1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The visit to the Oil and Wine farm and the amazing personal approach of Des and Ilaria, the hosts.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Travel was the most expensive part of this holiday, so book early and you can travel any day of the week which might help reduce the cost. Must have a car in order to get to the activities. Download the Exploravia app before you leave and spend some time looking at the activities, walks and places to go.Ilaria cooks a fantastic meal each night and accommodates food tastes but this may not be the holiday for you if your kids are ultra fussy eaters.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Absolutely.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Really lovely. Great range of activities to choose from. The guides of the activities are all personally appointed by Des and Ilaria and are so fun and friendly that they make the activities really memorable. Des and Ilaria make great recommendations on activities and walks etc.Polly Crowther review 10 Aug 2024
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Kayaking on the reservoir, splashing under the waterfall and in the pools at the Guazalamanca waterfall walk. The municipal swimming pool in Castril.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Make time for some churros. It’s a remote and very Spanish area without a lot of tourists - prepare yourself for the local pace of life and brush up on some Spanish.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All of the activities were run by small local companies and all the places we ate or shopped were small local businesses.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We had a fabulous time - a lovely balance of relaxation and activity. Derek and Ilaria take such good care of you!Emma Clark review 27 Jul 2024

Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes in many ways.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
My husband and two sons (16 & 14) immediate answer to this question was canyoning. It was an incredible experience combining stunning scenery with clambering over rocky terrain and jumping into crystal clear waters. Our guide, Belem, was outstanding, she made us feel completely safe whilst also making the adventure so much fun.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Have an idea of what you want to do before you go.This is facilitated by Ilaria and Des whose communication prior to departure is excellent, as is the app that they will send you. Take Ilaria’s advice, everything she recommended worked beautifully3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All the money we spent went to local businesses: the activities, the town market, the local cafes and restaurants. There was not a multinational corporation in sight.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We all had the most amazing holiday. The hotel is situated perfectly with the most stunning 360 degree views, the hotel is like a home from home and Ilaria and Des made us feel so welcome. Ilaria seamlessly organised all our activities so all we need to do was turn up and enjoy. Stargazing with Javier was fantastic - he was able to share his knowledge and love of his subject in a way we could all understand. The same is true for Armando: we loved hearing about and sampling the olive oil and wine produced on his farm. Finally the beauty of the surroundings, particularly the colour of the water in the lakes and the clarity of the water in the mountain streams. The streams are icy cold, but well worth the plunge!Stefanie Bramley review 25 Jul 2024

Memorable was how welcoming and accommodating our hosts were. Exciting was exploring and plunging into mountain streams!2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Recommend the astronomy session - it was quite literally out of this world and quite mind blowing!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes - as well as staying in a small family run hotel, the activities were led by small local providers4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We had a brilliant time! Top holiday!Catherine Coulthard review 18 Jul 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
So much was lovely. Ilaria and Des were fantastic hosts, with just the right mix of being present and supportive while not being in the least intrusive. We were there early in the season so we had the place to ourselves. We packed in many activities, all organised by the hosts: cookery, dancing, segway rides, horse riding, kayaking, paddleboarding, visit to bronze Age village, visit to farm for wine and olive oil tasting...the list goes on. And all in 5 days.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Hiring a car is essential, and be ready for some pretty bumpy and steep driving. It's all fine, but takes a bit of getting used to!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Definitely - it was all organised with small scale local folks.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Brilliant - so many activities, lovely places to see, excellent food, and very reasonable, both the stay at hotel itself and all the local prices and activities.Rob Kenyon review 20 Aug 2024

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We loved so much of our holiday it’s hard to chose. Loved the activities - favourites were canyoning, paddle boarding and horse riding. Hosts were lovely people and really cared about giving us a wonderful holiday. Loved the pool - and views. So peaceful and beautiful. And our kids loved meeting other families kids.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Hire a car, book the activities through the host - they are amazing.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We enjoyed all the activities we did but we both particularly enjoyed the paddle boarding. The star gazing was also really interesting and the guide, Javier, showed us the moon close up, planets, stars and a nebulous which was really good. The scenery is beautiful and we also did some lovely deserted walks.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Look at the various hikes before leaving the UK and try to find out when your activities are so you can plan walks around them. The 4G connection isn’t great on the roads so an old fashioned map would be useful.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes it definitely benefitted local people as we used local activity providers and ate at the local restaurants. We would definitely recommend KM6 and the Lake restaurant, the restaurants in Castries were expensive (comparatively) and not as good. Our activities were eco friendly and we stuck to marked paths etc.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We really enjoyed our holiday and it was nice to meet like minded people in the hotel and met friends with them. The activities were fun and it was in a lovely area. The hotel is secluded, peaceful and comfortable and it seems to be very eco friendly without impacting on basics, so there is always water and power. We have been to eco lodges before when the power has reduced when it hasn’t been sunny enough and water has been limited .Laura Schultheiss review 13 Aug 2023
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
All of the activities we did - not one disappointed.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Hire a good car!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Very much so - all activities were run by local people.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
This holiday has something for everyone - I think we all tried something new and thoroughly enjoyed it.Jenny Oldaker review 11 Aug 2023
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We loved everything about it, but especially the chance to try out so many exciting activities in the local area - we enjoyed rock climbing, horse riding, paddle boarding, kayaking and more, as well as the fact there were so many places for wild swimming to cool down in the heat.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
A car is essential to get the most from your trip. The app provided by the hotel is brilliant for exploring and discovering the area so definitely make use of that too!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Definitely - the hotel itself has great eco-credentials and isn't just a wonderfully relaxing place to stay, but also feels like it's very environmentally friendly – from encouraging recycling to its use of renewable energies. Ilaria and Des also work closely with local producers and activity providers so it feels like the place is very much a part of the wider community, and money spent by guests is going straight into the local area.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
One of our best holidays ever - a perfect mix of relaxation in an idyllic area and plenty of activity and exploration, which was ideal for our kids (8 & 10) but would also suit any other age group. Ilaria and Des are amazing hosts and the hotel is a really unique and special place. We would definitely return!Agnese Lyne review 9 Aug 2023
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Difficult to pick as we tried so many activities. My favourite was the farm visit, but my children preferred kayaking and stand up paddle. If you ask my husband he would certainly choose white water rafting, but when I mentioned the stargazing activity, he was thorned between the two! It's a brilliant holiday and something that cannot be replicated without the help of Ilaria and her brilliant organisation.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Make sure your rental car is high off the ground (e.g. SUV) as the dirt tracks will challenge a small city car. There's only 1 option of food in the evening, so if you have very picky eaters in your family, let Ilaria know in advance so that she can have a plan B, such as plain pasta. She will be flexible, but she needs to know about it, of course.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, all activities were with local people and this reduced the environmental impact of the holiday. Also the use of the solar panels and simple food was a welcome change compared to all inclusive hotels. One of the activity was visiting a local organic farm and I was very pleased to support Armando's business and teach my own children the importance of organic farms on the environment. What a brilliant life lesson!4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Fantastic! Read all information ahead of time, so you won't be disappointed by the lack of air conditioning, but you will be won over by the beauty of the nature around the hotel and the simplicity of your time there.Kristina Lightbody review 6 Aug 2023
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The location being so wonderfully remote and doing all the fantastic activities2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Give the thermal pool at Zujar and the beaches at Embalsa de Negratin a miss, it’s a long drive for not much, there is more than enough beauty and culture to explore around Castril3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Definitely supported local adventure businesses through the activities and eating at El Geco there is little wastage of food and only local produce on the menu for the da4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
It was all good and something enjoyable about coming back at the end of the day, sitting down to home cooking and enjoying a drink with other guests, looking out onto the beautiful countryside. Calm and serenity and a few laughs along the way2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
The tour operator app sets out some great activities, destinations and restaurants. You won't go far wrong if you use the App.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, it will have benefitted the local economy. I guess the one downside was the inevitable need to jump in the car to get from A to B, given the location.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was a great holiday and the hosts Ilaria and Derek were the perfect hosts; engaged, passionate about what they do and welcoming into their home.Shalini Sequeira review 31 Jul 2023

