Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

We want our customers to enjoy an experience led holiday within a natural environment. To do this we use partners and suppliers who are guardians of their surroundings. This means that they look after the local environment they are responsible for, as well as encouraging employment, and revenue generation, for the local population.

During t his trip, guests will be hosted and staying at Elewana Collection properties. Elewana has set up the The Land and Life Foundation. This helps to protect areas beyond parks and has been pivotal in driving the development of community owned wildlife conservancies. Fees from staying at these camps goes directly towards supporting the community/traditional land owners.

All camps and lodges guest stay at on this trip employ strict recycling systems and state of the art power systems that use solar and power storage to minimise emissions.

On this trip Elewana will provide you with a reusable aluminium water bottles that can be used throughout your journey. We strive to help our customers minimise their use of single-use plastic wherever they travel in the world. This has helped to reduce single use plastic water bottles by 160,000 per year in Elewana's camps.

All of these camps and lodges use locally grown and sustainably sourced food to ensure the local communities growing food have a source of income and to reduce food miles.

People

We align ourselves with partners who actively work with local communities, whether this means that they are employing the local population, involved in conservation efforts within the community, or educating the local population with an aim to encourage them to look after their environment.

Through Elewana's The Land and Life Foundation, they have a Wildlife Warrior Programme that aims to educate the next generation of conservationists. It currently supports up to 2,200 children with their schooling in Kenya and Tanzania.

The foundation also provides tangible benefits to the communities living around its lodges and has provided free healthcare for over 1,285 patients as well as trained clinicians which has meant a further 40,000 people near its camps have access to a health clinic. Through supporting the local primary schools, over $300,000 worth of stationary and school supplies have been provided to ensure the local community continues to benefit.

Elewana uses local guides, as they know the land, wildlife, and environment the best. This results in a higher customer experience, gives them a greater understanding of the fragile balance of the area they’re visiting, and means that a local person is being employed! They also hire 50-75% of all staff from the local community, allowing them to benefit with stable employment.

Pre-travel all of our customers are presented with what we call a ‘travel pack’. Within this travel pack our customers receive all the detail about their trip. The detail includes useful information on the destinations they are travelling to, including, but not limited to, the social and political situations within the destination. We also give guidelines on what to pack to try and minimise the amount of luggage our customers take resulting in lower fuel usage on planes and other vehicles.
