Description of Shakespeares Way walking holiday, Cotswolds to London

Enjoy a two-week journey along one of England’s great walking routes: Shakespeare’s Way, which over 235km takes you from the birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon of the world’s most renowned playwright, through the idyllic Cotswolds, to his Globe Theatre by the bank of the River Thames in London.

Averaging around 16km a day at a relaxed pace, this route can be done in one two-week block, or broken up into two week-long holidays if more suitable. You’ll stay in high quality accommodations throughout, on a bed and breakfast basis, with luggage conveniently transferred on your behalf so that you need only carry a daypack with you.

The route’s highlights, of which there are many, include the opportunity to see the former home of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife, and the superb Royal Shakespeare Theatre, in the picturesque town of Stratford-upon-Avon before setting off. From there you’ll head south through the glorious Cotswolds scenery, past Blenheim Palace, the birthplace and ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill, Woodstock, and the prestigious university city of Oxford where you join the Thames as you make your way towards London.

Arriving in the capital you’ll pass the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew, and the seat of British political power in Westminster, before finally reaching the Globe Theatre. This accomplished reproduction of Shakespeare’s original Globe, which was first built in 1599, is constructed from English oak and is a pretty much faithful rendition of the original.

This classic walk through English heritage is fully supported, with detailed guidance and maps, and allows you plenty of time to be fully immersed in the sights and scenery of a beautiful corner of England.

The Responsible Travel Code of Conduct which you receive with your information pack contains suggestions on how to be an ethical traveller by reducing water usage, recycling and properly disposing of litter, and reducing damage to the environment.

The majority of the accommodations we use are locally owned and operated and use local produce for providing you with breakfast. All these issues make a great difference to the economic welfare of the local community by providing employment.

During the booking process for your holiday we reduce paper usage by corresponding by email wherever possible and only printing correspondence which is legally binding. We recycle our ink cartridges and envelopes, and use low energy light bulbs. Paper which cannot be recycled is shredded and composted.

Whilst on this holiday you will be walking at your own pace in your own group. We restrict group sizes on our self-guided walking holidays to a maximum of 12 to reduce impact on the community.

We encourage you to use this walking holiday as means to support your chosen charity by way of sponsorship.

Whilst walking you are taking part in a healthy activity and visiting the area while reducing road congestion. The local authority encourages people to visit the area on foot using public transport in line with their desire to encourage sustainable tourism.

There are a large number of National Trust Properties. The membership and entrance fees are used to restore and conserve our heritage, and provide employment for local people.

The Shakespeare's Way is a result of the hard and tireless work of Peter Titchmarsh, a keen walker and creator of the Macmillan Way. In acknowledgement of this and in keeping with our Company eithics, we will make a donation of £20 for every one of our holidays booked to the Shakespeare Hospice in Stratford-upon-Avon, registered charity 1064091. We would also encourage walkers to consider a donation, or perhaps obtaining sponsorship.