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Beautiful scenery, warm welcome from hosts. Segway in the forest, splashing about in rivers & streams. Scent of fig in the air in the wild fig tree forest. Fantastic tour with owner of Olive Oil & Vineyard with tasting afterwards.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Don’t travel in the summer if you will struggle with very hot temperatures at night, as there is no air conditioning or fans or much of a breeze. It is Europe's most southerly desert & very uncomfortable at night. Also, due to the weather various activities were not possible, such as white water rafting, canyoning & stargazing, so if these are must-do activities it may be better to seek a different destination. Our impression is that in spring or autumn this would be a more manageable destination. The villa is remote - it is a 3km drive down a very bumpy track to the main road but then most of our activities were in a 10-15mile radius from there. The scenery is stunning & the location very restful.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes- the local people told us how much they valued the support that the hosts give to the local businesses- horse riding, olive oil, kayaking, Segway/rock climbing team all mentioned it. The villa is off grid, so environmental impact is reduced.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was different, great to see a remote & wilder part of Spain. Very hospitable hosts, lovely evening meals (breakfasts a little basic). So many places to go in the world that we will not return but it was reasonably good value for money.Claire Day review 21 Aug 2023

Swimming and paddleboarding in the lakes nearby. Seeing some beautiful wildlife.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Lunches aren't provided and there aren't any facilities to make your own. Plan to eat out every day. Evening meals are delicious, but small portions. Breakfast is also limited. I struggled to eat as vegan who prefers gluten free options where possible. Research restaurants beforehand if you have dietary requirements.3. Beautiful traditional accommodation in an amazing location. Ilaria & Des are fantastic hosts, very welcoming and helpful but never overburdening. Our family room was spotlessly clean and beautifully presented. Meals were excellent. This is a beautiful area of Spain with an abundance of activities (Rafting, Kayaking, Paddle boards, Horse Riding, Rock Climbing, Hiking and lots more). The pool facility in Castril is brilliant.2. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We loved it all! The house and location are stunning and the hosts so very welcoming. We loved that all our activities were organised in advance for us, which allowed us to focus on relaxing and enjoying them! Although we loved every aspect of our holiday, I think the activity that surprised us the most was the Segway tour in the nearby national park. Not only was it a very fun and different way to cover ground and tour the park but our guide, Edu, was also a fount of knowledge on the natural park and its flora and fauna. A special mention must also go to the morning yoga sessions on the outdoor terrace overlooking the surrounding landscape, which was the perfect way to start the day - allowing you to stretch, relax and get naturally energised in advance of the day ahead.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
In addition to partaking in the fantastic organised activities on offer from local companies, you should definitely allow time in your schedule for some relaxing on site in the stunning natural setting AND also for doing some self-guided exploration and activities in local scenic spots. The hosts have many fantastic suggestions for local visits, hikes, natural swimming spots, etc., which should not be missed. We would also recommend trying out the on-site morning Yoga sessions before breakfast as the most wonderful way to start the day - getting you relaxed and energised in advance of the day's main activities.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, absolutely. We were very impressed with the commitment of the hosts to sustainability in its widest sense - environmental, social and economic. In addition to the environmental practices followed and further encouraged at the eco-lodge, food, drink and services are sourced locally too. We were especially impressed with the strong commitment to supporting local communities and local enterprises. In addition to partnering with local activity providers, the tour operator also actively encourages its guests to eat, drink and shop locally - for example, listing and recommending restaurants to go to for some food and refreshment after engaging in activities. As for the activity providers and guides, we cannot praise them highly enough. In addition to knowing their sport/activity backwards, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all, we were particularly impressed by their depth of knowledge on matters natural and geological. Special mention must go to the wonderful Juan Manuel (river rafting) and Edu (Segway tour and rock-climbing). Juan's high-octane energy and excitement extends beyond his sport to include a wider passion for his natural surroundings. In addition to making the rafting, swimming and jumping as exciting as possible, Juan had a great knack for spotting and telling us about local wildlife and geology. As for Edu, he had an easy-going ,laid-back demeanour that put you immediately at ease and ready to learn.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Top marks, without any hesitation. Five stars out of five - from each and every member of our family. Our holiday met and exceeded all our [already quite high] expectations. In addition to loving our pre-selected activities, we were also wowed by unexpected bonus experiences such as the morning yoga sessions on-site and the local natural swimming spots.HELEN MCDONALD review 13 Aug 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
My wife and I visited during a summer heat wave and very much enjoyed the evening meals on the terrace with a cool breeze and fantastic views over the golden Andalusian countryside with other guests and the friendly house pets, coming at the end of a hot day out on a range of activities. Ilaria and Des are outstanding and receptive hosts and also offered excellent suggestions for waterside retreats to cool off from the heat of the day.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
A rental car is absolutely essential, but easy to organise from Granada airport (and without a requirement to drive in any major city or otherwise busy streets).3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes - the area seems underappreciated in what it can offer in terms of environmentally-friendly tourism, with a broad range of adventure, cultural, and natural activities to enjoy. The tour operator does a great job of increasing the profile of local providers, and bringing income to the local area.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The wisdom of our hosts allowed us to confidently explore and plan our family time with no worries. The turquoise reservoirs are perfect for watersports and jumping into, all the activities were safe but still exciting.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

