1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Our highlight was tasting wine directly from the qvervi at the Chubini Wine Cellar. The sensational mountain views, including Mt. Kazbeg, on the drive from Tbilisi to Kazbegi, were unforgettable. Each ancient monastery had its own appeal. My favorite was Ikalto Monastery, with all the qvervis on the property donated by thankful parishioners.2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Be sure to come prepared with clothes that layer, especially for the mountain areas. Since you will visit many monasteries, it can be hard to remember the names and distinguishing features. Take a photo of the sign at each one to aid your memory upon return. Women need head coverings and skirts, but both are typically available to borrow at the monasteries. Trust your guide to provide wonderful suggestions for local dishes.3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I truly felt we were supporting a small, local business when we visited Chubini Wine Cellar. For that reason, we were sure to make a purchase there. We had a similar feeling at farmer's house dinner in Akhalsopeli. Those were both special experiences. In addition, the apiary stop was unique and informative. We were pleased we could support that local enterprise. Knowing that Responsible Travel focuses on local businesses, I was surprised that our tour included a stop at the very large and very touristy Khareba Winery. We would have preferred a smaller, more personal winery visit. The Tsinandali Residence was also not a stop to benefit the local people, in our opinion.4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Our trip to Georgia was, in a word, perfection. Our goal was to explore ancient monasteries, enjoy the high Caucasus Mountains, and sample the wines made in the old qvervi traditional method. Our expectations were exceeded on all accounts, due primarily to our outstanding guide, Irakli. He added history and insight into every stop, introduced us to delicious Georgian cuisine we may not have tried on our own, and made us feel we were seeing all the treasures Georgia has to offer. Irakli's expertise meant we could relax and thoroughly enjoy exploring a new area. As I said, perfection!Holiday Reviews
