Travelling in Montenegro with kids

Our kids will never forget our host showing off his hunting gun proudly and then taking out a couple of ducks from the freezer that he had shot. Feathers and all. That's life in the mountains, for you![]()

‘Are we nearly there yet?’ is not something you will be tortured with too many times in Montenegro, as it is so small, you are never too far from some marvel or other. Unless you get stuck in summer traffic jams around the likes of burgeoning Budva - but you have been warned. The best thing to do when travelling in Montenegro with kids is not drive at all if you can avoid it. The roads still leave a lot to be desired, so by holidaying with a family activity company, you will be driven from peaks to plateaus, coast to canyon. Base yourself in somewhere like Lake Skadar for a family activity week of mountains and lakes that will make you feel like veritable Von Trapps, or in the Bay of Kotor for coastal frolics instead.

Activities for families in Montenegro
Summit a mountain
Most children will roll their eyes at the notion of climbing a mountain. But Montenegro is different. You can access the peaks quite easily, the views are stupendous and the mountain villages make the best lunch stops, with local produce a plenty. Take a guided walk for all the best waterfall spots too.Go wild in the water
Always have a cossie in your daypack. There are so many waterfalls, mountain lakes and rivers where you can dip your toes or just jump in. And if you go kayaking on Lake Skadar, you have 400km² worth of water to jump into. Always take precautions as this isn’t a land of lifeguards and pool rules. It is one of feral fun in the sun.
Run the river
The Tara River Canyon in Durmitor NP is white water rafting central which, given that it is the second deepest river canyon in the world, after USA’s Grand Canyon, is hardly surprising. This is one of the most exhilarating things to do when travelling with kids in Montenegro and not as scary as you might think. If you can do Chessington, you can do canyons. Our top trip

Tips for families
Sanja Janovic from our supplier Adventure Montenegro:
“Montenegro is very popular with families. Especially the adventure park on Mount Lovcen, the white water rafting, a lot of different activities on our lovely clear water. We are also very serious when it comes to safety and activities, especially when it comes to children. Wear cotton clothes in summer when it is so hot, or only natural fibres. Because when you take acrylic clothes, it will be much hotter. In terms of safety and tides, we are in Kotor Bay, so it is very deep, but safe with no big tides, waves or currents. On the Tara River, however, there are strong currents, and so you must always go with a guide. We can’t take children under eight years old on river rafting trips”.

Emma Heywood founded Undiscovered Montenegro with her husband Ben, and with three young children, they give top tips on travelling in Montenegro with kids: “My top tip is just go! Montenegro is a fantastic country for families, especially active ones who don’t just want to sit on the beach. There’s lots to keep the kids interested – wild swimming, kayaking, hiking, honey tasting trips and not to forget wild tortoises! Montenegrins are mad about kids, so even if you have very little ones, it’s a great place to visit as you’ll get lots of attention and offers of help.”
