Description of Tailor made holiday in China
A perfect two week introduction to a fascinating country, this tailor made holiday in China takes in celebrated sights and iconic locations. The tour begins in Beijing, a city packed with history, where you can visit the beautiful Forbidden City, its imperial architecture a bold contrast to the communist built Tiananmen Square just adjacent. Cycle through the hutongs, the old housing area of the city, too, for a sense of stepping back into time to a traditional China.
No trip to China is complete without seeing the Great Wall, but we steer you to the section at Jinshanling, which is beautifully preserved and yet far less frequently visited by tour groups. In Chengdu, visit the Panda Research Centre where this now endangered bear is being nurtured and then relax in this pleasant city, trying some tasty regional cuisine in one of the many local restaurants.
In Guilin, you’ll see one of China’s most beautiful and magical landscapes, which has inspired poets and painters for centuries. Take a river raft ride, admiring the limestone peaks that rear up from the banks. This China adventure winds up in Shanghai, a thriving modern city, where you can take a cruise on the Huangpu River or enjoy some shopping before flying home.
To transport you between the highlights efficiently and make the most of your time, a high speed train ride and internal flights are included. Spring or autumn is the best time to go in terms of weather, although you can visit China at any time of year.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Loads of highlights in our 6 week holiday: seeing pandas & the Terracotta Warriors, walking the Great Wall, sound and light show in Yangshuo, the Potala Palace in Tibet. We also found the building work around us fascinating- such a massive scale, 20 skyscrapers at a time going up plus huge road and rail building programmes. The sheer scale of everything was astounding.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Research where you want to go.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Certainly supported the local population.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent, our tour operator and their local partner did a first class job.

In a country where environmental problems are well documented, the purpose of this itinerary is to provide a glimpse of China’s countryside and rural way of life, as well as taking in its unmissable cultural and historical highlights. The visit to the Great Wall at Jinshanling aims to avoid the large crowds at other sections closer to Beijing. Jinshanling is far more peaceful and less developed for tourists, which makes for a more rewarding experience. The views from here as well are outstanding.People
In Beijing, the Hutongs tour is a chance to put money back into the local community by visiting local families for lunch. They are paid to receive visitors in this way and genuinely enjoy the experience. You’ll also try cookery in a local home.Taking the overnight train to Xian also is an excellent way to involve yourself with ordinary local Chinese, who you would otherwise miss by flying as air travel is too expensive for most people. In Yangshuo, the local economy is heavily dependent on tourism these days and visits into the countryside do support the local people who provide the produce for restaurants, and operate bamboo rafts and other tourism-related ventures. You can also try your hand at a local cookery course, which will include buying the ingredients from a local market.
Also in Yangshuo, you’ll be staying in a locally-run hotels which will provide a different experience to the larger ones you will have stayed at in the cities.
