, guides, lodge staff that made it a really special holiday. Carol and Joanne at the tour operator were always available helping us plan and deal with issues on the ground, the local staff seamlessly getting us from one location to another. To try different lodges in different areas. The amazing Rukiya and Waterbuck lodges were close together but very different and both amazing. Don't bother booking a Hot Air Balloon flight with Sun Catcher.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Despite the noticeable use of plastic water bottles especially the use of Plastics on aircraft. I did feel that we were making a positive contribution to conservation efforts especially at Rukiya the local communities.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Where do I begin, it was so wonderful and everything I wanted, just being able to spend time observing the wildlife of South Africa in a variety of settings and staying in small lodges and camps. Seeing all the animals and birds, large and small, I had dreamed of and so many more at such close range and quite unperturbed by our presence in the truck. I travelled alone and was lucky to join up with 2 other couples on the trip as we got on really well and frequently were the only guests in the lodges and on the drives. After the initial shock of waking so early I loved being up at 5:00 am every day to see the sunrise and hear the bush come to life, and then again in the afternoons to drive until the light faded at sunset and then to see the nocturnal animals or to just sit in the truck with the lights off and look up at the amazing dark African starry skies - with the milky way so clear. Learning from the guides and trackers about animal behaviour and watching them track through what they could see on the ground and hear was fascinating. In terms of adrenaline some of the speedy drives on rough tracks to get to an animal sighting were interesting, but just to sit quietly in the truck almost in touching distance of elephants, leopards and lions was amazing.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
If you travel in May or into the South African winter take good heed of the warnings about needing warm clothing for the early am starts and evening game drives once the sun sets. At Rukiya there is a drive on the main road a little way to get to Excellence Reserve for the morning drives and although I had layers, woolly hat and gloves, wished I had taken a windproof jacket as it is both windy and chilly in an open vehicle - despite the blanket! Worth it when you get there though. The daytimes were warm and sunny and you are back at the lodge between about 10:30 and 15:30 so I thought I would need lots of books to read for the chill out time in the middle of the day but hardly read at all as most lodges had a waterhole where there were animals and birds to watch. The food is very good - and as you can't go anywhere to walk it off - maybe lose weight before you go or take clothes that can expand with you. Take a spare camera battery and card, and good binoculars, sun hat. Remember there are no guarantees about what you see, the animals are moving in/out of areas and some drives were really quiet - others were overwhelming in terms of variety and proximity to the animals. You will be spending about 8 to 9 hours a day on the 2 game drives in a 4 wheel safari truck - you need to be able to climb on/off and tolerate lots of bumps and jolts as the tracks are rough.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Provided employment and have a conservation focus. Some lodges still working on the environmental impact - only just switching over from bottled water in one case, and sometimes changing towels every day rather than as requested. Given scarcity of water not sure about watering lawns/gardens and how much water is recycled.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Amazing, very well thought out in terms of moving between different types and pace of reserves, great accommodation and meals. Lots of time just to watch the animals and birds - we were very lucky to see what is termed the magnificent 7 - lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinocerous plus cheetah and wild African dogs, but we saw so much more - hippos , spotted hyenas, black backed jackals southern ground hornbill. Spotting not only the big 5 but seeing rare animals such as white lions, wild dogs and the endangered ground hornbill. There was never one trip out the same and the excitement of seeing so many different animals was amazing.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be prepared to look at the itinerary and if there is something you want to do that is not on it then talk to the operator as we found they were brilliant at sorting out things for us. We managed a trip up Table Mountain on a very clear day which Carol from the company arranged at our request - a well worthwhile experience.3. The work being done by the operator to help the Leopard population is a brilliant scheme and hopefully will help the population of leopards flourish.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