There are very few people in the sierras and tourism is still evolving and in the right direction so far, allowing fun in nature with non motorised sports (apart from needing a car).4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
If there were more than 5 stars we’d give more! Our 12yr and 9yr old declared this their best holiday ever. Trusting our hosts to plan our first few trips then guiding us as we found our Spanish feet was the distraction and relaxation we hoped for.Lesley Livingston review 6 Jul 2022

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We loved most of the activities, but the all-around favorites were the off-road segway, and horseback riding. Caving, pizza making and rock climbing also high on the list. The guys who run a lot of the activities are great and patient with the kids - even made an exception to allow my younger son to do segway (safely, of course). They took pictures and videos for free and sent them to us. There are so many beautiful walks with streams, rivers, lakes...2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
I was sceptical about other reviews saying the acces road was a bit rough - well it's no joke. It's a 10 minute drive from the main road over pot holes and uneven track. We arrived during wet weather and the road had a few mud pits that were a bit difficult to navigate. Our car was filthy by the time we returned it to the car rental company - so luckily I had all-in insurance! :-) When the weather is dryer, the road is a bit easier to navigate, but I still would avoid driving it at night. Other than that, if you have people who get car sick - take medicine with you! The roads in the area are very windy and we visited a very pretty waterfall cave on our first day that left both kids throwing up - even one who doesn't usually get car sick. We had originally planned this trip in summer, but it got postponed several times due to Covid. We ended up doing it in spring, which is nice because we had the area pretty much to ourselves. On the other hand, there are less outdoor activities available at this time due to weather. Although it is not directly related to this holiday, if you happen to go by Granada on the way - do it. The whole family enjoyed our stop there. It's a beautiful city with a nice feeling.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I think we definitely helped the local outdoor activity company! We liked them so much that when we found out it was the same guys running other activities, we booked more to do with them. Eating at local restaurants and purchasing from open-air markets helps local economy. Since all activities are a minimum of 20 minutes by car (museums and some walks an hour or more), you should plan your days accordingly to minimize the environmental impact of driving.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Great holiday enjoyed by the whole family.Micah King review 9 Apr 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The hotel is in a stunningly beautiful part of the world - photos do not do it justice! It is run by Ilaria & Derek, who are just the kindest people, who made us feel at home and used excellent local expertise to give us bespoke travel ideas. The food in this region is excellent! We made wonderful memories here: horse riding to see the Andalusian mountains, wild swimming in crystal clear waterfalls, drinking beer in Castril's cafes and discovering delicious Andalusian dishes.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
The hotel itself, and a number of the tourist destinations, are not on main tarmacked roads. You will need a car for this holiday. A 4x4 isn't essential, (we comfortably did the whole holiday with a small front wheel drive hire car), but definitely don't travel in a sports car with little road clearance.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Ilaria and Derek are great advocates for local culture, cuisine and businesses. They are also very environmentally conscious, not just for themselves (they are aiming to be almost entirely powered by renewables as soon as possible for example) but also of their suppliers.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Overall it was a warm, friendly and memorable holiday - a little slice of paradise. It struck an excellent balance between being adventurous and relaxing. The balance between excitement and R&R is a difficult one to achieve but our holiday was perfect. We are grateful to Ilaria and Derek for looking after us.Anna Hitchmough review 9 Sep 2022
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Dramatic landscapes, exciting activities and real Spanish culture in the area.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be prepared for it to be really hot in summer. Make sure you have a hire car with air con. Be prepared to do less walking than you might expect.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
No. The local population benefited from us spending our holiday money but any holiday where you arrive by plane and then use a hire car extensively is never going to reduce envirnmental impact.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
8/10Read the operator's response here:
Hi Anna, thank you for your helpful comments. I just wanted underline some points to consider when assessing the holiday's enviromental and social impact.
The latter is particularly important to us; Our business has a very positive impact on the small rural community where we are based. Our local village (like many others in rural Andalucia) is suffering depopulation, primarily due to a lack of jobs. Over the past 12 years our business has brought thousands of new consumers into the area, creating work for restaurants, bars, and supermarkets, not to mention all the auxilliary services (cleaning, laundry, general supplies and trades involved in maintainance).
Most important in our case are the activity guides and companies we work with (we work with 7 different companies). Juan Manuel, for example, is a local olive farmer who operates a rafting business in the summer months to supplement his main income, making it possible for him to go on living in the village he loves. Vagaries of the weather mean olive farmers experience good years and bad years, and can´t rely on a guaranteed income. More than half of Juan Manuel´s rafting customers last summer came from El Geco Verde.
Another good example is Armando, who bucked the general trend by returning from Barcelona to live in the village of his birth, bringing with him his young family. He is now trying to carve out a future as a farmer and entrepreneur. He loves to shares his knowledge and passion for ecological products so we worked together to develop a farm tour and tasting activity. This has proven very popular with our clients and really helps Armando´s business. We are aware that as the main (if not the only source of foreign tourism) in this struggling agricultural community, we feel our little family-run hotel is actually making a big difference for many people.
The lack of public transport goes hand in hand with the depopulation of rural areas, and makes moving by car the only viable way to discover and enjoy this unknown área, its wonderful landscapes and hidden treasures!
Of course, we´d like to minimise the negative environmental impact, and to this end we are currently developing plans for our own electric car charging facilities at the hotel, so that drivers who want to switch to hybrid vehicles can do so more comfortably.
Flying to foreign destinations for holidays is a bigger issue, but not the only one to be taken into considaration when assessing the overall impact of a holiday. It´s worth mentioning here that not all foreign clients enter Spain by plane, some choose to travel in their own vehicles and others use Spain´s excellent rail network, hiring a car only for the last part of the journey to us, and for getting around while they are here. The cross-cultural benefits of international travel are well established and the obvious economic benefits of tourists from richer countries spending money in poorer ones should also be taken into account when assessing the impact of international flights.
Our eco-hotel is off-grid and self-powered, utilising a considerable array of solar panels. In October 2022 we made a significant investment to quadruple our energy generating capacity with new, more efficient panels, boosting both fotovoltaic and hot water output. Our central heating system uses olive stones for fuel, a locally available wasteproduct and completely renewable. Auxilliary stoves run on pine pellets, which are also processed and packaged locally. Our open fireplace uses seasoned olive wood for fuel, from the annual pollarding of our own olive groves.
We really strive to reduce our impact on the environment, buying primarily fresh local produce and employing a fixed menú to reduce wastage, going for minimal packaging whenever possible and recycling around 90% of our household waste. Of course, we are constantly looking to improve.

