Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Socotra island is one of the most untouched natural places of the world. Due to its relative inaccessibility it wasn't overdeveloped and people there still live in harmony with nature. We will travel in a way to impact this environment minimally. Only use roads, camp only at designated areas that our local guides use, we will leave these places as they were or in a better place. We will also take care of any trash that we produce during our camping. This means we will carry it back to the city and dispose in a responsible way. We will purchase daily catch from local fishermen who fish in a traditional, sustainable way. We will not take home any natural "souvenirs" these belong to the island not our bookshelves. The island has a dry climate and we will not use any excess water - we will use bottled water for drinking and cooking, we will use ocean for bathing.People
We want to give back to the small local community of Socotra which consists of 50.000 people. We connected directly with the local organiser who is native to the island and lives and operates there. All our staff is local and we pay them directly. The tourist dollars go directly where they need to go. One of the main criteria for choosing the local provider was the responsible travel principles. Besides being local, our partner also acts responsible to his community, promotes local businesses to our tourists and cares about the nature. In our itinerary we also included locals. We want to experience the traditional way of life and give back. We will be visiting beekeepers, goat herders, camel owners and will go fishing with locals.
Since Socotra is a very traditional community we will educate our guests about proper etiquette, local customs, culture and religion. We will also encourage our clients to donate to local botanical gardens to support their program to save the dragon blood trees.
