1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Climbing Mount Fuji

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Check and double check the company's timetable of events to make sure that they have booked everything correctly.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, it did all that.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

The holiday itself was great but the planning, which is what we paid for, was bad. The timetable had us arriving back from Mount Fuji at 6pm but doing a tour at 2pm which then had to be cancelled but we ended up arriving back at 1pm so we would have had plenty of time to do the tour. We had 2 tours booked one day but because of a typhoon one was postponed and one was cancelled, don't know why both could not be postponed. They booked the car to pick us up for the
airport from a hotel across the city, only for I spotted it we would have been left stranded. We had to make our own arrangements to get to the airport and they said that they would reimburse us the cost, 3 weeks later still waiting to see what we will be refunded even though I have asked for a breakdown. The reason we went with this company was so that everything would be organised, so there
would be no problems but there was quite a few mistakes which was unacceptable. The Saying "you had one job" comes to mind.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

With no domestic flights included, travelling by train, foot, boat and various modes of public transport or shared transfers for this itinerary means that environmental impact has been kept to a minimum, whilst offering the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery and striking history of Japan from a relaxing and personal perspective.

The hot spring baths at Hakone are some of the oldest onsen waters in Japan and the people have been visiting them for many decades. The waters are communally used and replenished daily, using recycled water rich in mineral content and reviving properties, while still having a smaller impact than other hot springs were the waters are not refreshed or recycled.

Our suppliers are focused on improving sustainability and reducing plastic waste. We are working together with them and the local guides to offer refillable water bottles and reduce offers of other single-use items such as wet wipes or straws on a more widespread basis.

People

During your journey you will have the chance to stay in traditionally run and locally owned Japanese Inns, or ‘Ryokans’ that often use locally grown, seasonal ingredients for your hosted meals. Expect mountain vegetables, home-made tofu and miso soup and locally reared beef and chicken, as well as regional varieties of tea and sake.

In Kyoto, you will spend a morning enjoying the warm hospitality of the Women’s Association of Kyoto, an enchantingly cultural experience that also helps to support authentic ancient traditions and employs exclusively local members. Your time here highlights the fascinating history and traditions of these women, who work to preserve their unique customs in the modern world through education and demonstration.

We recommend buying crafts, home wares and gifts from selected organizations that we can suggest for you, so you can help support local communities and their skills and you also know that your money is directly benefiting the local economy.
