Description of Solomon Islands tour

Journey to the remote Solomon Islands and discover pristine beaches fringed by swaying palm trees, colourful coral reefs teeming with marine life and fascinating WWII sites. This four-island discovery itinerary takes in the best of the best with visits to four key islands. Explore Guadalcanal and the capital Honiara, home to interesting WWII sites and the jumping off point for travel to Iron Bottom Sound for world-class wreck diving. Continue to western province and delve into the wonders of Munda and Gizo where activities include deep sea fishing, snorkelling, diving, village visits, jungle hikes and more. Snorkel crystal clear waters over a WWII Hellcat fighter plane and visit Skull Island, a shrine which houses the skulls od Rendovan chiefs.
End your Solomon Islands sojourn at Uepi Island Resort which sits in picturesque Marovo Lagoon. Regarded as the largest salt-water lagoon in the world, Marovo Lagoon is home to a host of sea life including manta rays and an abundance of reef sharks. Spend the days exploring fringing coral reefs above or beneath the waves, hiking the island rainforest or relaxing on sandy beaches.

Itinerary

Day 1Land Honiara. Transfer to hotel and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.
Day 2Today is free at leisure to relax at the resort or we can arrange excursions. Why not head out on an island tour taking in various WWII sites including the open air Vilu Museum and the US War Memorial which offers panoramic views of the surroundings. (B)
Day 3A further free day on Guadalcanal. Maybe spend the day diving in Iron Bottom Sound, a watery graveyard for numerous ships and aircraft dating back to WWII or maybe take a trek to Mataniko or Tenaru Waterfall. (B)
Day 4Return to the airport and fly to Munda. Land and resort staff will collect you and transfer you to Zipolo Habu Resort on nearby Lola Island which sits in Vona Vona lagoon. Enjoy the day at leisure to relax or explore the island further with a jungle hike across the island. (B/L/D)
Day 5Spend today touring neighbouring islands and nearby waters to discover WWII sites. See a fully intact US tank, a Japanese bunker system, underground clinic and a sunken Japanese freighter. Kennedy and his crew swam here for refuge after a Japanese destroyer wrecked their ship in August 1943. Take a short tour of the island which also offers the chance to snorkel from its beach. Return to the resort and enjoy the afternoon free to snorkel, kayak, paddle board or maybe walk the island trails. (B/D)
Day 9Spend today on Njari Island. This island is almost entirely covered in trees and offers world class diving and snorkelling amidst a huge variety of marine life (in 2004 279 species of fish were counted on a single tank dive). Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

The Solomon Islands is a country where 'green' policies and principles are not exactly buzz words so it's all about the little things adding up to slowly start to make a difference. We are always talking to our local ground agents about the importance of stressing to clients the importance of basic responsible principles such as appropriate waste disposal, not to waste water, turning off lights on leaving the room in hotels, not replacing towels and bedding daily etc.

Our local agents are also keen to stress to visitors the importance of not straying from marked trails at historic sites, an important step towards maintaining the sites for future generations.

Uepi Island Resort encourages all guests to only bring and use biologically sensitive toiletries to the resort. In-room bathroom toiletries are natural plant/mineral based made by a Western Australian company and are 100% biodegradable. The resort also recommends all guests use 'reef safe sunscreens' which are free of Oxybenzone as this is now known to damage the coral reefs causing coral bleaching and affecting the reefs ability to resist climate change. The resort also has strict rules on guests conduct on the reefs and while swimming with the manta rays established to ensure the future of the reefs and their manta ray colony. The resort is also involved with 'Solutions pa Marovo', a charity established by an Australian family who offer annual medical tours to help local Marovo villagers who are unable to otherwise obtain medical treatment.

As a company we have introduced responsible practices in our UK office including paper, cardboard, aluminium and plastic recycling. We also support local UK charities including the RNIB and various charities around the world. 50% of our office staff use public transport (bus and train) and cycle to work. Management encourages this with their introduction of the cycle to work scheme which offers subsidised cycle ownership.

People

By the very nature of life in the Solomons all services are provided by local people. This includes your local English-speaking group guides, the drivers, local guides at various monuments/sites and hotel staff. All staff are paid a fair wage for the Solomons and all wages are kept within the local communities thereby supporting local people. Furthermore, by visiting these hotels and sites additional income is brought into the region, further helping to develop the local area.

Importing food stuffs into the Solomons can be prohibitively expensive so all of the food for meals included on the itinerary is sourced locally whether it is served in hotels or a local restaurant. All hotels on the itinerary are locally owned, managed and run.

Possibly one of the key positive benefits of visiting the Solomons is the albeit sometimes small influence outside attitudes and cultures can make on the people of the country. Locals are always welcoming and friendly and keen to learn a little about Western ways. This holiday helps to allow each culture to learn a little about the other.
