As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
In most traditional Maasai communities, women forage for firewood. Its been estimated that Maasai women collect between 20 – 25 kgs of firewood a day in an activity that can take up to 6 hours. Over time, this has resulted in widespread de-forestation and loss of habitats for wildlife. And you will see evidence of the impact during your time at the village and on your eco tour. However to combat this, bio gas systems have been introduced and you will be shown this amazing and simple remedy to these problems. A biogas system, because it uses manure from the cows (which the Maasai have in abundance) totally eliminates the need to forage for firewood. A non-polluting gas is produced by the biogas and this is then fed into the homes of the Maasai. A simple gas burner is then used for all cooking purposes. It is non polluting and stops the loss of precious forest, reduces erosion and the loss of wildlife habitat.People
In the Maasai community you are visiting, your hosts are local Maasai families who have all been inducted as guides. And they receive income for working as your guide and this income helps support their families. With a regular income they no longer have to sell their land. Our Maasai guides lead the way and educate guests on the resources of their land and the herbs and edible fruits which the consume when they are up in the hills and the herbs which they use for medicinal purposes. All of our Maasai guides speak English and you will get their perspective on life from a village elder and his wife and a young Warrior. It’s important that you get their perspective, and you can ask any questions you like. Their perspectives on the same issues are always interesting. The tour operates as a small group activity that have a low impact on the communities and we always ensure that we do not disrupt their daily activities. Our guests become integrated into the daily routine of the village members.Popular similar holidays
