Sometimes known as ‘Europe in Miniature’, Slovenia is a tiny country packing a huge heart and a wealth of diversity – the soaring Julian Alps and foaming rivers ripe for adrenaline activities (including cycling, hiking, rafting and caving) plus a ravishing Venetian-influenced coast and fairytale lakeside towns.
One of these – Bled – provides the main base for this fabulously varied trip. Kick off the action with a 30-minute journey to Lake Bohinj, a vast glacial lake where a cable car whisks you to the summit of Mt Vogel in the Triglav National Park for some amazing hiking along lush Alpine trails.
You'll also have a free day in Bled, where options include cycling round the lake past its girdle of elegant 19th century villas, a river adventure back in the Triglav National Park, or maybe a Pletna boat ride (a wooden, awning-covered vessel rowed by a special oarsman) to visit the church on the pretty island in the middle of the lake.
There's a day too on the Sava Dolinka River for white water rafting Grade 2/3 rapids through gorgeous scenery to reach the town of Lancovo for a delicious dinner – be sure to try the excellent local wine.
Moving to the medieval jewel of Piran on the Slovenian Adriatic Sea, discover a former pirate stronghold now renowned as a beguiling slice of Venetian style on the Gulf of Trieste. Choose between just exploring this lovely town or get active with a guided exploration of the underground canyon at the Škocjan Caves.
Back in Bled, you'll head back into Triglav National Park for mountain biking – either a 16km route along the scenic Radovna River as it meanders its way through a wilderness valley, or a route higher up the hills taking in a trio of pretty villages.
The flexible nature of the trip in terms of free time with plentiful activity options means you can tailor much of your time with contrasting pleasures – from a day trip to Vintgar Gorge to enjoy spectacular hiking across rapids, waterfalls and pools via an elevated boardwalk, or visiting Slovenia's lovely cosmopolitan capital Ljubljana (pronounced 'Lyub-Li-Yana').

Our group spent a lot of money locally so yes. We always travelled by public transport so yes.

The country & the leader were the highlights. The operator's contribution was disappointing.

All our tour leaders are passionate about responsible travel, so our messaging is consistent when it comes to tackling environmental issues. One key problem is littering, which our leaders address on the ground by actively educating our suppliers and locals too. Always leading by example, for instance, gathering rubbish others have left behind.Our greatest contribution to minimising our transportation’s impact on the environment is by travelling on bike, foot or raft, avoiding any use of energy or fuel. When we do use a vehicle, we’re committed to using local forms of transport wherever possible, including public bus on this itinerary. This also allows our passengers to enjoy an authentic local experience.
Travelling in a small group allows us to stay in family-run hotels throughout the trip. We also support independent restaurants and cafes, serving locally sourced produce.
We encourage travellers to bring their own water bottles to refill along the way. The sale of bottled water contributes to an enormous environmental problem around the world. In addition to the water in the bottles, the production of a one litre plastic bottle requires two litres of water and 200ml of oil. A large proportion of which end up in limited landfill or discarded in waterways and other natural environments. Although it can be difficult to avoid bottled water when travelling, we suggest considering water purification techniques such as iodine or using water dispensers provided by some of our accommodation. When unable to avoid bottled water it’s better to buy the largest one available and distribute into your smaller bottle for the day.
People
We employ local leaders as much as is operationally possible. Guides are always local, and they set their own rates. Leaders are always European, and wages are standard salaries as found elsewhere in the tourism industry. All equipment used on this trip is sourced from local companies.This tour actively encourages guests to chat with local people, visit local cafes and bars, purchase local produce, gifts and crafts and discover what life is really like in this part of Europe.
The local bus journey from Bled to Bohinj on this trip is an excellent example of travelling like a local, with locals. The remaining parts of the trip are taken on private transportation, the operators of which are always locally sourced. This small group tour has a maximum of 12 participants, meaning that we have a low impact on the communities we visit and can ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people.