This was a fantastic holiday and all the Safaris camps were great, the food exceptional and the staff brilliant. We spent a few days in Cape Town at Beach Villas and we would recommend this place as being truly outstanding. The peacefulness and beauty of the "bush"... Of course seeing the animals was a main focus of the trip and the guides were extremely knowledgeable so we all LEARNED alot... I found this trip to be educational ... the children we had with us... ages 26, 21,19,14,12,9 and 8 all felt that they came away with a greater appreciation for nature..2. Yes.. we learned that the local people were the ones who were hired at the lodges... learned how to cook and do other hospitality tasks.. They were ALL kind, generous and seemingly loving. Of course since each lodge had conservation fees I know they supported conservation.. I do not know if ALL lodges in SA have that..4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
EXCELLENT as it met all my requirements. I did not want to stay in lodges that looked like American hotels. The tented camps made us feel closer to the environment... Sitting in an open safari vehicle, surrounded by around 20 elephants, one of which was so close it would have been possible to touch its trunk. Also, having 14 days in which to learn more about the wildlife and ecology of the Kruger area. Opportunity to see the 'Big 5' plus many of the 'Small 5' and the 'Ugly 5'.2. Follow the advice about taking warm clothes for game drives in the early morning - it can be chilly ! Plus, be patient, wildlife appears in its own time and not always quite what you might expect - don't have preconceptions of what animals you might see on a game drive. We do. The clear and consistent message from Reserve Management, guides and trackers was that we humans are the unnatural element and that it is our role to change nothing except our attitude. We tried to do so and the outcome was exhilarating.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Don't expect to see the 'Big 5' every day but learn to appreciate the smaller animals and the birds, they can be just as amazing. All of the guides were very protective over the animal, bird and insect population. They also helped preserve the environment and encouraged visitors to do the same. Our tour operator are part of the leopard conservation in the area and we were encouraged to feel part of that programme.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The wildlife - we had some amazing sightings. These including seeing many lions (including white lions at one point), about an hour watching a leopard, and seeing the birth of a nyala right by our cabin. Not forgetting rhinos, giraffe, elephant, buffalo, wild dog, hyenas, jackals, genets, civets, mongoose, ostrich and many other birds, antelopes and animals. Also, where we expected that accommodation would be quite basic in some places, it was really comfortable, and at one lodge we were lucky enough to be the only guests for a couple of days.2. Make sure you read the trip notes before - particularly bringing warm clothes, as it can be really cold early and late. As the notes say, some lodges don't have wifi, so be prepared to be out of contact for a few days.3. Yes - it was good to feel that we'd helped support leopard conservation, both as our holiday funded this research, and by being able to put a camera trap out and see the wildlife that was caught on the camera over a week.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Maybe this isn't what you want to hear but it is a testament to the well-trained rangers. Our Rover was literally caught between a charging elephant behind us and a mother and baby elephant in the road ahead of us. The one behind is closing in while Mom and baby were running up the road in front of us. What could have been a potentially dangerous situation was handled expertly by our ranger. He knew what to do to keep us and the mother and baby safe, while eluding the one coming from behind. It was quite exciting and I had complete confidence in our ranger.2. Be sure that the reason you are choosing this safari is to see game. That's what this vacation is all about and why I picked this particular trip.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
yes overall. However I was disappointed that the other camps didn't follow Rukiya's example in providing water for their guests. A glass bottle of water was available in our tents and refilled as needed. A water dispenser was also available in the lodge to fill our water bottles. The other camps relied on plastic water bottles. Shame on them.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
I came to South Africa to see game and I can say that it was a fulfilling experience. Maybe I didn't see the "Big Five" all in one day, but in searching for them, I saw so much more. It was all so good it is difficult to single out just a few parts. We travelled with a great holiday provider and visited 4 lodges in South Africa. They were all 5 star and the friendliness of hosts and the knowledge of the guides was outstanding. I am a field biologist and was quite impressed with the guides and even drivers between lodges in their ability to identify birds on the wing, tracks, etc. Each lodge offered different opportunities to see different wildlife and the accommodations were first rate and more luxurious than I expected.2. Bring as big a telephoto lens as possible and always carry your binoculars. Also bring numerous SD cards! Bugs were not a problem even though it was the hot wet season.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We set out a camera trap to aid in ongoing research on leopards at Rukiya. We also brought as many pencils as we could find lying around the house to donate to local schools. As this was our first safari there were many, many memorable and exciting experiences and it is hard to pick on out above the others. I would say that over the 10 days we spent on safari the excitement never subsided, in part due to the excellent planning by Will and Carol which built in such a wide variation of activities, and the fact that we visited 5 different reserves that were all unique in their own way.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Carol provided invaluable information before and after booking and was very responsive to any questions we had. Having now been on the safari we found that all of the advice was spot on and nothing hadn't been thought of by Carol, so our advice would be to just take on board all of the advice!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
