Accessibility
Accessible tourism overview:
We are a team of can do people and we do our best to customise our tours and experiences to ensure that anyone can make the most of our tour options. We have welcomed a range of guests with different disabilities, and ages and our guides are only too happy to help accommodate their needs. Our youngest guest has been 6 months old and our eldest guest has been in their 90s so the team are used to working with different age groups and adapting the tour and activities to be encompassing regardless of age, ability or experience. All we ask is that we are made aware of any specific requirements at the time of booking so that we can plan in advance.
Limited mobility:
We can offer ground floor accommodation options or properties with lifts and our activities can be adapted by our experienced and professional guiding team.
Cognitive conditions:
The people of the Maldives are naturally laid back and relaxed and you will find stays on local islands calm and peaceful. We select small family run properties and if you have specific requirements in regard to the activities included in our tours we arehappy to tailor-make. We have a relationship with a local autism centre which allows us to access accompanying support if necessary.
'Free from' food:
As you may expect from an island beach nation the Maldives imports over 90% of its food, discounting the abundance of tuna, chilli and fresh coconut that form part of our staple diet. We appreciate that our guests may have special dietary requirements and are used to dealing with allergies, intolerance and special requirements. Providing we know in advance either before or at the time of booking we will do our best to meet your dietary requirements or at the very least advise you on what alternatives will be on offer.
LGBT:
This trip ensures safe and welcoming travel for LGBTQ travellers. It allows everyone to enjoy a
and discover our island paradise.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
The white white sand and the blue blue sea... and the varied marine life.
2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Enjoy it!!! It’s a quiet place, ideal for getting away from everything. Bring mosquito repellent. There are lots of bitey creatures in the mornings and evenings.
3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. In many ways. I used one plastic bottle for the whole of my trip, once I got to Maldives, which was given to me by the airport on my way there, because the hotel uses glass water bottles.
4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
Superb. The most relaxing holiday ever!

Dear Anita,
Delighted you enjoyed your holiday with us at The Barefoot Eco Hotel, can't think of a better way to have started 2020! I hope that you have returned home and have not yet lost your sense of relaxation! Its a pity that mosquitoes will prevalent, no doubt due to the volume of rain we had been experiencing in December. A top tip from a previous guest which has
been added to our welcome information pack is to take a Vitamin B supplement two weeks before holiday and during, it worked a treat apparently. The team at Barefoot work hard to reduce environmental impact so it's great to hear you felt this was the case, not just with the water bottles but with all the other actions they take. Hopefully in the future the airport will be providing water in other containers as the Maldives has pledged to be plastic free by 2024.
Thank you for taking time to leave your review it is appreciated and I will also share your comments with the Barefoot team. We look forward to welcoming you again in the future.
Kind Regards
Ruth

Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your holiday to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
WasteThe Maldives is a fragile environment. It is more fragile and more in danger than most other places on earth. The country’s existence relies on healthy coral reefs and a moderation of the sea level rise. The Maldives struggles to eliminate all the rubbish produced by over 1 million tourists per year and whilst educating locals in waste management is all part of a large project, as visitors to their home we encourage our guests to support in the following ways and help by leading by example. For this reason and for the obvious difficulty in eliminating several materials, we suggest to bring back the empty containers of shampoo, bath foam, conditioner, cream and photograph film. We also advise to bring cotton shopping bags to eliminate the need for plastic bags when shopping and to pack a reusable water bottle to avoid the purchase of small plastic water bottles.
Suppliers
We choose suppliers that match our environmental values. The hotel we partner follows the Eco tourism principles of Sustainability and Conservation, involving Local Community within its activities. Through this sustainability The resort intends to have minimal impact on the local carbon footprint as well as giving back to the local island community.
People
Travelling with respectWe work to create good relationships between tourists and the local community. We respect local customs and culture. We want our guests to learn about local customs and cultural practices whilst respecting local dress and cultural requirements. Cultural escorted bike tours on Hanimadhoo allow our guests access into the local community to learn more about the Maldivian culture first hand.
A fair deal
We offer local people good working conditions, a fair wage, benefits and empower them with training and development opportunities. With the exception of our Co-Founder, who has resided in the Maldives full time for over 10 years, all our team are Maldivians who have a passion to share their enthusiasm and knowledge of their country. Every member of the team is involved with our local island package development, planning and organisation and their input has allowed us to develop a very unique product.
Campaigning for change
We recognise local issues and actively campaign to address them. We have shown support in conjunction with our partner PADI Dive Centres by involving ourselves in public awareness dives for various campaigns including, Dive for Diabetes, a condition prolific in the Maldives, Dive for Gaza with all funds raised being passed to the Maldives Gaza charity and Environmental Awareness dives to clear rubbish from local island harbour areas.