Be sure to chat with Illaria as much as possible about the area. She is a wealth of local knowledge. We discovered so much from her recommendations.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The local economy is suffering in the area and the hotel is doing their part to encourage the community. I really felt the mutually beneficial relationship between the hotel and the local area. The formula works really well. The lower impact of the vacation was in the no waste, no excess way they ran the place. The food was nourishing but not extravagant. The rooms were clean and comfortable but simple. Overall, I felt like I was supporting a circular and ethical way of tourism.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We loved it, but it was quite hot at night. Since there is no AC we depended on getting a cross breeze in our room, which wasn't always possible. Perhaps some fans in the rooms might have helped.Richard Roberts review 5 Nov 2021

Try and choose activities on the "near lake" for the first few days as it's much less driving. Local pools generally don't open til end June, don't panic! Try the "menu del dia", great value.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The most memorable part of the holiday was most definitely the owners of the hotel. The holiday was off the beaten track and yet, we found more than ever to do, thanks to the help of Ila and Des. They've provided an awesome little app of the local area, restaurants, walks, activities and amenities. It really enhanced our holiday.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Although on a responsible holiday, you'd prefer to be without a car, you will need it! It's a rural location and you will need a car to get the best out of your holiday. The area is quite large, with no other transport links. The terrain can also be quite rugged to get up into the national parks and to get to the beautiful caves, walks starts and places of interest - there really is no other way. We're not afraid of walking at all, but you will miss out on some really spectacular opportunities.3. Hire a 4x4 if you can! There is a lot of driving on uneven terrain. Also consider travel sickness pills or boiled sweets for the driving as there is quite a bit of twisty driving. My least favourite part of the holiday. Take along card games or travel board games. These are rather lacking at the hotel.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The hotel obviously has good relationships with local businesses and links is with them. This seems useful.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was a pretty great holiday in lots of ways. The array of activities and the support we got with setting up activities was fabulous. The activities themselves were brilliant and the guides we had were a delight to spend time with. The hotel meals were good. Nothing fancy or pretentious. Good home cooking. And the hotelier Ilaria cooked everything herself and was super flexible about adapting meals to suit our rather picky 6 year old. Breakfasts were very basic and I would have preferred a little more choice and excitement at breakfast time. The coffee was delicious but the tea was just tea bags - this was a shame as I would have liked some loose tea in a pot instead. Little touches of luxury like that would have pleased me. The room we had was spacious and stylishly decorated. But very spartan. A double bed, a single bed, down duvets, and a wardrobe and 4 drawers. I would have hugely appreciated an armchair in the room - there was plenty of space for such. And I would have liked to have some kind of drinks facility in the room ideally. Though it was perfectly possible to go and make a cup of tea in the little guest kitchenette downstairs. The bathroom was large and stylish with bath and shower and bidet. More about the guest kitchenette: there were tea bags and instant coffee. But rarely spoons! Which was odd. And I would have liked some other kind of ‘make your own’ coffee. But it was perfectly good enough. The communal lounge was lovely. Comfy, stylish, warmly lit. Loads of books. A few very basic games. It was pleasant to sit there before dinner reading or chatting with other guests. I would have appreciate a chess set and some card games. That would have filled a few holes in our schedule nicely. My biggest issue with the holiday - which the hotel could obviously not help - is the location. I mean, it’s beautiful and remote and within fairly good driving distance of loads of great activities. But. To get in and out of the immediate area was slow and hard going, twisty bumpy tight roads that made us all feel sick every time. Was a big issue for our son.Helen Soppitt review 15 Oct 2019

