Our 5 day hike on the "great" Great Wall was memorable. We had a wonderful guide who accompanied us all the way, supplied us with all the water, laughter and encouragement needed when facing those thousands of steps. (more)Criag Knighton

Memorable parts? We initially wanted to walk on the Great Wall and thought that would be the highlight but every destination we visited was equally memorable Tips? We used the high speed train for long journeys which gave us a comfortable rest though others may wish to fly Local benefits? Local guides in each region give a window on the every day lives of residents. Our guide in Ping’an gave us an insight of how our trip supported the local community by helping families ... Memorable parts? Loads of highlights in our 6 week holiday: seeing pandas & the Terracotta Warriors, walking the Great Wall, sound and light show in Yangshuo, the Potala Palace in Tibet. We also found the building work around us fascinating- such a massive scale, 20 skyscrapers at a time going up plus huge road and rail building programmes. The sheer scale of everything was astounding. Tips? Research where you want to go. Local benefits? Certainly supported the local ... (more)Linda Seaton

Memorable parts? Getting to climb down to the Yangtze River in the Middle Gorge and experience the power of the river. Also a getting boat ride in a stunning part of the river - when the road was closed. Walking around the Old Town in Leijang Tips? Be flexible! Plenty of road closures due to slips - ended up on boats and horses. If you are open to changes you will have great experiences. If you like salt with food carry you own. Local benefits? Probably benefited ... (more)Wendy Barton

Memorable parts? The museums in Chengdu, Kunming and Shanghai (all outstanding), and the monasteries and temples particularly Ganden Sumtseling Monastery near Shangri La. Tips? Book your own accommodation ( in hostels or inns) and arrange all your own meals; this saved us a lot of money and enabled us to escape from the international tourist bubble. Regard your itinerary with the holiday provider as a legal document, and make sure it specifies EVERYTHING you wish to see as there ... (more)Gillian Gillanders
China holiday, ancient capitals tour

Memorable parts? Visiting the Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an and seeing the amazing jade carvings and Buddha statue. Tips? Beijing airport is full of fairly elaborate scams - call your guide if you can't immediately see them. It's worth getting a SIM that works in China, too, for this reason. Local benefits? I felt like this benefited the local people, though I don't think it specifically reduced environmental impact. Overall rating? Amazing experience, one of ... (more)Owen Cawley

Memorable parts? Mosque and shrine in Mashad - but so difficult to choose one amongst so many places visited on this amazing adventure Tips? Be prepared for long days and early starts. Walking boots and water bottles not essential as walking easily done in walking sandals, and water providied in plastic bottles in most hotels. Local benefits? Supported local people by visiting areas of the normal tourist route and therefore putting money into their pockets Overall ... (more)Lynda Perkins

Memorable parts? 7 day trekking of the great wall . I visited sections of the wall that had no other tourists last day on the wall , was the first day I saw other tourists on the wall I felt that I could experience that wall as it was now , often in poor despair and challenging , but it was really worth it . Plus I spent more time trekking and exploring different sections of the wall than if I had booked with none Chinese tour company. Tips? it is challenging doing the 7 day ... (more)Fay O’Connell

Memorable parts? Finding a replica of a Tang Dynasty sancai glazed, funerary sculpture of a camel and rider, which I had first experienced as part of an exhibition of artefacts from the ancient Silk Route mounted by the British Library in 2004 in a shop in Jiayuguan at a price that I could afford. Even though the Mogao Grottos are becoming commercialised, being able to see the frescos that are available in the caves that are open to the public was a wonderful ... (more)Genie Gabel-Dunk

Memorable parts? I can honestly say that we enjoyed it all. The quality of guiding and activities was good. Our local tour leader did a great job and was responsive to our needs - the structure and organisation enabled us to pack a lot in to the 14 days. It is really hard to pick favourites but Hong Kong was probably the least favourite part and we would have preferred more time elsewhere. The cultural/historical visits were enough to inform and illuminate without becoming too lengthy ... (more)Linda Mail

Memorable parts? There were many memorable moments which included extraordinary vistas such as the glacier melting into streams and then the lake, challenging hikes in high altitudes, interesting meetings with local minority people, learning about different religions, customs and beliefs of the people. Tips? Some of the guides are dedicated and informative and others are less. There are at times unexpected changes with guides based on the area and population you’re visiting. ... Memorable parts? Getting attacked by a bear Tips? Not go into the wilderness with this company. The guilde I had wasn’t an experienced trekkers/hikers. Local benefits? Think it helped to the local communities eating in locally. Overall rating? Couldn’t do it without a translator in this region. (more)Brendan Cummins