It was really encouraging to hear that the profits from the safari go towards the leopard conservation project which the couple run. Throughout the holiday we got the chance to understand the impact of tourism on the local people, environment and conservation efforts, and especially how Will and Carol have put a lot of thought into every aspect of the holiday to make sure it gives the biggest possible benefit to all of these issues.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
First safari so no expectations but suspect the bar has been set so high that the next trip will have to be lead by Sir David Attenborough himself to surpass it. Well chosen reserves, wonderfully curated for a unique and rewarding experience you wouldn't know you'd missed if attempting the trip by yourself or a travel agent. One can never guarantee sightings (except maybe impala) but we saw all that we hoped for and then some. The best part is witnessing natural animal behaviours - and having guides who can track, teach and look after you. Their enthusiasm was so great that one of us has become a bird watcher! As a vegetarian, definite effort was made to cater for different diets. Food was not bland and most certainly did not go hungry. Will and Carol were passionate about giving us the best trip with every detail considered. Communication was excellent from the first enquiry and throughout, leaving us feeling confident and informed. In short, a first class experience. It would be impossible to pick out just one ! We had such an amazing time and saw everything we hoped to and so much more. I'm still trying to absorb all the memories and experiences weeks after returning. A male lion roaring a few feet from the game drive vehicle, a pride of lion including cubs sharing a buffalo kill, 2 male nyalas dancing, baboons early morning sunbathing, hippos bellowing in the night near our tent, African wild dogs and pups , rhino stomping past the land cruiser in the dark as we sat silently holding our breath, a herd of buffalo at a waterhole and aardvark, yes aardvark !!! Zebra, giraffe, elephants pulling up trees... I could write a book ! The many other animals , beautiful (and ugly) birds and insects we saw also were lovely and interesting to see - they are all part of the bigger picture. Warthogs were surprisingly entertaining !! The friendliness of the hosts and quality of all the lodges - food and accommodation - also deserves a mention. On Track safaris gave us a superb itinerary and varied experience.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Book it and go !! We were slightly nervous first time travellers to South Africa and had a fabulous time. We felt welcomed and safe everywhere we went. The 14 day safari was perfect for us, the operator put a lot of thought into their itineraries and it all worked very well. They are open to any suggestions clients may make and I'm pretty sure we will return. If travelling in winter take warm clothes for morning and evening. We went late June/July and didn't see a single mosquito never mind get bitten ! Also don't take too much, you really won't need anything too smart.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The holiday definitely supports some local people providing employment in the lodges we stayed in. Also as safari guides and trackers. All the lodges provided eco friendly products in the bathrooms and we could see some waste was re cycled. The operator is run for the purpose of raising funds to support leopard research, they also help local children learn about conservation. All the guides and hosts we met were very informed and concerned about conservation issues.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Fantastic ! We couldn't have planned anything better ourselves and it was lovely to have everything taken care of by people who really know what they are doing. Reborn is a bit of a strange term to apply to a holiday experience but our first South African Safari is definitely up there with our best holidays and certainly surprised us with what we could see and the quality of accommodation available -the fact we would like to repeat the experience in the future should speak for itself - we don't normally revisit places but on Safari the animals play the starring role and every game drive offers a different experience.Bruce Marsland review 7 May 2016
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