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Stargazing was an incredible experience.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
The hotel was good and the hosts excellent. Paddle boarding was great family fun and the stargazing was fantastic. The light pollution is so minimal that the sky is amazing to view. Do canyoning if there has been some rain in recent months otherwise it is disappointing, as ours was.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
There were efforts towards being environmentally friendly with breakfast and recommending and working with the locals to provide activities was also great to see.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The trip to the eco-farm was the activity we most enjoyed. The canyoning was the most exciting.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be aware that the hotel is a few kilometres from anywhere, so there is a fair amount of driving. And if you don't like eating late (around 8.30 pm) then you will have to take your evening meal elsewhere (say in Castril).3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Very much. Ilaria and Des takes great pains to use local people, minimise their environmental impact (although no doubt there's more they could do) and encourage their guests to make a connection with the local area. To take one example, their house wine comes from a local winemaker who is converting to organic. It was delicious!4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent. As adults we loved the location (so quiet, with such great views) and the hospitality. Our 12 year old son loved (most of) the activities and hanging around with other kids. And Ilaria and Des and their children held it all together beautifully.Jeremy Anson review 24 Aug 2018
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We loved the activities - canyoning, rafting, horse riding, kayaking and a farm visit - and the friendly, communal atmosphere at the hotel. Ilaria, Des and their boys were great hosts and the kids loved having the cats and dog around.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
There's some driving on tracks and winding roads, so hire cars can struggle a little (we had a low powered car). Otherwise, be prepared for relaxation, amazing views, tasty food and great company.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All of the activities were arranged with local individuals or companies. The hotel uses solar PV ( for electricity) and solar thermal (for hot water) and food and wine are sourced locally.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The holiday was a great success for our whole family. Activities to keep all ages and levels of fitness happy - canyoning, paddle boarding and rafting with other families were particular highlights. We had planned to sample the local cuisine but found the food at the hotel delightful from the first day. We ate in the stunning setting, watching the sun go down and socialising every night. Illaria and Des were able to accommodate our differences in tastes, which was a great help. We combined active days with visits to local areas of interest, as well as relaxing beside a beautiful, non-tourist outdoor pool in the local small town, with all the effort of planning activities left to our wonderful hosts.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Make sure you take a copy of Illaria's detailed written instructions for finding activities, as signposting is sometimes limited in this beautiful, non-tourist part of Spain. Take a Spanish phrase book to be able to say the basics. Many people do not speak English but everyone we met was very friendly and made a real effort to understand our attempts at Spanish!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All of the activities were managed by local people or organisations. Des takes great pleasure, when asked, in discussing how the hotel manages its electricity using solar power. Even the lighting for the terrace after the sun goes down uses solar powered table lamps which store solar energy during the day for use in the evenings.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Fabulous. We would love to go back at some time in the future.Niki Taiwo review 8 Aug 2018
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We loved the whole holiday - the perfect blend of relaxing and being active!! Canyoning specifically deserves a mention! As does a visit to the local farm to milk goats and make bread and cheese. Spending time at the accommodation was relaxing and sociable with great food in a beautiful non-touristy part of Spain - loved it!!!2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Hire a car - you’ll need one to get around. Other than that, roll up with an open mind and sense of adventure! You don’t need to plan anything ahead - Ilaria was fantastic at suggesting/ booking activities and days out. We also used the local pool in Castril a lot - you can buy multiple entry passes - it’s a great place to relax and cool down.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All the activities are organised by local people so it certainly felt as though we were supporting the local economy.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
There are so many memorable moments from our stay - stunning views, beautiful sunrises & sunsets, crystal clear night sky, amazing accommodation, great activities (kayaking , rock climbing, horse riding, milking a goat(!), making cheese and bread) and of course Ilaria and Des our hosts. Not forgetting Lola the dog who escorted my daughter and I on long rambles around the countryside.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Certainly hire a car and don't be shy making friends with the other guests - it made the activities more fun by sharing the experience, our daughter had friends to play with and it allowed the adults to while away the evening chatting and drinking. The local town Castril is a lovely place to wander around - particularly down by the river - and sample the regional cuisine at the family-run local restaurants.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes - the holiday is Eco-Friendly; all our activities were through local businesses, shopped from local stores and we ate out at restaurants in the area everyday.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Our hosts, Illaria and Des, made our holiday incredibly memorable with their welcome advice, planning, home made food and their fantastic hotel. We swam, kayaked, rode horses, rafted down rivers and went for hikes through the superb national parks in the area. The "Lake District" of Spain lived up to its reputation and we found swimming in the man-made reservoirs was a great experience.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Definitely go swimming in the natural pools - don't let the fish bother you - and the reservoirs - so stunning to swim in such scenery. Do the white water rafting - fantastic fun. We tried horse riding for the first time and it was great - where we went will probably be a little tame for anyone who is experience. Have breakfast and dinner - the food is home made and excellent and its a very chilled way to spend the evening.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The place is a restored farmhouse run in a way to have minimal environmental impact - natural cooling/heating for example.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was one of the best holidays we had. Combining the mountains with Valencia made it country, city and beach. We loved it. Both my sons - 12 and 15 - had a fantastic time and my 12 year old said it was the best holiday he had been on!Natalie Fairbairn review 16 Apr 2018

Rock climbing, kayaking and visiting the hot spring pool at Negratin Reservoir.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
To make the most of this place you do need a car (despite this not being very eco!) as the hotel itself is approx 4km from the road and I'm guessing maybe 6km from the nearest bus stop.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
All activities were with local guides and the hotel is 'off-grid' so yes I believe it benefited local people and also supported environmentally friendly policies.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
A lovely host and a beautiful area! It would have been 5 stars, but for the weather which did curtail several of the activities we wished to do. No fault of anybody's though of course and my only reason for an overall 4 star for the holiday :-)Sean Bullman review 12 Oct 2017

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We loved the rafting trip. My 7 year old was buzzing from the excitement of jumping off rocks into the river and rafting down the small white water sections. The farm visit was excellent too with Des and Ilaria's eldest son, Ludo, providing the translation for everything from the goat milking and horse riding to cheese and bread making.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Plan to eat with everyone in the evenings. It is a lovely friendly atmosphere with different families swopping suggestions and tips on the local activities and the food is fantastic. Our youngest wasn't up for eating every meal but Ilaria was very happy to do a 'rescue pasta' when necessary. The only tricky bit is how late dinner is for UK children as it usually started 8.45-9pm which is a stretch when bedtime is usually 7.30-8pm. It was worth it though and surprising how quickly they adapt.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Absolutely - lots of the activities were run by locals and the hotel itself could not be much more environmentally friendly!4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent - We were sceptical at first about being in the middle of nowhere, not having everything planned until we got there and expecting the children to eat so late and such unfamiliar food but Des and Ilaria were amazing hosts who couldn't have helped us more. Their suggestions were spot on and directions were invaluable each day in a region where signposting is pretty minimal. After I damaged my ear drums jumping into a deep pool during canyoning, Ilaria insisted on driving me late at night to the next town to see the 24hour GP for which I hugely grateful. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a stay here to like-minded travellers and families.Jonathan Stevens review 20 Sep 2017

