Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Our tour of off the beaten track Maldives has a focus on the environmental work being done in the country away from the gaze of mass tourism. We aim to show travellers the hard work been done by local organisations to help preserve the delicate ecosystem. The use of accommodation throughout this tour is carefully selected, for example when we stay at the Barefoot Eco Hotel. The tap water is supplied from a reverse osmosis desalination facility that meets the daily water demand. This water is completely safe to use for dental hygiene. They proudly reduce plastic waste by bottling the drinking water in reusable glass bottles. This saves up to 300 throwaway plastic bottles per day. In order to be classified as an Eco Hotel, Barefoot limits its impact on the food importation system and aims to be as self-sufficient as possible. They have farm-to-table fruits and vegetables that are being grown in the resort.
Before visiting some of the local reefs, our clients are given a presentation on the Maldives Coral Reefs and Marine Life. This includes an important safety briefing on responsible snorkelling.
Our UK based office has an extremely low carbon footprint and we subscribe to a green energy only tariff. We are actively reducing the waste produced by our office and staff, no longer producing brochures or mailing leaflets and confirmations. Our offices have cycle locks and showers to encourage cycling to work and we offer staff a cycle to work scheme.
People
Your visit makes a real difference, bringing work to local drivers, guides and other staff. You can rest assured that the money spent in the community stays in the community. We visit local projects, including taking a walk with a member of IDEAs NGO. Island Development and Environmental Awareness Society (IDEAS) is a non-governmental youth organization based in the northern tip of the Maldives. Founded in 2002, IDEAS mission is to promote socio-economic development of youth, women, differently abled and the community, as well as to promote sustainable development in the Maldives islands.
On all of our tours, we only employ local staff and unlike many operators we believe that to send a foreign tour leader along to accompany your trip is an unnecessary burden on your wallet and on our own carbon footprint. We believe that the locals know best.
Our local partners only use locally owned accommodation which means your money stays in the area to benefit the local community. An example of this is when we meet a local cook at the café for a cookery demonstration. Here you will be shown how to make mashuni and roshi, a very typical Maldivian dish which you will then enjoy for your lunch.
We only work with operators who are as committed as we are to putting something back into the communities we visit.