There were too many wonderful moments to recall them all. Our guides and game drives were superb, and we saw many birds and animals, including the 'big five', up close. We received a good introduction to the bush, and enjoyed a sensory exercise, setting up camera traps, and the educational aspects of our initial safari outings. We stayed at some excellent lodges, and the team from the holiday providers were on hand to help us out and make our holiday extra special. One of the top moments, however, was an impromptu game walk while based at Rukiya Safari Camp, in which we approached a small pride of lions on foot, after our guide tracked down a kill during a game drive. An experience like that provides a new and intensely emotional perspective of life in the bush.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be open to the experience and go for it! The management of our whole safari, encompassing a range of different types of lodges, from rustic to luxury, as well as plentiful game drives, game walks, and other excursions, was totally on point. From the moment we were picked up at our airport hotel in Johannesburg, we were made to feel like part of the family, and we were given star treatment all the way through. We booked and enjoyed the standard itinerary recommended by the holiday provider, but the company is also receptive to individual wishes, so don't be afraid to ask. Absolutely yes. The responsible, sustainable ethos of the company is clear. We had the chance to spend time with people working on the company's trademark leopard project, so we found out more about that, and we visited a local wildlife rehabilitation centre. We also learned about various initiatives linked to the leopard project that benefit the wider community in the area. All the lodges where we stayed were modest in size, so as well as receiving personal treatment, we could see how the environmental impact was managed and we could talk to the owners/managers about their aims in this regard.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent, without question. The entire holiday exceeded our expectations. We saw much more wildlife than we imagined, and we experienced the bush in a direct, personal way. The accommodation, food, hospitality, guides, and attention to detail were all superb. The fact that we were able to get so close to the animals since they had never been traumatised by humans and thus were not concerned by our presence. If you are looking for a first class small group safari experience which has the added benefits of a more hands approach to the wild life and conservation, culture, and people of South Africa and all at a reasonable cost, this is the ideal package. It is well organised and one feels totally safe and cared for and part of " the family".3. Absolutely - the Leopard research project which they have set up and through this their improved contact with the local farmers and practical support of local schools to encourage a more tolerant and enlightened approach to the leopard is gradually changing attitudes -also the choice of eco-lodges and small private reserves in the Greater Kruger means local people are finding employment plus local businesses are also feeling some benefit.4. Of course, viewing the animal life and the plant life was our main reason for going, but we came away with so much more. The construction of the itinerary was such that our knowledge of animals and plants was built upon throughout. The personalization of the experience through our relationship with various guides (shout out especially to Becky with the holiday provider) made the experience intensely meaningful.2. For us first-time safaris goers, the "smorgasbord" approach--having travellers "sample" various safari experiences over fourteen days--was perfect. But if you've been on safari before or simply feel you want to concentrate your energies more on one place or type of safari, do feel free to correspond with organizers to make an itinerary fits your needs/wishes. The operator teaches issues pertaining to environment and wildlife conservation. They use some of their profits to benefit not only conservation of animals but, for example, to build and sustain schools for the local children. We learned on the safari about how animal and plant life are interdependent; one can say that by fusing tourism and ecological practices, this project puts this lesson to work. The result is that you can have adventure of a lifetime, which is what it was for us, and still feel one is contributing to the planet!4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

For me is was a great encounter with bush baby jumping around on the track and in the bushes. For my husband it was the lions making a buffalo kill right in front of our jeep. For both of us it was seeing the white lions at Umlani.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Tour provided a varied itinerary and was designed to start off slow and build towards the end, which is what you need when you have just got off an overnight flight from the UK feeling a little jaded.3. At the lodges where we stayed local people were employed in a variety of roles. The lodges provided biodegradable bathroom products, had solar power and sourced products locally, which all help to reduce environmental impact. The tour company uses the profits from the tours to support conservation projects and Black leopard camp, where we stayed, is involved in leopard conservation. The tour also included a trip to Maholoholo, which provide care and rehabilitation for injured animals.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

It's hard to pick out just one. We had so many memorable experiences. Watching a beautiful leopard and her cub was up there, as was spending an hour watching six young elephants play in a waterhole.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
