2 Reviews of Tobago wellness holiday
4.5 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
Feeding the hummingbirds, the yoga and massages, the rainforest walk and just chilling in the beautiful accommodation overlooking the beach. The wildlife and friendly people. The management and staff at the hotel made every effort to ensure we had an excellent stay. Everything was memorable - it was a wonderful holiday.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Tobago is an expensive destination so make sure you have sufficient budget. Bring lots of insect repellent as it's a rural destination with a vast variety of
'wildlife'.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes definitely, especially at hotel where the Retreat ensures as far as possible that local people benefit from the environment they have created. Customers who come to stay are encouraged to interact with the local community and to support local businesses as Castara is a rural fishing village and a small community. The hotel also makes every effort to reduce environmental impact and support conservation - it's not a large tourist resort.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Excellent. We had a very relaxing time and would recommend the hotel if you are looking for a non tourist destination where you can enjoy the wellness element, snorkel, swim, revel in the beauty and nature and also just chill. The only reason we have not given five stars is because we had not considered that everything would be so much more expensive than we had anticipated and therefore difficult for anyone on a very restricted budget.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
If you are a horse person, definitely book a session or two with Being and Healing with Horses in Buccoo Bay. Wonderful people and facility who work with rescued animals and humans with special needs. At the retreat, take advantage of the yoga classes with Judha and Leah. Both beautiful people with healing vibes.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Bring your own mask, snorkel, and fins if you have them. There is a small reef in Little Bay just a few minutes walk from the retreat.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
10/10

Thank you so much for your review Mary. The team really enjoyed your visit and Leah and Judha, Porridge and Jeanell send their best!
For those reading Mary's comments regarding snorkelling - yes, the reef in the bay is lovely for snorkelling. Since Mary's stay, Judha and Leah have launched their own eco-snorkelling tour business and have all the equipment, so when booking your Wellness retreat, put in a request for a snorkelling trip and this can be arranged.

Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Our open-sided Wellness Studio and all 17 eco lodges are built using locally-supplied wood and built and fitted by local craftspeople from the local village. With green roofs and wooden frames, they are architecturally designed to merge harmoniously with the backdrop of rainforest, ocean and village. We have spent 15 years creating a sanctuary for wildlife within our tropical gardens. The endangered agouti is now a common sight, along with iguana, and a nesting armadillo that was first spotted in 2016. Over 70 species of birds can be viewed from our accommodations. While stretching in the yoga studio you will be visited by an array of wildlife, making the experience that much more calming and special.
Where possible we strive to grow our own produce in our kitchen garden. We have undertaken extensive tree and shrub planting to maximise soil retention and avoid the risk of soil erosion and landslides. Paths with drainage systems have been constructed to ensure the safe run off of water from our land to the road below.
People
We are proud to work successfully as an intimate, family run eco-resort which is managed by empowered locals who have a stake in the business. A number of our staff have established satellite services under our name, such as airport transfers, laundry, bread making and boat trips. We take no commission for these services. We have grown our Wellness Team, investing in our existing, local staff. Our latest yoga teacher qualified on one of the yoga retreats hosted by us and delivered by a world-class yoga teacher. We are also training our Wellness Team to qualify as snorkelling guides through the expert local Environmental Research Institute Charlottesville to increase our offering to guests but importantly to be part of the safe exploration and preservation of our coral reefs.
We encourage our guests to use the services in the village including local places to eat. Our restaurant deliberately offers a different level of service and style of cooking (more Caribbean fusion than local) and our prices are higher which avoids a feeling of competition with the village.