We loved it all. The rafting, the kayaking, the rock climbing, the peace and tranquility, the lovely local people, Des and Illaria, the house, the stars and spending time together.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
No matter what else you do, you must get a spit roast chicken from the market at Pozo Alcon and eat it with fresh crusty bread.. Amazing! Download google translate if your Spanish isn't very good. The local people are very kind, generous and patient but they don't speak much English so being able to order and communicate in Spanish makes the holiday much more fun. If you do the rafting, make sure you've been to the toilet before you go and take some water to drink.3. Invest time with Des and Elaria discussing the local area and planning an itinerary. They really know what is going on and what will suit your needs.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Absolutely. We ate lunch most days in small independent cafes. The hotel is off the grid, and with no excessive refrigeration facilities or air conditioning units, it uses barely any.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Brush up on your Spanish - it's not a very touristy area and not everyone speaks a lot of English although Des and Ilaria were great at translating when we got a flat tyre. Another tip would be to hire an SUV car if you can as the roads can be a bit bumpy. Make use of Des and Ilaria's local knowledge and maps.3. As others have said, you need to be prepared to drive yourself around on narrow roads, including 3 km up a dusty track to get to the place. For this, you are rewarded by stunning countryside, few tourists and a lovely hotel where English is spoken, and lots of advice given for making the best of your visit. We also enjoyed meeting the other families at the hotel and comparing notes on days out and what to see.3. All of it really! For Peter (14) and Mum - the rafting activity. Lovely people with a great sense of humour and concern for safety of the smallest members of the group ran it. For Dad - the National Park walks and swims. The hotel was lovely - Des and Elaria's warmth and enthusiasm set the tone. They seem to have accumulated a great set of people who run the activities that they recommend. The community atmosphere at the hotel was superb creating a great environment for friendships among adults and children alike. We came home with a new card game... books to read... and lovely memories of the other guests as well as the place.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
The stargazing activity is excellent for beginners. For more advanced astronomers views through telescopes accompanied by qualified narrative was fun but perhaps a little slow. Worth it for us. The national park is definitely worth a visit. In summer get up as early as possible if you want to walk. Swim in the streams!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

When hiring a car, consider its off-road ability and ground clearance. There's nothing unmanageable, but a 4x4 would have coped with the unpaved roads better than the Ford Focus we hired. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Rafting, and swimming, in the river was the highlight. The bronze age mountain village was also really amazing. It seems a very remote area, with hardly any people, and very little traffic, which was a blessing as the roads are mountainous twisting and quite scary.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Plan your activities before you go so that you get to do extras like star gazing and canyoning. Take your Spanish dictionary or brush up your Spanish before you go. It's off the beaten track, so useful to be able to communicate if you can.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
This doesn't seem to be a very touristy area for foreigners, used more by Spanish people exploring and enjoying their own country. Probably benefited local people as our hosts suggested loads of good local places to eat and arranged activities run by local people.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
A good mixture of relaxation and fun 8/10Deborah Yewdall review 5 Sep 2017
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The location is marvellous, really beautiful and there is a wealth of activities to enjoy in the area. Kayaking and swimming at the lake in Castril was stunning, we had the place totally to ourselves as eagles circled overhead, beautiful. We also enjoyed swimming in the river in the national park.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Make the most of your hosts local knowledge to help you get the most from your visit.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We really welcomed the opportunity to stay in a sustainable, family run hotel. I'd like to see them make more of their sustainability, perhaps with some fun facts for young visitors. There was a water shortage when we were there so perhaps a bit of information reminding guests to minimise water usage etc would be good.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
There are many memorable moments on this holiday. Our favourite was visiting Castril town, it's a very beautiful little town with lots of different walks at varying degrees of ease. The walk way along the wooden track caressing the mountain edge, overlooking the river is breathtaking. It's an easy walk 1.5-2km with a lovely restaurant at the the end and a children's play area. Also, the kayaking is a lot of fun, we visited the dam in Castril - again so beautiful. You are spoilt for choice on this holiday. Perfect for an immersive, cultural and natural experience, ideal location to switch off.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
It was Easter in April when we visited and warmer than we expected. I recommend taking sun lotion, solid footwear for the fabulous walks, and light long sleeve clothing to cover up. The holiday offers great outdoor adventures and Ilaria and Des provide lots of advice on great places to visit. We enjoyed a different location each day, there is plenty to see and experience. The place offers stunning panoramic views, delicious homemade Spanish cooking, nothing is too much trouble for the owners. I recommend booking the stargazing experience, kayaking on Castril dam, horse riding in the mountains, a visit to the Bronze Age burial site and the two restaurants overlooking the dam's; the first on route to El Geco Verde and the other 10 mins drive away from the hotel. Both serve traditional delicious Spanish dishes.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I found the the excursions and activities supported local businesses really well, they are set up offering a 100% profit to the locals running the activities. The holiday definitely reduces environmental impact and supports conservation.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was a wonderful holiday in a tranquil location. We were spoilt for choice on things to do and see. Perfect for an immersive, cultural, natural experience. An ideal location to enjoy the outdoors, connect with nature, meet local families, offering a sense of community and connection through conversation with other travellers. Ideal place to switch off and relax.Molly Hooper review 2 Feb 2017

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Three: the visit to Jose-Marie's farm, where he enthusiastically showed us round, cooked us some delicious food, made cheese, milked (tried anyway) goats, a truly delightful and enthusiastic gentleman. Second was swimming with the fish in the outdoor swimming pool with the beautiful sunlit mountains in the background with goat bells quietly tinkling nearby. Three, Ilaria's delicious cooking and not having to think about food, except for lunch. In fact four, the walk in the gorge on a cantilevered path over the water which thundered below us.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be prepared to use your car each day, unless just staying at the hotel, we went off season, so it wasn't terribly warm. However, Des provided perfect and detailed suggestions for what to do each day, so we had a lovely time.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes, the hotel is mainly, if not totally off-grid and we didn't travel too far each day.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Very pleasant, and extremely well catered for. We have a demanding dietary regime and it can be difficult to find somewhere suitable, so because this was sorted out for us, it made it far more relaxing. Thank you Des and Ilaria.Cristina Piccolo review 17 Jan 2017

