Description of Slovenia highlights holiday, self drive

A full tour of Slovenia's "best bits" including the capital, Ljubljana, its beautiful coastline, incredible lakes, caves and historic towns. This self drive holiday is designed as a circuit starting and finishing in Ljubljana so you can travel to Lake Bled, the Triglav national park, the Adriatic coast and Postojna caves in any sensible order.

The Highlights of Slovenia is based on an 8 day duration but we can tailor-make the overall holiday to suit your requirements, such as making a longer trip and/or adding new locations (an example two week itinerary is available upon request). We recommend small, independent or family-run, properties and to take the stress out of arriving and departing we offer a private airport transfer service and will deliver your hire car to your hotel in Ljubljana at no extra cost. All our vehicles have a/c and come with a full tank of fuel, we provide driving directions, maps and parking information for all accommodation.

This holiday has a tried and trusted recommended route with our personal suggestions for sightseeing and activities included with your final travel documents but you are free to explore or relax as much as you like within the overall structure of the itinerary. Driving conditions are excellent with the new highway from the capital to the coast cutting down on travel times but also freeing up space on minor roads so drivers can choose between peaceful scenic routes or speedier alternatives to make the most of time away from home.

All accommodation on this Slovenia driving holiday has been hand-picked to show off what the country does best: hospitality; with smaller, more authentic, family-run hotels and guesthouses providing a unique look at the culture and the lifestyles of everyday local life.

Once you’ve finished your tour of Slovenia, the world awaits with Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula and the fabulous north east corner of Italy both within easy reach if you’ve got the time for further travels. All you have to do is ask.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

We have chosen to include places to stay where public transport is more than adequate for sightseeing so that the car is not used with towns or national parks; the use of such a variety of transport enables you to interact more fully with the locals, to practice your language and to minimise your carbon footprint somewhat. By including the opportunity to visit the National Parks on this holiday you choose to contribute to the excellent record of conservation in recent years through the entrance fees.

We encourage travellers to be responsible with water use particularly on islands and in high season but also careful regarding water waste which can affect fragile ecosystems. The same applies, of course, to packaging and litter waste, buying local produce such as from small stores and markets will usually be packaging-free; recycle or reuse as much as possible - your example may well encourage others to be equally responsible and avoid negative consequences at all levels and in all ecosystems.

As a company we employ responsible policies such as recycling paper, ink cartridges, glass and cardboard; we minimise the use of electricity and conducting the vast majority of our correspondence and promotion via the internet and email, minimizing the amount of paper used for our activities. We also compost waste in our company garden.

People

Accommodation on this holiday is in, primarily, family run, small hotels. The food in the hotels is primarily sourced locally and a large number of dishes on the menus are home made. We encourage you to engage local guides in places where their expertise and local knowledge will enhance your experience and understanding of the historical context and on the environmental impact of your visit. This is particularly true in the Triglav National Park where in some places tourism income is a major supporter of the local economy - we encourage customers to book activities with local guides and providers who contribute both to the current economy but who also look to the future by training local young people and committing to projects that maintain the quality of the environment and its biodiversity.

As well as supporting the local community and economy directly our holidays also encourage support indirectly. The latter because more interaction with local people and local tourist service providers engenders greater understanding and respect which almost always leads to larger and more careful spending by visitors.
