This superb Venice to Split small group tour gives you a thorough introduction to the cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes of the Adriatic region. Relish carefully selected experiences along a nine-day route that takes in a wealth of must-see destinations.
Beginning in Venice with a welcome dinner at a renowned seafood restaurant (it’s definitely worth arriving a day or so earlier to explore the City of Bridges), you’ll meet the rest of your group – a maximum of 15 people – and your tour leader, before continuing over the border into Slovenia.
Slovenia is perhaps most known for its gorgeous capital city, Ljubljana, and two breathtaking lakes in Bohinj and Bled. You’ll enjoy guided sightseeing around each of them, with ample time to capture some really special photographs. Beforehand, though, it’s an open-topped train ride underground, into the immense Postojna, the largest karst cave in Europe and a geological wonder.
On day four you cross into Croatia, and spend a memorable morning in the town of Motovun, whose forests are a paradise for truffle-hunters. Learn the secrets of finding and cooking with these delicacies, as you pair truffles with wines, and try a Croatian speciality, fritaja (omelette). In the afternoon you’ll reach the pretty town of Rovinj on the Adriatic coast, staying in a hotel on its own peaceful island. The following day the pace of the tour eases up as you spend the morning relaxing, perhaps with a swim in the ocean, before continuing on to Plitvice Lakes National Park after lunch.
Plitvice Lakes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, presents a beguiling landscape of clear turquoise waters, fed by tumbling waterfalls and accessed by wooden walkways. Your tour leader will be happy to recommend a few easygoing walking routes to admire the scenery, before you finish the day with a guided sightseeing tour around the walled city of Zadar, former capital of Dalmatia, where you’ll be spending the night.
In Zadar, another free day for you to spend as you please. Small group holidays are ideal for solo travellers and you may decide to pair up with one or two others to visit the fish market, tour nearby Krka National Park, or take a boat trip around some of the islands in Kornati National Park just off the coast.
Finally, you reach Split, with its picturesque setting on the Adriatic a fitting place to bid your group farewell. But not before a stay in a boutique hotel that was, in the 1700s, the first café in Split. Your accommodations throughout the tour, like the restaurants your group dines in, will be locally owned and operated wherever possible. Each destination varied and amazing. Our group and leader were a delight.

Good shoes, though the distances were not great, you should be able to walk a few kms easily to keep up.

Service industry for sure. I think as much as it could be.

We show we understand why water is too precious to waste and, when it rains, we savour every drop. We provide training to trip leaders on water consumption best practices and how to encourage their travellers to follow these principles too. As tap water is generally safe to drink along the Adriatic Coast and in Slovenia, we encourage travellers to bring a reusable water bottle that they can refill throughout the trip. This reduces the number of single-use plastic water bottles disposed of by our travellers. We continue to work with local suppliers on water management initiatives. For example, encouraging hotel owners to provide water refill stations, and in-room signage requesting short showers, repeated towel use and turning taps off.Where possible we choose to travel by land rather than air. By minimizing the use of flights on our trips, we are making journeys more stimulating and more sustainable for travellers. This trip around the Adriatic Coast does not include any flights, providing all transport by road or boat. We ensure our vehicles are fuel-efficient and well maintained with regular servicing. We use vehicles that are an appropriate size to suit the group size. For example, we wouldn’t use a 16-seater van if we only had five people travelling with us. We optimize our driving routes to reduce travel time and our carbon footprint, and we turn the engine off when travellers are visiting a site and not in the vehicle.

Our trips maximize the opportunity for travellers to engage meaningfully with local culture and communities. Many experiences on our trips also support traditional cultural practices – whether artisanal, culinary or otherwise. In turn, this helps to sustain and preserve these traditional practices so that future generations may continue to learn, enjoy and benefit from them.