We received a very warm welcome from Des when we arrived, after a short drive down a track through the olive groves. The hotel is perched on a hill with 360 degree views of working countryside, with vultures sometimes circling overhead. You are adjacent to 2 Natural Parks and the wildlife is fascinating. The English and Italian hosts are lovely, only too happy to suggest and book activities if you so wish. We have a 6 year old daughter, and she LOVED the rafting, horse riding and the farm visit. Best was the rafting, I'd say. We spent as much time in the river as we did the raft. Magical floating down the currents. Also don't miss the nearby communal swimming pools, fed by the river and full of trout! Granada is a big day - 3 hours in the car, but well worth visiting the Alhambra. After a tiring day it was great to come back to a bottle of cava, a chat with Des and Illaria, and 3 delicious courses. We only at out twice in 7 days. I can't recommend a holiday here highly enoughHelen El-Hoss review 19 Sep 2016

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The scenery in the area is amazing, it's like being in a cowboy movie - the mountains, valleys and ravines are breathtaking. It's easy to have a good time when you're surrounded by all of that. We stayed at the accommodation, which is a great place to stay for the quiet life. Lovely rooms and food, and the couple who run it are great, very helpful, they helped organise activities (horse trekking and kayaking) and provided us with ideas/maps for days out and places to visit.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
This part of Spain is rural and they don't see a lot of English people, most people don't speak English, but they are friendly and will try and help you where they can so don;t be afraid to try your mangled Spanish as most people will play along.3. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The Canyoning trip was a fantastic and testing adventure - almost all of the guests in the hotel took part, age range from 10 year old girls to age 50 something men. It was easy to fit into the group, which was good as my family were chicken that day. It contrasted nicely with the stargazing, which was peaceful by comparison but informative and fun. Staying up that late also required stamina.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
I would contact Des and Illyria to make sure you prebook whatever activity needs to be prebooked, but they were fantastic and very knowledgable hosts, and seemingly can arrange almost anything, including most kit if you forget anything. They do a great job at drawing maps. They also serve great food. The hotel is a long way off the road, but just keep on going down the track.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We helped keep local businesses going, suporting local activities eg adventure companies, stargazers, dance teachers, and good tips for local restaurants. The location was hot, but big spacious rooms were generally cool.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Just spent 10 days here at the beginning of August. Beautiful, peaceful views and Ilaria and Des, the B&B owners, were very friendly and helpful in planning our activities and recommending places to visit. We especially enjoyed rafting and stargazing where we were led around the Milky Way and star constellations by an expert from Malaga. Amazing seeing Saturn and its moons as well as distant galaxies! We also loved all the wild swimming opportunities.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
If you don't like the heat then don't go in August! There is no air conditioning and although there are mosquito nets on the windows so that you can leave the windows open at night, the rooms still stay quite hot at night. Ilaria and Des did, reluctantly, put a floor standing fan in our children's room after a sleepless first night, though. The hotel is off the National Grid hence they are keen to limit electricity usage. Also, the track to the hotel is quite bumpy with some rather deep ruts so we did have some concerns about the Ford Fiesta that we had hired, although it made it back to Malaga airport, if a little dusty!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We used local tour operators for all the activities and ate out at the local restaurants so the holiday definitely benefited the local people. The hotel generates its own solar electricity also.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
This was a very different holiday to what we are used to but one which the whole family thoroughly enjoyed. Lots of family bonding time and both the children( age 14 and 11) said that they would be happy to do a similar holiday again. The activities that we did, were horse riding, rafting, kayaking, stargazing and river walks/ swim. I would say that 7-8 days might be enough time in this area though.Lesley Bender review 13 Aug 2016

