1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
There are SO many things to choose from but the number 1 was staying in chilled out a Caye Caulker and taking the boat trip with Ragga Sailing Adventures - we did a lot of other snorkelling trips with other companies but they were the best by far. Knowledgable, friendly and helpful guides, actually educated us on the marine life (not just pointing out fish) and we’re incredibly respectful and protective of the reef and environment. Can’t recommend them and the island more for a laid back (no room for pretentious people here) escape to the sea after an adventure on
the mainland .
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Def drive is super easy, no need for a guide (we managed to navigate the whole country without our google maps even working .If your pushed for time, give Belize City a miss. Try the fried jacks and Belizean breakfasts!!Definitely stay at Black Rock Lodge near San Ignacio, it’s a very special place set in the trees far from the hustle and bustle and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful.
Everything and everywhere is way more expensive than you’d expect!!!
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Absolutely in terms of conservation It was less apparent about how it benefitted
local people or reduced environmental impacts, probably because we moved around a fair amount and didn’t see one place for too long
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Absolutely incredible. We had the most wonderful family adventure.
I could have organised a similar trip myself if I’d had the time to research and plan it but I cannot fault the team (U.K. and local travel agents) for their help, flexibility and organising exactly what I asked for -

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Snorkelling on the reef off Caye Caulker.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Mundo Maya representative did not turn up at Belize City water taxi terminal for the shuttle to Mexico. Go into the Marlin Espardas office (near baggage reclaim) and they will check you onto the correct shuttle. There was extensive building work being done in Merida and Campeche which may put some people off. The travel time from Flores to Tikal in almost 2hrs (not 1) and the return shuttle time is set by the time of your shuttle to get there - you have no choice. The no plastic bottles rule in Tulum site is strictly enforced. You also need 2 tickets collected from different offices to get into the site. The local shuttles in Tulum are very easy to use and much cheaper that the local taxis.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Use of local hotels and suppliers (rather than international chains) gave increased local benefit. Use of ADO bus service and collective shuttles reduced environmental impact compared with private transfers. Visits to sites provided both incentive for their conservation and funds to conserve them with.
We have some concerns that some of the hotels did not provide drinking water dispensers to refill reusable bottles from and increased use of plastic bottles
- it's very hot and so you need a lot of drinking water.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Throughout this itinerary we use buses for all transfers, except from one flight between Mexico and Belize which can't be avoided. Travelling in this way significantly reduces co2 emissions and also allows you to see more of the country. As well as this we also try to only use small-scale and locally owned accommodation which not only gives customers an authentic experience but makes sure that the revenue from this tourism goes to local families and communities who are the ones who need it the most. For example, at Lake Bacalar we book an eco-hotel that uses 100% solar power, harvests rainwater, uses local suppliers and recycles everything possible.
Before departing on this trip, our customers will always receive an informative document called 'Be a responsible traveller', which provides useful advice on how they are able to travel in an environmentally-friendly way such as using reusable water bottles and limiting the amount of energy that they use.
The guides are all local and have an in-depth knowledge of the areas they work with, making sure it is respected by staff and visitors alike during excursions.
Our responsible travel journey starts in our office in Brighton where we provide our staff with a healthy lunch every day, we also collect our food waste for compost so that it doesn’t end up in the land fill. We also try recycle as much as we possibly can and are nearly a paperless company. The paper that we do use in our office comes from the same company we recycled it with resulting in a closed loop system.
People
Our local partner is accredited and provides an honest, local experience; promoting cultural and environmental immersion through close links with neighbourhood suppliers. Like us, they consider it their duty to promote sustainability through education and preservation of cultural and natural resources in their destinations. At home we strive to support local businesses, charities and the community. We offer all our staff a day out of the office to volunteer at the charity of their choice. We also use a local catering company for fresh, healthy lunches in our Brighton office everyday, and use a local recycling company for all our waste.
We believe in putting people first, and provide lots of benefits to our staff members in the UK to enhance their work and personal life, such as participating in the ride to work scheme, and providing discounts for local fitness centres and holistic therapies, and best of all a healthy free lunch – every working day!
