Description of South Africa & Mauritius holiday

This cracking 18 day tailor made holiday takes in the very best of South Africa & Mauritius with plenty of time spent in a variety of destinations ensuring you get a real feel for the places that you’re visiting rather than just zipping from one to the next.

Where else to start other than Cape Town for the South African leg of this tour with five days in the city by the coast before you pick up your rental car and head off for a couple of nights amongst the cellar doors and fine dining restaurants of Franschhoek, just an hour’s drive from Cape Town.

Swapping self-drive for domestic flight you’ll travel to Nelspruit for three nights in a safari lodge where the wildlife-filled plains and river banks of South Africa conjure up a series of exciting game drives and informative guided walks, just 100kms from the border with Mozambique.

The final week of this epic holiday finds you flying to the beaches of Mauritius, via Johannesburg, for a restful end to what could well be one of the finest South Africa & Mauritius holidays ever invented.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

The game reserve used in this safari has been owned and managed by the More family for four generations and carries with it a passion which can only be instilled by a great family history. The family’s passion to deliver a world class luxury safari experience is equalled by their complete commitment in ensuring a pure balance between the preservation of this pristine "bushveld" (wilderness area), allowing access for guests to observe some of Africa's greatest mammals in their natural habitat and ensuring the benefits are shared with local communities. The game reserve is the only reserve in the Sabi Sands which employs a full time ecologist, who is responsible for ensuring the preservation of the land for another four generations to come.

With every booking, we donate funds to Helping Rhinos, our charity partner.
Helping Rhinos have been set up to create awareness of the issues threatening the global rhino population and raises funds to help protect them for future generations.

This donation goes towards training for members of the local community to become rangers and ensure that there are more local people trained in the fight against poaching. This is important from a conservation perspective in order to preserve and protect one of our most important and prehistoric species, but also from an educational perspective as members of the local community are trained and offered jobs and a career - as well as educated about Rhino conservation.

People

Guests have an opportunity to visit a local community. On this tour, the guide will explain his history and customs, as well as some of the basic greeting words. Visitors will meet community members and learn about the realities of their lives, including techniques being used to create awareness of HIV/AIDS. Along route there is also a stop to visit a Pre-School, where guests will get to spend some time socializing with the children and listen to some of their rhymes. This school is a community based initiative and is sponsored by the Game Reserve. For the adventurous there is also the opportunity to eat some of the local cuisine and upon request you can visit the craft market and purchase curios made by the community. We encourage all guests to bring with them paper, pens, crayons etc to donate to the school.

Beachcomber hotels set up FED (Foundation for Hope and Development) where regional committees, staffed by volunteer hotel employees, work with local community groups to channel funds and expertise into social projects. Since it began, just under £1 million has been donated to various projects including the development of local crafts and adult literacy. The aim is to teach underprivileged people to become self sufficient and able to sustain themselves. Other projects have included a youth employment initiative, providing training in academic basics, work ethics including reading and writing skills, sound arithmetical basics and social aptitudes. Industrial placements organised by the FED give the opportunity to the young underprivileged to gain valuable experience in the Mauritian enterprises.
