Description of Split to Dubrovnik walking holiday, Croatia

This self guided week of walking in Croatia takes you along the Dalmatian coastline from Split to Dubrovnik via the islands of Hvar, Korcula and Mljet.

Many of the Mediterranean scenes of olive groves, lavender fields and crystal clear shallows have remained unchanged down through the ages and there are numerous walking trails that bring you out at the beach or lakeside for a well deserved dip before your evening meal.

The itinerary below provides the perfect blend of walking, island hopping and cultural sightseeing with plenty of shaded paths through pine forests providing ample opportunities to rest, relax and pause for a picnic. Your luggage will be transferred ahead so as to be ready and waiting on your arrival at your next pre-booked, locally owned overnight accommodation. Don't forget a day pack for refillable water bottles and freshly baked flaky strukli.

Walking tours around the old town district of Dubrovnik take place with a local guide after arriving by ferry or catamaran from the island of Mljet. This not only lessens your impact on an already overcrowded destination but also allows you to arrive before or after the coachloads.

Elsewhere you’ll experience the former aristocratic residences of Dubrovnik’s most important families on the island of Šipan before returning to the mainland for one last night on the town overlooking the twinkling waves of the Adriatic, beneath a black blanket pinpricked by stars.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

The beauty of the Dalmatian coast. Everyone was very friendly.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

The hotels were below the quality expected and we feel the cost did not reflect this. We've done a lot of these type of trips and this definitely was the lowest
value for money of all of them. Also, there were unexpected costs like having to pay a park fee on Mljet that we don't believe was mentioned ahead of time.
There was no guidance on restaurants, particularly that we would need to make reservations for the better places weeks prior to our travel. Also, figuring
out lunches was more difficult than usual. We were told places might be open, but felt that having definite guidance from the tour company would be more
helpful.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Not particularly re environment. Probably benefits local people

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Hi Amelia, Thank you for your review.
Before booking confirmation and paying the deposit clients do receive our PDF file with all the trip details. All hotels we use on this tour are described. They also receive a list of booked hotels to review, which they confirm once they are happy to book the tour and pay the deposit. Regarding the entrance fee in Mljet national park, this information comes under the NOT INCLUDED section in the PDF (in red it says: Entrance fee to national park Mljet to be paid on the spot). Regarding the information about restaurants we will definitely add this information for our future clients.
As a walking holiday clients greatly reduce their environmental impact and benefit local people by staying in local accommodation.
We hope this information helps and do let us know if you have any more feeback,
Dalibor

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Tourism is the world's fastest growing industry. Traveling to far flung places gives us a wonderful opportunity to experience cultures that are so different from our own. But with the wondrous joy of travel comes the responsibility of ensuring that we do not adversely affect those countries that we visit. In a nutshell, Responsible Travel is about ensuring that you, as travelers, and we, as a promoter of travel:

-respect the local culture
-do not inadvertently introduce new social ills and
-promote & practice environmental responsibility in the places that we visit.

That way, you enjoy a unique and memorable experience as well as authentic cross-cultural exchange and our local resources, cultures and customs are protected.

Our environmental policy:
We recycle all our waste paper. Also all our guides have mission to take the garbage where ever they see it (on the sea, river, mountain...).
Our correspondence and promotion is carried out via the internet and email, minimizing the amount of paper used for our activities.
We use established, locally-owned and run accommodation wherever possible and aim to leave sites in better condition than we find them.
Our vehicle fleet is managed to minimise environmental impact.
Our group sizes are small, helping minimise cultural and environmental impact.
We monitor our impact, and where necessary alter our programmes accordingly.
We always abide by site-specific guidelines pertaining to flora and fauna.

On our tour the accommodation is mostly provided in small hotels, guest houses or apartments. On all our tours we use local produce and provide local-style meals, and we encourage our guests to try local dishes and delicacies. We are encouringing our clients to buy local product such a olive oil and wines from Dalmatia.

People

All our staff are locally employed and all our guides are, ensuring a more authentic experience for travelers, as well as sensitivity to local customs and culture. Guides are part of local sports clubs and except at the guiding job they are active in free time. On our biking and hiking trips we are helping local community by marking bike trails and hiking paths to make the trails more secure. We also involve local communities in remote areas that we travel to.

We support local economy and small business by supporting locally owned shops, restaurants, and using local guide services. Using local employees, accommodation providers, local restaurants and transportation services, we ensures that financial benefits remain in the local community. In our self guided walking books we have list of local restaurants (konoba) with traditional Dalmatian food as suggestion for our customers. With our walking routes we are encouriging clients to visit small villages such as Malo Grablje on Hvar or Pupnat on Korcula to improve local economy stoping in locacl restaurants there.
