Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
The suppliers we use on this extraordinary holiday are dedicated to employing the local population and acting in a sustainable manner to maintain the beauty and ecological diversity of the islands they are guardian of.The lodges stayed at over the course of this trip are owned and operated by HBD Principe, which is a leading eco-tourism company in the islands. It works to research and minimise its resource uses, has constructed its hotels such as Sundy Praia in a sustainable way that minimised concrete usage.
The hotels operate a dedicated waste management and recycling system. They also ensure that all produce served is locally grown, ensuring reduced food miles and employment for local producers. The coastal properties, such as Sundy Praia don't offer game fishing in keeping with their sustainable practices.
The islands have a huge focus on the conservation of their natural environment both on land, to protect endemic species and rain-forest, and around the coast to encourage the growth of the turtle population that comes to the islands to lay their eggs and we ensure that our guests are briefed on these and will not impact the environment in any detrimental ways.
People
Our suppliers are an important source of income for the local population. Many of the food goods as possible are sourced from the local markets, excursions visit local culture groups and highlight conservation efforts on the islands, and guests are encouraged to explore the island and interact with the community.HBD is the largest employer on the islands and 92% of employees are local. This ensures immediate support for the local communities and provides strong training and growing of local talent.. It also means that guides at the three hotels are local and know the area best so can show guests the true side of São Tomé and Príncipe.
The lodges support local artisans with their manufacture as well as with construction and art works available giving guests the chance to discover more about the local skills. At each hotel, HDB offers excursions that connect with the local community and culture and help to support the locals with traditional Dance Workshops, Bulawem - The most traditional cultural manifestation of Sao Tome & Principe, and Tchiloli. This gives guests the chance to learn about the cultures of Sao Tome & Principe and directly support those people.
Pre-travel all of our customers are presented with what we call a ‘travel pack’. Within this travel pack our customers receive all the detail about their trip. The detail includes useful information on the destinations they are travelling to, including, but not limited to, the social and political situations within the destination. We also give guidelines on what to pack to try and minimise the amount of luggage our customers take resulting in lower fuel usage on planes and other vehicles.
