Description of Namibia tours under canvas, small group safari

When it comes to Namibia tours, this one takes the cake. Spent 12 days on a safari circuit around the country’s best sights.

The still, clear nights in Namibia are something to be celebrated. What better way than on a camping holiday? For the majority of this holiday, you’ll be staying in semi-permanent camps, with amazing star gazing found just beyond the tent canvas. There’ll be clear views of the Milky Way by night, and hopefully clear views of Namibia’s plains game by day.

Your route is a loop that starts and ends in Windhoek. You’ll go north towards Etosha National Park for amazing game drives, then west to the Damaraland region to seek out the desert elephant. Even further west, you’ll explore a section of the coast around Swakopmund. Heading back inland, you’ll go south to the sand dunes as Sossusvlei before returning to Windhoek. There are a few long drives on this trip, balanced by days spent at leisure in the reserves and national parks.

Namibia’s wildlife is made even more magnificent when you consider the incredible, harsh landscape in which is it found. At Ongave Game Reserve you’ll camp close to a watering hole, for a great chance to watch oryx, springboks and giraffes converging to drink.

This trip includes time spent tracking desert elephants and the incredibly rare black rhino with support from both a reputable naturalist guide and the Save the Rhino trust. Even when the wildlife proves elusive, you’ll love searching for it in these dramatic deserts.

For many travellers, a highlight is the dunes at Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert, where red dunes contrast with white salt pans, and the colour contrast is even more pronounced at sunrise and sunset – the best time to climb the dune.

These tours are done in tiny groups of a maximum of seven guests, so that locations are not overwhelmed by visitors, and you can enjoy the sights in almost complete peace.

Planet

Admission fees to the Big Cat rehabilitation project ensures that the valuable work undertaken by the charitable foundation is supported. The foundation has rehabilitated over 80% of cats back into the wild since its work began.

Our visits to the rock art sites in Damaraland are lead by local guides, and fees paid for our tours are reinvested directly back into the local community. We stay at eco-friendly, locally owned and managed lodges which have been built using local materials and which blend into their environments. We recommend eco-friendly activities for optional activities, use local guides in rural areas and aim to minimise our impact on all the destinations we visit.

Our local ground handler is particularly supportive of local conservation projects, and the company has its own trust, funded by a percentage of its revenue. The aim of the trust is to give tangible assistance to African people and their environment in their efforts to achieve economic viability without doing harm to natural habitats and wildlife, thus utilizing both on a sustainable basis for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.

People

Our guide on this trip is local, his wildlife spotting skills and knowledge of the flora and fauna will make for an informative and exciting experience. His knowledge of local cultures will provide a valuable insight when passing through different tribal areas, and guests will be fully briefed about local customs and traditions before visiting local villages.

We use accommodation that is small and locally owned, ensuring that the costs are retained in the local economy. We travel in small groups of up to 7 people, to avoid overwhelming local communities and to give our guests an overall better experience.

We have forged a link with the Child Hope Initiatives Project in Windhoek, which provides basic numeracy and literacy teaching programme to 50 orphans. Guests are invited to bring items to donate to the project such as stationery, basic English books, toys and deflated footballs or other sports equipment. We are a wholly online company, and do not produce paper brochures.