Hire a car for ease of access to nearby attractions as a little off the beaten track.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We brought additional tourism to the area which seemed somewhat of a novelty in this part of Spain, refreshingly. Being that the hotel is "eco friendly" we were conscious of electricity and water usage, which was kept to a minimum, along with recycling wherever possible.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent. This was a departure from our usual beach resort vacation and with three girls to amuse was probably the best family holiday to date. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The scenery is breathtaking, Ilaria and Derek are the perfect hosts and the children really enjoyed all of the rafting, canyoning and wild swimming that they did. It is really difficult to pick just one memorable moment from such a relaxing yet exhilarating break. We took part in Rafting, Pizza making, Canyoning, Farm Visit and Spanish Dancing and enjoyed them all.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Bring some old trainers, we didn't and most of the water based activities required them.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The holiday definitely benefited local people. All of the activities were run by local people and payments were made directly to them. Ilaria and Derek cook locally sourced food, the property relies on passive design rather than A/C to manage the temperature and the only significant impact on the environment would be the location of the hotel which is a 20 minute drive from most places.4. 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Definitely the Canyonning! It was the most amazing, terrifying, exciting thing we have ever done...2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
We would suggest that you do the rafting/kayaking before the Canyonning as everything seemed a little tame afterwards! We loved the horse-riding too and don't miss the raised river walk at Castril. The local restaurants were great, fantastic food and incredibly reasonable.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Absolutely- tourism is still in it's infancy in the area and I hope our custom supported the local restaurants and activity businesses that we used. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming too. Des & Ilaria do everything possible to be sustainable but at no point did that impact on our enjoyment.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was a brilliant holiday, the first time we have done anything like it and I'm sure it won't be the last. We saw a side to Spain we'd never seen before whilst keeping the whole family entertained. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes - the activities were all organised directly with local businesses. The hotel uses renewable energy and is not connected to the national grid (they do have a back-up generator!) 1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
If forced to select just one then it would have to be canyoning. Imagine climbing 150m down to the bottom of a dam and then stepping off rocks into a dark pool (thank goodness for the wetsuits). Whether it was scrambling over rocks, through streams, traversing the steeper bits by rope, abseiling, swimming in cold, clear water or summoning up the nerve to jump several metres off a ledge into one of those pools, all the time surrounded by scenery that very few get to view -it is very special. As a mixed group of energetic teenagers and fit and not so fit adults, it worked for us all. The guidance of both our guides was calm and reassuring and it felt safe and secure at all times. Expect to be tired, happy and exhilarated at the end. But then the horse riding - up into the hot hills and then back down through olive and almond groves and a delightful white hillside village – was amazing, the best ride we novices have been on. The Andalucian cooking, with our ebullient and ever so Spanish chief who provided most of the ingredients from her garden, was great fun and the results very, very tasty. Will we be able to re-produce that wonderful tortilla back in England? We hope so!2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Staying is like visiting some cool friends who have gone to live in the coolest place -as far removed from a packaged holiday as possible. The hotel is small, comfortable and our hosts, Ilaria and Des, so friendly, relaxed and accommodating. It is in a stunning location - the 3km drive down the dusty track is something in itself and, after the initial where are we going worry, part of the hotel's charm. And the food is good too.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. All the activities are booked with local companies employing local people - we found them all to be friendly and helpful. We changed our minds about timing several times and Ilaria was fantastically helpful, making all the arrangements for us. The hotel ran on solar power while we were there and has a biomass (olive stones and almond kernels) for the winter)4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We really enjoyed discovering this lovely region of Spain. This holiday makes for a great base to visit the National Parks and towns in the area. We made full use of the hosts' knowledge to get the best out of our stay. The Alto Plano region is relatively free of tourists and we enjoyed being amongst the Spanish on holiday. We enjoyed walking in Sierra de Castril Park and tried kayaaking, horseriding and fishing.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Des and Ilaria are extremely knowledgeable and very willing to help you get the most from this relatively unknown area. They have books, maps and details of activities and walks around the region. There are many good options for eating out locally or the hotel can provide a 3-course meal if you let them know at the start of the day. We also spent two days at Granada at the end of our stay, and several guests included this accommodation as part a two or three site holiday. The local town of Castril has a really good Municipal pool. Do try the activities availale.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
The hotel is off-grid and guests' waste is recycled. Local companies were used for the kayaaking, horseriding and stargazing activities and a local cook was brought in for an Andalucian evening and the cookery class. Also for the dance class that another guest asked for.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
A sound four stars. Guest searching for comfort may find the lack of fans or air conditioning make for hot rooms in peak season, but we did acclimatise. We chose this holiday because it combined the opportunity to do a range of activities (great for our two teenagers) and also keep us parents happy with bird watching, walking and reading. Although there is lots to do locally, the scenery in this region is stunning so do try and explore further afield as well. We often headed off into the mountains on some very exciting roads! I did most of the driving and was a little apprehensive at first but you quickly become accustomed to hairpin bends and sheer drops!3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
A lot of the food and drinks were sourced locally and the activities were run by local people or companies. There was also rubbish recycling. Distance from the main highway meant that most holiday makers would need a car to get to the property.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Tranquil but with lots of opportunities to challenge yourself or your family!!Peter Law review 14 Sep 2014
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
We were thrilled by the views from the location of El Geco Verde. The views of both the landscape - olive groves, small towns, mountains and plains and the clear night sky were memorable. The canyoning activity was exhilarating, I'm told it was a beginner level, plenty exciting enough for me! The children (9 and 14) enjoyed kayaking on nearby lake and horse riding in the cool evening with more memorable views.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
We went partly for the activities, we also did archery and visited the 'badlands' scenery, swam in lakes and with fish in a freshwater swimming pool. We recommend doing all these to appreciate what the area has to offer. The hotel accommodation is very well presented and comfortable and your hosts Des and Ilaria are most welcoming and helpful.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I think that all activities were organised with local businesses and we were encouraged to visit places of historical/archaeological interest throughout the area. Recycling was very evident in terms of disposable cans, bottles etc.. There was no air conditioning which was liveable even in August heat, and this further conserves energy. The only thing we would prefer them to eliminate were the wasps!4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
We would rate this holiday very highly, particularly the approach of Des and Ilaria - nothing was too much trouble and they were always cheery and helpful. There are plenty of activities to do, sites to see and places to visit - would certainly recommend for a family holiday.Fiona wolfenden review 7 Sep 2014
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The most memorable parts were doing some stunning walks - we were given great advice and info sheets on the local walks. Also walking to a nearby village to sample the well known local lamb chops for lunch. We loved the nearby village Castril which had a great outdoor pool and market. Also just having lovely food cooked every evening for us by Ilaria was heavenly and gave the holiday the most needed restful part as we are always too busy when back home doing activities/ school stuff and house stuff ...The location of El Geco Verde set in the rolling olive planted hills 3 kms from main road was great . Just amazing . Finally ;learning how to make good pizza - we now do this regularly back home as one of our fave family meals ...2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Arrive by lunch time at Malaga airport as best to do the car journey before dark - its a 3 hour car journey. Ask Des for best sat nav instructions to the hotel that are not through Castril as this is the long way round if coming from Malaga.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
yes - as we shopped local for lunctime stuff and used local companies to do Kayaking b/ stargazing and canyoning4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
It was really really good and I would like to return - either by myself to chill and walk or if we can organise ourselves and others like this summer then return next summer ....Deborah Stapleton review 6 Sep 2014
1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
That is difficult since most of the holiday was memorable and exciting. Of particular note: the way Ilaria and Des, the children and Lola the dog welcomed us. Ilaria and Des did everything they could to meet our every need. The location of the hotel (well worth the dusty track)is very special. We all (with an age range of 11 -57) did the canyoning and loved it, the gorge is spectacular. There are very few English tourists, in-fact few tourists at all, which we consider to be a bonus.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Go with a sense of adventure. Try things out of your comfort zone - it's fun. You need to be fairly fit to fully enjoy some of the activities. You will need to hire a car. There is something for everyone, we enjoyed lots of energetic activities however we could easily have occupied ourselves with relaxation, walking and site seeing. Don't forget to tell Lola if you are going for a walk from the hotel, she will accompany you.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes: Local operators were used for all activities, the hotel reduces environmental impact as best it can. Local produce is used in Ilaria's lovely cooking. However you have to be realistic and accept that a plane trip is required to get there and you need a hire car.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent - I would like to return, perhaps in the spring to see the rivers and waterfalls fuller with winter melt and the Olive blossom. We had a super time. The location of the hotel with its 360 degree views of olive groves and distant sound of sheep bells facilitated relaxation. The flexibility of and range of activities (we walked, cycled, kayaked, canyoned, rock climbed, visited villages, markets and historical sites and swam in municipal pools with fish!) kept everyone entertained.Holiday Reviews
